Toronto-Dominion Bank said it works diligently to prevent criminals from using the bank for illegal activity. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesToronto-Dominion Bank ’s handling of suspicious customer transactions was behind regulators’ refusal to bless the Canadian lender’s $13.4 billion bid to buy First Horizon , people familiar with the matter said. The banks called off the proposed union Thursday, citing uncertainty over whether and when they could receive regulatory approvals, without being more specific. The reluctance by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve to give TD a clean bill of health on its anti-money-laundering practices proved to be the biggest obstacle, the people said.
The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank sent shock waves through Wall Street and Main Street. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin explains what this means for investors and everyday Americans. Illustration: Preston JesseeToronto-Dominion Bank and Tennessee-based First Horizon have called off their $13.4 billion merger. TD ran into hurdles getting regulators to sign off on the deal, announced in February 2022. The Canadian lender said it couldn’t be sure when or if it would get the necessary approvals, so the two banks decided to terminate the deal.

TORONTO—British Columbia is moving to restrict the sale of the diabetes drug Ozempic to Canadian residents after people from the U.S. sought out supplies to lose weight, threatening to send the medicine into shortage. British Columbia’s health ministry said Tuesday it will bar doctors and pharmacists from dispensing the drug to people who don’t live in Canada in coming weeks, once the provincial government amends existing healthcare rules.
TORONTO—Multinational companies are pumping billions of dollars into Canada’s electric-vehicle manufacturing sector, lured by government incentives, access to raw materials and cheap renewable energy. In the latest sign of interest in the country, German auto maker Volkswagen Group announced last week that it had chosen a site in the province of Ontario to build its first battery-cell plant outside Europe. A company spokesman declined to provide specifics about the investment, but Canada’s industry minister said the investment, in the town of St. Thomas, 120 miles northeast of Detroit, could rank as the largest ever made in Canada’s auto sector.

Google says the test affects less than 4% of randomly chosen users in Canada and will run for roughly five weeks. Alphabet Inc.’s Google unit is blocking news content on its search function in Canada for some of its users, as it tests ways to respond to proposed legislation that would force online platforms to pay media organizations for links to their stories. Google’s move comes as the legislation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ’s government is before the Canadian senate for debate. The bill, known as C-18, was approved by the lower house of parliament late last year. The legislation focused on online news links is part of Canada’s broader effort, championed by Mr. Trudeau, to regulate online content.

TORONTO—Ontario is the latest Canadian province that is turning to private healthcare options in a bid to fix growing problems with the publicly funded healthcare system. Canada’s most-populous province this past week outlined a plan to allow more patients to go to private treatment centers for cataract and joint-replacement surgeries as well as for services such as MRIs or CT scans. The province will invest more than 18 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to $13.4 million, in the private facilities to increase their capacity.
