BERLIN, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 15: German Finance Minister Christian Lindner gives a statement to the media at the Chancellery following the weekly government cabinet meeting on November 15, 2023 in Berlin, Germany. "I know what some of you are thinking, Germany probably is a sick man. Germany is not the sick man," Christian Lindner told World Economic Forum delegates at a Bloomberg panel on Friday. References to Germany as the "sick man of Europe" resurfaced last year. The "sick man" title had first been used to describe Germany's economy in 1998 as the country navigated the costly challenges of a post-reunification economy.

Vas Narasimhan, chief executive officer of Novartis AG, listens during a panel session on the opening day of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019. Vas Narasimhan, CEO of pharmaceutical firm Novartis, told CNBC Tuesday that he didn't believe there had been much improvement in preparedness for pandemics in the wake of the Covid crisis. "I'm sad to say, I don't think we've improved unfortunately," said Narasimhan, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He explained that there did not appear to be the continued level of investment as hoped for, during this "inter-pandemic" period. "Now that we're past the pandemic — and really because of the feats of our industry, companies coming up with incredible mRNA vaccines and diagnostic tools — we're back to almost no investment from governments," Narasimhan said.

Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, at a press conference at the IMF Headquarters on April 14, 2023. The head of the International Monetary Fund warned Monday that China needs structural reforms in order to avoid "a fairly significant decline in growth rates." Speaking to CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Kristalina Georgieva said China was facing both short-term and long-term challenges. In the short-term, she said China's property sector still needed "fixing," along with a high level of local government debt. "Ultimately, what China needs are structural reforms to continue to open up the economy, to balance the growth model more towards domestic consumption, meaning create more confidence in people, so [they] don't save, they spend more," Georgieva said.

Brian Armstrong has become the new face of crypto. Coinbase Global, the cryptocurrency exchange he co-founded in 2012, is one of the last big digital-asset companies standing after a string of high-profile collapses and government crackdowns. Armstrong’s former rivals—FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao , who once boasted far greater influence and wealth—are either in jail or facing time behind bars.

The nearly monthlong trial, in courtroom 26A in downtown Manhattan, of one-time crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried was courtroom drama. The line to get into the courthouse could start as early as 11:30 p.m. the night before, and, on some days, courtroom slots were claimed by 4:30 a.m. Anyone who didn’t make it into the courtroom could watch the action on TV screens in overflow rooms. There, it could get rowdy, with laughing or heckling in response to witness testimony.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

In a courtroom sketch, Judge Lewis Kaplan watches as FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried testifies earlier in his fraud trial. Photo: jane rosenberg/ReutersSam Bankman-Fried faced his biggest test in the legal hot seat Monday, grilled by a federal prosecutor who was intent on poking holes through the FTX founder’s claims that unfortunate management mistakes, not criminal activity, were to blame for the crypto exchange’s collapse. The fallen crypto star, testifying in his own defense in New York against fraud and other charges, began by confidently answering questions from his own lawyer, saying he had been honest with customers and investors and believed his business empire was in good financial shape. The trial proceedings shifted quickly after Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon began her cross-examination and sought to confront Bankman-Fried with a litany of his past public statements whose truthfulness she questioned.

Passenger Susan Karpik was the lead plaintiff in the case against British-American cruise operator Carnival and its subsidiary Princess Cruises, the ship's owner. Federal Court Justice Angus Stewart ruled that Carnival had been negligent as defined by Australian consumer law by allowing the cruise to depart in the early months of the pandemic. He said Carnival had a duty to take reasonable care of her health and safety in regard to COVID-19. “It’s been a long time coming and a very comprehensive victory for the passengers on the Ruby Princess,” Antzoulatos said. “The pandemic was a difficult time in Australia’s history, and we understand how heartbreaking it was for those affected,” Carnival said.

REUTERS/Eloisa Lopez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Carnival Corp's (CCL.N) Australian unit has been ordered to pay the medical expenses of a woman who contracted COVID-19, with a judge ruling that the cruise ship operator misled passengers about safety risks in a landmark class action ruling. The decision from Australia's Federal Court is the first class action win against a cruise ship operator in the world, according to Shine Lawyers, who represent about 1,000 Australian plaintiffs in the suit. Legal filings show the operator denied it knew before the voyage that the risk of contracting COVID was higher on a cruise ship than in the community. The number of plaintiffs could also grow should Australia's High Court rule that some 700 U.S. passengers can be included in the class action.

“Phantom Thread,” the 2017 movie about a midcentury male designer and his younger female muse, unfurls as a cautionary tale about control gone wrong. In an early scene, Reynolds Woodcock (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) fits a dress on Alma (Vicky Krieps) and remarks that she has no breasts. The film’s writer and director, Paul Thomas Anderson, portrayed the fictional Woodcock as an uncompromising perfectionist who didn’t care much about the humans wearing his creations. Anderson based his exacting couturier on an amalgamation of larger-than-life midcentury male designers, from Cristóbal Balenciaga to Charles James. “I would keep seeing pictures of these couture houses,” Anderson told the British Film Institute, “and it was always a man with dozens of women behind him, in lab coats, doing his work.”

TORONTO (AP) — Vicky Krieps noticed that while there’s plenty of instruction for getting into a role, there's curiously little about getting out of one.
