SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers walk the picket line outside Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., July 25, 2023. Representatives for the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents the studios, had no comment. Producer and WGA member Al Septien, also picketing outside Netflix on Friday, said he wanted to get back to work, but only under the right terms. After a months-long public campaign that began shortly after Mayor Brandon Johnson (right) took office in May, advocates reached a deal with restaurant industry lobbyists to phase out the tipped-minimum wage over five years. "The closest pending victory is in Chicago," said Saru Jayaraman, founder and president of the advocacy group One Fair Wage. Three-fourths said they would reduce the number of tipped workers on their payroll, and nearly half said the cuts would be significant. The $9.48 an hour wage most workers got cost the restaurant $5,449.61, he said, a fraction of the $17,198 in tips workers earned. That's one reason why the restaurant industry engaged in a kind of bidding war against itself, to find a compromise solution that politicians like Alderman Carlos Ramirez Rosa, Johnson's floor manager in the City Council, would buy.

Six months before Kim Kearns quit drinking, she cracked open a book called, “We Are the Luckiest: The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life,” by Laura McKowen. Ms. Kearns, co-host of “The Weekend Sober” podcast, credits the book with helping her quit. When people start to evaluate their relationship with alcohol, they often “collect different prompts and data points,” said Aaron Weiner, a clinical psychologist practicing in Chicago. “Books are one of these data points” that help people realize they might have a problem, he said. We asked more than a dozen addiction experts, sobriety counselors, podcasters and people in recovery to share the books they found most helpful.

So are we surprised when Sebastian, of all people, turns up as a rider on Abby’s trip? She is (more or less) perfect all along (or at least as close to perfect as any of us are). No real spoilers here, I hope, but one of the riders turns out to be a pregnant teenager and, because of post-Roe obstructions, it takes a village to help her realize her choices. That’s probably because where I live, all the riders whiz past scoldingly, as if every day is the Tour de France. Also, I don’t like the word “derailleur” (whatever it means) and I don’t need to hear about the chamois lining of anybody’s shorts.

July 24 (Reuters) - Domino's Pizza (DPZ.N) missed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter revenue on Monday, as elevated delivery fees and higher prices to boost margins hurt demand for its pizzas and chicken wings. Shares of the world's largest pizza chain dropped 4% in premarket trading as Domino's said it saw lower order volumes during the quarter. Higher labor and raw material costs have forced restaurant chains, even the biggest names including McDonald's (MCD.N), to jack up menu prices and delivery fees, which hurt cost-conscious consumers whose budgets are already squeezed by sticky inflation. Domino's U.S. same-store sales rose 0.1% in the second quarter, compared with analysts' estimates of an about 0.2% increase. Domino's total revenue fell 3.8% to $1.02 billion in the three months ended June 18, compared with analysts' estimate of $1.07 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Tony Bennett, a singer whose melodic clarity, jazz-influenced phrasing, audience-embracing persona and warm, deceptively simple interpretations of musical standards helped spread the American songbook around the world and won him generations of fans, died on Friday in New York City. His publicist, Sylvia Weiner, announced his death. In February 2021, his wife, Susan Bennett, told AARP The Magazine that Mr. Bennett learned he had Alzheimer’s disease in 2016. He continued to perform and record despite his illness; his last public performance was in August of that year, when he appeared with Lady Gaga at Radio City Music Hall in a show titled “One Last Time.”Mr. Bennett’s career of more than 70 years was remarkable not only for its longevity, but also for its consistency. In hundreds of concerts and club dates and more than 150 recordings, he devoted himself to preserving the classic American popular song, as written by Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hammerstein and others.

Domino's Pizza inks a deal with Uber Eats

New York CNN —Domino’s Pizza has long been a holdout of using third-party delivery apps in the United States. Customers can soon order Domino’s full menu on Uber Eats and Postmates, with a partnership announced Monday that is scheduled to roll out nationwide by the end of the year. And in 2021 Domino’s even gave away $50 million in free food to counter the “surprise fees” from delivery apps. “Other food delivery apps charge customers with hidden city or service fees,” the company said at the time. However, Domino’s employees will still deliver the pizza rather than Uber Eats drivers, Weiner said.
