“Museums have lots and lots of stuff,” I usually answer, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. Now Manhattan’s Rubin Museum of Art, which features art from the Himalayas, has announced that it will close later this year. But looted artifacts alone — removed from their original context, quarantined in an antiseptic display case — cannot do this. Unlike, say, Impressionist paintings or Pop Art sculptures, ritual objects were not meant to be seen in a gallery at a time of the viewer’s choosing. Used alongside music, scents and tastes, these holy relics are tools to help participants in rituals achieve a transcendent experience.

The Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan will shutter after two decades of championing its prized collection of art from Himalayan Asia, with leaders saying on Wednesday that they wanted to envision a modern museum without walls. But the museum, which will sell its building, was also facing financial challenges and had become a focal point in recent discussions about the history of religious objects being looted from Asian countries. Doors to the Rubin Museum will close Oct. 6, when its last exhibition ends, before the institution transitions to a skeleton crew that will process long-term loans and research inquiries and help with fund-raising. “The definition of what a museum is has evolved dramatically in recent years,” Noah Dorsky, the museum’s board president, said in a statement. “Historically, the Rubin’s culture embraces continual change and evolution, and in our new incarnation, we are redefining what a museum can be.”

CNN —The Messenger, the upstart digital publication that hired hundreds of journalists and vowed to upend the news industry as a centrist outlet, will shut down less than a year after its high-profile launch, a person familiar with the matter said. The collapse of the outlet, founded by media entrepreneur Jimmy Finkelstein, came as it tried to survive severe financial woes and broader industry headwinds. Staffers at the outlet learned of its shuttering from The New York Times, which broke the news on its demise Wednesday afternoon, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. “The economic headwinds have left many media companies fighting for survival,” he said. “Unfortunately, as a new company, we encountered even more significant challenges than others and could not survive those headwinds.”

CNN —Ford will shut down one of two production shifts in April at the Dearborn, Michigan, factory that builds the F-150 Lightning electric pickup. The move is part of “matching F-150 Lightning production to customer demand,” the company said Friday. While sales of electric vehicles increased in 2023, the growth was slower than many industry experts had expected. Ford still projects an increase in Lightning sales this year after a 55% jump to 24,000 trucks last year. The 24,000 in Lightning sales is still a small fraction of overall Ford F-series pickup sales.

Vernon, New Jersey CNN —General Motors is very clear that its engineers didn’t create the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, the first hybrid Corvette, to save gas. Instead they wanted to make an all-wheel-drive Corvette, and the best way to do that was simply to attach a powerful electric motor to the front wheels. Unlike in a Toyota Prius, or almost any other hybrid, the E-Ray’s electric motor almost never drives the car on its own. For that, GM offers the lighter and more powerful Corvette Z06, with its high-revving 670-horsepower V8 and no electric motor. Instead, GM has focused on fully electric technology and, before too long, there will be a fully electric Corvette.

New York CNN —CVS will close dozens of pharmacies located inside of Target stores in early 2024, a company spokesperson said on Thursday. The closures come as retail pharmacy chains in the US face increasing difficulties with their prescriptions business, workforces and more. Prior to the closing of any impacted location, prescriptions will be transferred to a nearby CVS Pharmacy, said Thibault. CVS purchased Target’s pharmacy business from the big box retailer in 2015 for $1.9 billion. CVS has about 9,000 pharmacy locations overall.

"The government has today decided to close more border stations," Orpo told a press conference. Finland said Russia was letting migrants through those two crossing points by foot despite an agreement that they could only be crossed by car. "There are growing signs that the situation is worsening on the eastern border," Orpo said. Finland will shut three of the four remaining border crossing points from midnight on Friday, leaving only the Raja-Jooseppi crossing in the Arctic open. "Raja-Jooseppi is the northernmost (border crossing) and it requires a real effort to get there," Orpo said.

New York CNN —The United States is one step closer to losing its last perfect credit rating after Moody’s Investors Service changed the outlook of the nation’s debt to negative on Friday after markets closed. These effects would likely be even more painful if Moody’s does eventually downgrade the US debt. The nation’s diminished fiscal strength, undone by extreme partisanship in Washington, was a key driver of the action, according to a statement from Moody’s. Standard and Poor’s downgraded the United States for the first time in 2011, following the debt ceiling standoff then. In August, Fitch Ratings knocked America’s credit rating down after the most recent debt ceiling debate.

House Republicans overwhelmingly voted 112-86 to dump Jim Jordan as their speaker nominee. It was the worst showing for the majority party's speaker nominee in nearly 164 years. In a closed-door meeting immediately after the third failed vote on the Ohio Republican's embattled speakership bid, House Republicans voted overwhelmingly — by a 112-86 margin — to remove him as the party's nominee. It came after 25 Republicans voted against Jordan earlier on Friday and he garnered just over 45% of the vote among all members of Congress. That was the worst showing for the majority party's nominee for speaker since 1859, when the House took weeks to select a speaker on the eve of the Civil War.
