Scientists unveil recreation of sacrificed Inca maiden in Peru

REUTERS/Ros Postigo Acquire Licensing RightsAREQUIPA, Peru, Oct 24 (Reuters) - The reconstructed head and torso of a young girl likely sacrificed to appease Incan gods was unveiled in Peru on Tuesday, with three-dimensional scans of her mummy helping produce the lifelike recreation more than 500 years after her death. But some time before then, the girl was sacrificed by a blow to the head, possibly in a ritual ceremony that sought divine relief from natural disasters, according to the scientists. It includes colorful attire, head covering and adornments, similarly based on the scans of the mummy. "Seeing her face like when she was alive, it's a different experience because it seems so real," he said. [1/6] A used KIA EV6 electric car is seen for sale outside the showroom of a used car dealer in Manchester, Britain, October 19, 2023. But that is changing as companies rush to scale up EV battery tests - some of which take just minutes. "If the second-hand car market doesn't work properly, the new car market doesn't work properly and the electric transition won't happen," said Alex Johns, business development manager at Altelium, which says it has received interest from other markets including China. The race to properly value used EVs is becoming urgent because of a looming influx of vehicles. "People just want less risk," when buying a used EV, said Battery Quick Check managing director Katharina Alamo Alonso.

The defending World Series champion Astros were again felled by a subpar start from Framber Valdez and lackluster play at home. But the Rangers got some insurance from an RBI double by Garver with one out in the eighth off Abreu. Josh Sborz walked Alex Bregman to start the Houston eighth and struck out Alvarez before José Abreu singled with one out. Abreu singled on a grounder to right field before Tucker grounded into a force out that left him out at second and sent Alvarez to third. Heim, who had a career-high 18 home runs in the regular season, also homered off Valdez in Game 2 of this series.

There's never been a better time to be a DINK

One variant of the DINK is the DINKWAD , double income couples without kids — but with a dog. AdvertisementAdvertisement"Some of those savings might ripple into an accumulation and increase in net worth," Heggeness said. What's more, the cost of raising one child to their high school years is estimated to be $310,605 — the bulk of a median DINK's net worth. For instance, single Americans with children have seen their net worth more than double over the last decade, and their net worth is outpacing younger, childless singles. Now, that rise in net worth might be due to the changing dynamics of how single parents are arriving at their destination.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jose Altuve thrives under pressure for the Houston Astros, able to stay calm in the biggest October moments even after another bench-clearing fracas against the Texas Rangers. “This dude is one of the baddest dudes I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some greats.”Baker wasn't in the dugout when Altuve hit his 26th career postseason homer, second in major league history behind Manny Ramirez (29). García, Abreu and Baker were all ejected. “The guy hits a three-run homer; the next time up he gets smoked,” Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. The 5-foot-6 Altuve, playing in his 101st postseason game for Houston, then pulled an 0-1 changeup over the left-field fence, just beyond the glove of a leaping Evan Carter.

HOUSTON (AP) — Jonah Heim homered, Nathan Eovaldi pitched six effective innings and the Texas Rangers beat Framber Valdez and Houston Astros 5-4 on Monday for a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series. They swept the Rays in the Wild Card Series and the Orioles in the Division Series, and then posted a 2-0 win at Houston in the ALCS opener. The Astros, who went 39-42 at home in the regular season, continued to struggle at Minute Maid Park. Valdez bobbled a chopper hit by Grossman for an error that allowed him to reach first and Semien to score. Alex Bregman also connected for the Astros, who went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

Participating in their seventh consecutive ALCS, the longest such streak in AL postseason history, the Astros have shown resilience plenty of times previously. Houston won't have to wait long for a chance to even things, as it plays host to the Rangers on Monday in Game 2 of the ALCS. Left-hander Framber Valdez (0-1, 10.38 ERA in postseason) is the scheduled starter for the Astros in Game 2. Valdez is 7-5 with a 2.90 ERA over 16 career appearances (13 starts) against the Rangers. Montgomery pitched five-hit ball over 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Taveras provided a two-run lead with his solo homer in the fifth. The playoff-tested Astros, in the ALCS for a seventh straight year, had a tough time getting anything going against Montgomery. Jose Leclerc struck out one in a perfect ninth for the save and the Rangers' second shutout of the playoff. John Jung singled with two outs, Taveras walked to load the bases and Verlander limited the damage by retiring Marcus Semien on a fly ball. September 23 - Cole Ragans produced his seventh quality start since being acquired by the Kansas City Royals, who rode an ambush first inning into a 7-5 win over the host Houston Astros on Friday. He allowed one run when Yordan Alvarez smoked a one-out double to left-center field that scored Jeremy Pena from first. But Ragans, acquired from Texas on June 30, thwarted the Astros repeatedly over his final four innings of work. When Alvarez and Alex Bregman walked in succession to open the sixth, Ragans buckled down again and recorded three consecutive outs to stymie the Astros once more. Ragans allowed two runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts over six innings by limiting the Astros to an 0-for-8 showing with runners in scoring position.

GENEVA (AP) — Venezuela’s government has intensified efforts to curtail democratic freedoms with use of threats, surveillance and harassment as President Nicolás Maduro faces a re-election contest next year, U.N.-backed human rights experts reported on Wednesday. An international fact-finding mission authorized by the Human Rights Council notes that violent repression between 2017 and 2019 eased after the coronavirus pandemic broke out the following year. A report by the mission three years ago decried “crimes against humanity” in Maduro's Venezuela. In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, the experts warned that political interference has been on the rise. The mission's latest report, based on interviews and talks with nearly 300 people, covers a period from January 2020 through last month.
