Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren blasted the Kroger-Albertsons merger. Sanders called it "an absolute disaster" for consumers that would result in higher grocery costs. The grocery store chains announced Friday that they've entered into a merger agreement that values the combined company at about $24.6 billion. "That's good for small businesses, it's good for consumers, and it actually, in many cases, reduces the need for regulatory oversight. And without local competition offering lower prices, consumers are stuck with nowhere else to stop.

Republican Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz is getting mocked on Twitter after his insult backfired. Oz took a jab at Fetterman, saying his wearing of hoodies made him look like "the man." Some Twitter users said Oz's insult was more of an unintended compliment. Another user wrote that Oz "continues to be John Fetterman's best campaigner." Fetterman responded to Oz, saying he knew "politics can be nasty" but could "never imagine ridiculing someone for their health challenges."
And much of that waste could be repurposed or recycled, if only it were better identified and sorted. That's where a startup called Smarter Sorting comes in. Using the Smarter Sorting data to determine exactly what is in the product, and especially if any ingredients are toxic, retailers and manufacturers can make more informed decisions on how best to handle its inevitable disposal. "Albertsons, one of our customers today, just released a sustainability goal report with four main pillars in it, and one of the main pillars for them is the reduction of food waste," said Claudia. Smarter Sorting's backers include Regeneration VC and G2 Venture Partners, with total funding to date of just over $55 million.
Wegmans joined a wave of grocery stores using self-checkout technology during the Covid-19 pandemic to compensate for worker shortages. Wegmans, the East Coast supermarket chain, said Monday that it would stop using its self-checkout app until the system could be improved because its stores were experiencing losses. The chain, which stretches from New York to North Carolina, said it rolled out its app, called Scan, early in the Covid-19 pandemic. Customers at certain locations could scan items on the app as they shopped and then pay at a self-checkout register.
New York (CNN Business) In 2019, Wegmans, the cult-favorite northeastern grocery chain, rolled out a new mobile app that allowed customers to scan, bag and pay for groceries while they shopped and then skip the checkout line altogether. The app, Wegmans SCAN, promised customers a quicker checkout and also let them see a running total of their purchases as they shopped. This week, the grocer announced that it is ending the app because of rampant shoplifting. "We've made the decision to turn off the app until we can make improvements that will meet the needs of our customers and business." Wegmans did not provide any details on the losses experienced with the app.

In a testy exchange on Twitter, Fetterman and Oz traded barbs about each other's personal wealth. 2 homes," Oz tweeted. This week, Fetterman needled Oz when the latter messed up the name of the grocery store Wegmans, calling it "Wegner's" instead.
