Bumble had a "modest budget" at the time, Wolfe Herd said in a MasterClass course released on Thursday. Instead of traditional marketing campaigns, Wolfe Herd put together a series of "crazy hacks" to drum up interest in her Austin, Texas-based startup, she said. Wolfe Herd used a similar tactic with college fraternities, dropping off pizza with branded bumblebee stickers slapped onto the cardboard boxes. For Wolfe Herd, the momentum was validating. Seven years after launching the app, Wolfe Herd became the youngest female founder in history to take a company public.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky and his two co-founders did it with $40 boxes of cereal. Specifically, they sold self-designed cereal boxes featuring then-presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain as a breakfast option in Airbnbs. The cereal proved popular, selling more than 1,000 boxes and making $30,000 for the company, Chesky said. It might have never happened without the cereal: Airbnb was rejected by multiple major investors during its first year of operations, Chesky noted in a 2015 Medium post. "The investors that rejected us were smart people, and I am sure we didn't look very impressive at the time," he wrote.

Blackstone and Bumble are still a fitting match

NEW YORK, Feb 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Blackstone (BX.N) is finding its pairing with Bumble (BMBL.O) to be lucrative even during a down spell. The private equity firm bought a majority stake in Bumble in 2019 that valued the company at around $3 billion. The share of stock that Blackstone sold in the public offering inked it almost $2 billion. Throw in approximately $300 million in dividends, and Blackstone has already made back its investment and then some. The match is winning enough that Blackstone is raising more money to find others to share the love.
The 120-plus mix of CEOs, founders, and VC investors are — by definition — exceptional in the male-dominated business world. I wanted to both share their stories and also to find takeaways in their successful strategies. I also had a particular advantage as I scheduled back-to-back zoom interviews: pretty much everyone was at home. I was impressed to find these women deploying characteristics that would seem like they could detract from strong leadership — like introversion, empathy or gratitude — to their advantage. Take Jennifer Holmgren, the CEO of Disruptor 50 company LanzaTech, which uses a microbe to turn pollution into a fuel.
