The Obie Awards, a scrappy but venerable annual competition honoring the best theater staged Off and Off Off Broadway, has chosen “Dark Disabled Stories,” Ryan J. Haddad’s autobiographical work inspired by his experiences navigating the city with cerebral palsy, as the best new American play. The prize was announced on Saturday night, both by news release and on Spectrum News NY1, as the American Theater Wing, which presents the Obies, decided to forgo a costly ceremony — in most nonpandemic years, the Obies have been handed out at a boozy and often boisterous party — and instead to give grants of $1,000 to $5,000 directly to the winning artists and arts institutions. “These are unprecedented times, and it’s extremely challenging for theater right now, so we absolutely want to celebrate the achievements of Off and Off Off Broadway, but in doing so we want to have the most impact by putting money directly in the pockets of the artists and the companies making the work,” said Heather A. Hitchens, the Wing’s president and chief executive. “Everybody likes a party, and maybe some day it will make sense to do that again, but we’re not made of money — we’re a nonprofit, so how can we use our resources to be the greatest force for good right now?”The Obies, created by the Village Voice in the mid 1950s, have been in flux for years as the Voice foundered and the pandemic battered the theater industry. The Wing, with a board led by artists, has kept the Obies afloat with a combination of in-person and streaming ceremonies.

CNN —Jon Stewart is heading back to “The Daily Show.”The comedian, who during his 16-year run as host of the Comedy Central program established it as an entertainment and cultural force, will return to host the show each week on Mondays starting February 12, Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios announced Wednesday. After exiting “The Daily Show” in 2015, Stewart signed a deal with Apple to host a show for the technology company’s nascent streaming service. Convincing Stewart to return to “The Daily Show” is a major coup for Comedy Central. While Trevor Noah received critical acclaim for hosting program after Stewart exited, it never quite had the same cultural impact it did under Stewart’s stewardship. Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, which is responsible for much of the streamer’s content library, said episodes with Stewart will be available on the platform the day after they air on Comedy Central.

New York CNN —The Los Angeles Times is in disarray. The Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong-owned newspaper, which houses the largest newsroom in the western U.S., has been thrown into a state of mayhem as severe layoffs loom and senior editorial leaders abruptly call it quits. “I cannot overstate the level of chaos,” one staffer, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, candidly told me on Monday. Then, news of forthcoming mass layoffs ensued, prompting the employee’s union to stage a historic one-day walk out on Friday. “All we are asking for is the opportunity for our newspaper and hardworking journalists to be fairly compensated, and for the L.A. Times to have a fair chance to become a self-sustaining institution.”

The Coach Who Has Five Teams in the NFL Playoffs

It was a head-spinning week that saw football coaching greats Bill Belichick, Nick Saban and Pete Carroll all exit their jobs after decades roaming the sidelines. But there’s one venerable NFL head coach in his early 70s who still has a team in the playoffs. Actually, he has five of them.

Thais give digital spin to ancient 'floating basket' festival

Over the centuries, people have sent 'krathongs' - small, baskets made from plants and loaded with flowers, candles and bamboo - down waterways to make wishes and pay their respects to water spirits. The beautiful 'floating basket' or Loy Krathong festival lights up Bangkok's canals and rivers at night - but often leaves organisers scrabbling to clear canals clogged up with hundreds of thousands of soggy vessels the next morning. This will help reduce waste," said 11-year-old Jirayada Surapant, showing off her design by a Bangkok canal on Monday evening. Across the capital, monks set out in row boats to scoop up the physical krathongs and recycle them into animal feed. Three years ago, journalists at Sports Illustrated were worried that the venerable magazine’s new owners and operators were drastically lowering its standards. On Monday, the science and technology publication Futurism reported that Sports Illustrated had published product reviews under fake author names with fake author biographies. “If true, these practices violate everything we believe in about journalism,” the union representing Sports Illustrated journalists said in a statement after the report was published. “We deplore being associated with something so disrespectful to our readers.”The Arena Group, which publishes Sports Illustrated under a complicated management structure, blamed a vendor, AdVon Commerce, for the situation. Sports Illustrated licenses product reviews from AdVon, and AdVon assured the Arena Group that “all of the articles in question were written and edited by humans,” said Rachael Fink, an Arena Group spokeswoman.

Wherever they run, night trains are complicated, labor intensive and expensive to operate – one of the major reasons they went into decline in the first place. The $770 million contract could eventually see up to 370 new overnight carriages introduced to update Italy’s entire overnight train fleet. “Politicians must be clear: the night train market will be effectively closed for a very long time,” he says. So, what does all this mean for the much-vaunted night train revolution? With the honorable exception of government-subsidized Nightjet, which plans to expand rapidly over the next five years, European night train services have yet to match the hype.

Opinion | We Still Have Time to Stop the Worst

But are Israel’s actions — as the nation’s opponents argue — verging on ethnic cleansing or, most explosively, genocide? That means two important things: First, we need to define what it is that we are seeing, and second, we have the chance to stop the situation before it gets worse. That’s well over five times as many people as the more than 1,400 people in Israel murdered by Hamas. War crimes are defined in the 1949 Geneva Conventions and subsequent protocols as serious violations of the laws and customs of war in international armed conflict against both combatants and civilians. There is still time to stop Israel from letting its actions become a genocide.

But Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock and others continue to lose money. Most analysts say that there are too many streaming services and that the weakest will ultimately close or merge with bigger competitors. The entertainment industry’s underlying cable television and box office problems also remain dire, in some cases growing worse during the five months it took to restore labor peace. In July, Disney announced that it was exploring a once-unthinkable sale of a stake in ESPN, the cable giant that has powered much of Disney’s growth over the past two decades. Paramount Global’s once-venerable cable portfolio, centered on Nickelodeon and MTV, has also been pummeled by cord cutting; Paramount shares have dropped nearly 50 percent since May.

After bland western prequels to his flagship drama “Yellowstone,” producer Taylor Sheridan finds marginally more fertile territory in “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” a series that will devote each season to a different frontier lawman or outlaw. Eventually, Bass escapes, hiding out during the remaining days of the Civil War before settling down and trying his hand at farming. Dennis Quaid in "Lawmen: Bass Reeves." Club holding Broadcom 's (AVGO) investment prospects look bright – with or without cloud software maker VMWare (VMW) under its corporate roof. For now, though, the companies remain apart after Broadcom's planned $61 billion takeover of VMWare did not close Monday, as previously scheduled. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom YTD With VMWare, Broadcom would be a company with sales split roughly 50-50 between its traditional semiconductor division — an artificial intelligence beneficiary — and software, which typically is higher-margin revenue. Without VMWare, Broadcom would have freed up its capacity to reward shareholders in a different, but still meaningful, way. Even with the buyback silver lining, our hope is Broadcom completes the VMWare deal because it should boost Broadcom's earnings over time.

Inflation in the United States has unquestionably cooled after hitting 40-year highs last year. Other key inflation gauges, the more comprehensive Personal Consumption Expenditures price index and the wholesale-focused Producer Price Index, have moderated as well. A spike in gas prices and other components such as persistently high shelter costs have kept inflation elevated. Historically, political realignment has occurred when groups of voters change their affiliation to a new political party or candidate, especially around presidential and midterm elections. Yet the period between 1852 and 1860 is crucial here, for it saw the last time a major political party collapsed (the Whig Party in 1854) and the dissolution of another political party (the Democratic Party in 1860). The 1924 Democratic Party famously went through 103 ballots before agreeing on a compromise candidate, John W. Davis of West Virginia. Of course, party realignment is a tricky thing since we only come to know that it has happened in hindsight. A failure to reach a majority consensus signals the doom of an American political party.

Almost 9 million subscribers joined Netflix around the globe in the third quarter, surpassing Wall Street analysts' forecast for 6 million, according to LSEG. The strong performance showed Netflix was thriving despite Hollywood labor tensions that shut down a large swath of U.S. production. CNN —The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has suspended all its soccer matches amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group, Hamas. The FAF announced on Wednesday the suspensions were a way of showing “solidarity” with Palestinians. The declaration comes just days after the FAF offered to host all of the Palestinian national team’s upcoming international fixtures following the escalation of the decades-old conflict. The FAF said it will be hosting the Palestinian national team’s next home game, a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Australia scheduled for November 21. ‘Goosebumps’ Review: A Series of Safe Scares

Zack Morris Photo: DisneyOK, Boomer, this one is really not for you. But the near-venerable “Goosebumps”— R.L. Stine ’s series of horror-fantasy fables first published in 1992—has seen enough film adaptations, comic books, video games and TV series that Generations X, Y and Z have always considered it a current event. Far grimmer than its near-contemporary Harry Potter , the “Goosebumps” oeuvre shares a similar appreciation for humor among the dark arts and has likewise been a target of censors outraged by its grooming of children to be witches, warlocks, satanists and acolytes of the occult. It is hardly meant to be taken so seriously.

Rubin died Friday at a hospital in Manhattan after “a brief and sudden illness,” according to his nephew, David Rotter. “Steve Rubin was a great publisher,” Grisham said in a statement. “For more than a month, it was humanly impossible to miss ‘Fire and Fury,’" Rubin wrote in his memoir “Words and Music,” published earlier this year. Rubin joined Bantam Books, a venerable paperback publisher, in the mid-1980s, and remained there for six years before leaving for Doubleday. A potentially significant catalyst for Constellation Brands (STZ) stock is just a few weeks away, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Friday. Elliott has "the ability to suggest things including perhaps maybe getting rid of some of the disappointing spirits business," said Cramer. The beer portfolio led by Modelo saw 11.8% year-over-year sales growth, while its wine-and-spirits division saw a 14% drop in revenue on an annual basis. The Queen’s question returns with a vengeance
  + stars: | 2023-10-06 | by ( Felix Martin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
The world’s leading central banks had spent the previous two decades focusing on low inflation, neglecting risks to financial stability. Central bankers counter correctly that predictive accuracy is not the same as explanatory power. Yet it is far from clear how today’s independent central banks should respond to these overtly political struggles. In 2021, when the Phillips Curve was asleep at the wheel, the growth in the money supply was flashing red. The unfortunate truth is that there are many answers to the Queen’s question this time round – but no single magic solution.

In particular, before Solomon, Goldman nurtured many fiefs and then spread the wealth from the most successful ones across the firm. When both men struggled, senior partners left, and Goldman stumbled in its efforts to wind down its balance-sheet investments. Opinion: The Deep Space Network is in trouble
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Opinion Don Lincoln | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The Deep Space Network, or DSN, is an interconnected set of three radio telescope facilities spread across the globe. Indeed, without the DSN, NASA’s robotic exploration of deep space would simply not be possible. On the contrary, if humanity is going to once again venture into deep space, it will be crucial to be able to maintain a radio link with those intrepid explorers. Both of those missions, indeed all deep space programs, depend on reliable communication, or they will fail. The Deep Space Network is NASA’s link to the planets, and it needs additional support if we ever hope to boldly go where no one has gone before.
