Investors are piling into electric vehicle stocks after the latest Tesla numbers showed it beat expectations for vehicle deliveries. Vanda Research in a Thursday note said it's seeing signs of some rotation from AI stocks to EVs. "We expect to see more retail demand for EV stocks going forward," the note said, highlighting "laggards" such as Nio , Li and Plug in particular. Its base case for China-made EVs implies 38% annual offshore sales growth through 2030. EV stocks with upside To see which EV stocks are expected to continue to rise, CNBC Pro screened two ETFs on FactSet: the KraneShares Electric Vehicles & Future Mobility Index ETF and the Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF .

July 6 (Reuters) - Retail traders raised their exposure to U.S. stocks in June encouraged by healthy returns, with their focus shifting to electric-vehicle firms from artificial intelligence stocks earlier in the year. They poured in $1.4 billion per day on average in U.S. equities in the month, closing in the all-time record of $1.5 billion a day in March, Vanda Research said. Record vehicle deliveries by Tesla (TSLA.O), consistently a favorite among the retail crowd, have helped spark small-time investors' interest in EV stocks, including Rivian (RIVN.O), Iachini said. EVs have garnered increased demand on incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act and a competitive pricing environment. In contrast, demand for AI stocks, including C3.ai (AI.N), from retail investors has somewhat slowed from earlier this year after they rallied for weeks, Iachini added.

"We are positioned for a very big bond rally, and we think that risky assets are completely underestimating the risk of a recession or something nasty happening," he added. (.MERW0G1)An early sign that the bond outlook is improving came last week with data showing euro zone business growth stalled in June. In response, German bond yields, which move inversely to prices, posted their second biggest daily drop since March. But highlighting how hard economic data has become to read, higher-than-expected U.S. first quarter growth and German inflation sent yields surging on Thursday. Major central banks fighting a surge in inflation have collectively raised borrowing costs by over 3,750 bps since September 2021.

Retail investors are chasing the next tech rally with AI-related stocks like Micron, Vanda said. Though retail investor flows fell slightly, stock purchases are above the daily average since SVB's collapse. The firm identified four stocks that were gaining traction among retail investors as they search for new winners in the AI space. Still, retail investors had taken interest in the stock even before it posted its financial results, Vanda said, thanks to speculation it could be another AI gamble. Retail net purchases of the stock were about 145 times the daily average before its latest earnings report.

The bill, signed into law late last year, requires employers to automatically enroll all eligible workers into their retirement plans at a savings rate of 3% of salary. Americans had pension plans, Social Security benefits, and their own savings through plans like the 401(k). Those funds tend to be controlled by large asset managers. But through a process called proxy voting, large asset managers are able to vote on shareholder resolutions on behalf of their clients. Asset managers have “significant influence over company practices,” wrote shareholder advocacy group ShareAction in a recent report.

Retail investors may be getting cold feet about the dramatic rise in recent months for stocks tied to artificial intelligence. Vanda Research Senior Vice President Marco Iachini said in a note to clients Thursday that retail traders were trimming their positions in a few hot stocks. "Retail traders look to have taken some profits as share prices continued rallying. However, retail investors have sought to lock in some profits, especially in popular smaller-cap names like [ C3.ai] and [ Palantir ]," the note said. Nvidia is still seeing strong inflows, and Tesla has been the most popular stock for retail traders recently.

Investors are pouring cash into Tesla stock as part of a broader bet on the future of AI. Vanda Research said retail purchases of EV stocks other than Tesla made up just 6% of average daily Tesla purchases. Retail purchases of EV stocks other than Tesla make up just 6% of average daily Tesla purchases, and make up just 5%-10% of average daily Tesla purchases compared to the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, when Tesla inflows peaked. "Hence, we can confidently say that retail investors perceive TSLA as an AI proxy more than an EV story, at least for now." Institutional investors have also ramped up their Tesla bets, the note added, a sign that the appetite for Tesla stock has room to grow.

Retail investors have finally returned to the stock market, lured by the AI hype, Vanda Research said. The firm said retail investors helped drive a daily average flow of $1.36 billion into the stock market over the past week. The hype in artificial intelligence stocks like Nvidia, combined with the resolution of the US debt ceiling last week helped finally push retail investors back into the stock market. AI stocks should also see continued buying pressure from retail investors in the coming weeks, according to the note, and there's still room to run as retail investors buying activity has not yet reached worrying levels. Ultimately, the return of the retail investor to the stock market should help drive stock prices higher despite worries of a looming recession and frothy valuations from more bearish investors, according to Vanda.

In a recent tweet, Graham said he believes all the good AI companies to invest in are still private. This, he said, leaves few options for those public market investors wanting to invest in AI. Paul Graham says public market investors are missing out on a potential way to get in on the AI boom, since all the good companies to invest in are still private. For instance, Google recently led a $100 million round in generative AI startup, Runway, Insider reported. Yet, private investing in AI startup innovations may be where the biggest potential for a huge windfall, as Graham alludes to.

The S & P 500 is up more than 6% over the past three months, and retail investors are finally getting in on the action. Data compiled by Vanda Research shows retail investors recently bought $1.48 billion in U.S.-listed stocks — a three-month high. The S & P 500 fell 0.6% on Wednesday ahead of a key House vote on a deal that would raise the U.S. debt ceiling. "One day does not a trend make, but it does make us wonder if retail traders are on the precipice of joining this equity rebound, at last. The S & P 500 popped about 0.9% on Thursday and was headed for its best day since mid-May.

As billions of dollars have flooded into Big Tech over the last six weeks, bitcoin trading volumes and demand have slumped. Since April 25, the NYSE FANG+TM index of big tech and growth stocks has surged 24%, nearly three times the broader Nasdaq. The AI boom has gathered momentum despite the rise in bond yields and discount rates. This has highlighted bitcoin's underperformance and strongly suggests that outside the rarified world of Big Tech, investors are much more discerning. Indeed, just seven U.S. tech stocks have driven all of the positive S&P 500 returns so far this year, according to analysts at Barclays.

May 31 (Reuters) - The rally in the shares of Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) that briefly propelled its market value to the trillion-dollar club saw little participation by retail traders, data showed, the latest sign they were turning cautious due to growing recession fears. Retail buying in Nvidia shares on an average nearly halved to $27.9 million in May compared to February, Vanda Research data showed, even as it remained the fourth most-traded stock by individual investors. After a record net buying in U.S. stocks the first quarter, retail investors have largely remained on the sidelines amid stresses in the banking sector and signs of an economic slowdown. The total value of the stock traded by retail investors surged to $2.5 billion last Thursday, but still net purchases remained marginal at $43 million, Vanda Research said. J.P.Morgan data showed Nvidia was the third most traded stock by retail investors but the buy and sell orders were nearly even, indicating lower retail interest than in the first quarter.

SINGAPORE, May 18 (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar hit a seven-week peak on Thursday after President Joe Biden and top U.S. congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy worked towards avoiding a damaging debt default, while investors scaled back Federal Reserve easing expectations. Biden and McCarthy on Wednesday underscored their determination to strike a deal soon to raise the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, having agreed a day earlier to negotiate directly after a months-long standoff. "In the short-term, the debt ceiling is win-win for the dollar," said Viraj Patel, global macro strategist at Vanda Research. "If it gets worse, you're going to see a global hard landing and you will want to be owning dollars. Traders are pricing in around a 20% chance that the Federal Reserve raises its interest rate at its June meeting.

Traders are pricing in around a 20% chance that the Federal Reserve raises its interest rate at its June meeting. The dollar index firmed 0.2% to 103.08, near Wednesday's seven-week peak of 103.12. Elsewhere, the dollar rose to a ten-week high of 137.89 yen , extending Wednesday's nearly 1% gain against the Japanese currency.
Individual investors scooped up shares of single stocks and exchange-traded funds at a near-record clip in the first quarter. They appear to have learned some lessons in risk taking as well. Individuals bought a net $77.7 billion in equities and ETFs on U.S. exchanges in the first three months of the year, according to Vanda Research data, which excludes contributions to 401(k)s and other retirement accounts. That sum trails only the first quarters of 2021 and 2022, when they bought about $80 billion.
Retail investors have pared back their stock purchases as they remain hesitant to dive back into the market after a difficult 2022, when the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 fell 31% and 19.4%, respectively. But individual investors appear to be missing out on these gains for the most part, according to Vanda. Average retail investor allocations are very concentrated and largely titled towards tech stocks. A strong earnings season, however, could could boost risk appetite for the retail investor cohort. "Better figures or convincing forward guidance from bank or tech stocks will likely lead to a boost in retail purchases."
A plunge in the purchases of Tesla shares has underpinned the drop in individuals’ equity buying. Individual investors are losing their appetite for U.S. stocks, leaving equity markets without a dependable leg of support after a rocky first quarter. They bought beaten-down shares with a fury at the start of 2023 and chased the momentum as the S&P 500 climbed. Net purchases of U.S. equities by individuals reached a monthly record in February, according to Vanda Research data going back to 2014.
The ETF has slumped nearly 26% since March 8, when SVB's troubles became known, while the S&P Regional Banks Select Industry Index (.SPSIRBK) is down around 23%. Concerns over deposit flight are still swirling around some regional banks. He owns shares of large regional banks including Citizens Financial Group Inc (CFG.N), which have fallen about 22% so far this year, and US Bancorp (USB.N), which are down some 18%. Margie Patel, a senior portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, has been adding new positions in regional banks over the last few weeks, citing "value." Regional banks "need positive news that shows their deposits are holding firm or growing," said Rick Meckler, a partner at family office Cherry Lane Investments.
Retail investors are buying financial stocks in unprecedented amounts after the sector's recent rout, according to Vanda Research. Banks have been pummeled in the wake of Silicon Valley Bank's collapse and concerns over Credit Suisse 's financial situation. Regional bank stocks were particularly hard hit as investors worried whether they had balance sheet issues similar to SVB. Some investors were also buying shares of First Republic Bank, PacWest Bancorp and Truist Financial . Retail investors bought nearly twice as much as the previous week's daily average, totally $1.43 billion in purchases, according to Vanda Research.

What’s happening: Retail investors are pouring a record $1.5 billion per day into the stock market, according to data from Vanda Research. Brunswick has conducted its annual survey on the digital habits of institutional investors for over a decade. This year, it polled 257 institutional investors across North America, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Retail investors amass funds, and power: Retail investors now account for half of all wealth globally, according to a recent report by Bain & Company. Fed officials have expressed concern that a tight labor market could keep upward pressure on wages and, in turn, inflation.
Retail investors are buying fewer stocks as the market stagnates under the weight of higher interest rates and stubborn inflation — a loss of a key group to keep positive momentum going. Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn told CNBC earlier this month that investors should be bearish on stocks because of rising inflation. Along with the macroeconomic woes, Vanda thinks the dented enthusiasm from the retail audience is in part because interest in Tesla shares is waning. Tesla hosted an investors day to start the month that largely disappointed investors because of a lack of details about its future plans, including a possible cheaper vehicle. TSLA 1M mountain Tesla shares, 1 month Tesla shares are off 12% this month.
Individual investors can’t get enough of Tesla Inc. In recent weeks, they have scooped up shares of Elon Musk’s electric-vehicle maker at a frenzied pace, setting repeated records for one-day purchases. Already in 2023, they have spent a net $13.6 billion on Tesla shares, approaching the record sum of nearly $17 billion for all of last year, according to Vanda Research.
