New York CNN —A high-stakes union election is underway at a Mercedes-Benz plant near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the only plant for the luxury automaker in North America. The fallout will be significant whether the workers at Mercedes-Benz vote to join the United Auto Workers union or not. And last month, it won a union election at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, its first victory in three attempts to organize the factory. Though a union win could generate momentum, it doesn’t mean a victory will mean other plants can overcome management opposition at other foreign-owned plants. Einride plans to open many EV charging stations for freight trucking on the West and East coasts, though California is the only state in which there are any EV freight charging stations of scale today. Voltera, which develops, owns and operates EV infrastructure, said the site was permitted, built, electrified and operational in under 18 months. "In the world of charging infrastructure, that's pretty remarkable," its CEO Matt Horton said in a statement. One of the first EV charging stations of scale for freight trucks is opening near the major ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, as the trucking market takes some limited, but significant steps to build the infrastructure required for a long-term transition to EV trucking and net-zero shipping. Additional EV charging projects at ports in New York and New Jersey, as well as the Pacific Northwest, are planned.

DETROIT – Volkswagen workers at a plant in Tennessee have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for a vote to join the United Auto Workers, the union announced Monday. In 2019, VW workers at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant rejected union representation in an 833-776 vote. The Chattanooga plant is Volkswagen's only U.S. assembly plant and employs over 4,000 autoworkers who would be eligible to vote for union representation. "We will fully support an NLRB vote so every team member has a chance to vote in privacy in this important decision. By the end of the UAW contracts, top wages are expected to surpass $42 an hour for production workers.

New York CNN —Trouble and turmoil continue at rental car company Hertz. But the problem for Hertz wasn’t necessarily that the cars were electric, and customers simply do not want to drive electric cars. There might not be a charging station, or enough time, for a rental car customer to charge an EV, Ives said. These cases sometimes resulted in Hertz customers being arrested and even imprisoned. Scherr wasn’t the one who decided to make the big bet on EV demand by rental car customers.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is seeking a union representation vote among more than 4,000 hourly workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The union has announced a broad-based campaign to win representation at the American plants of 13 nonunion automakers. That is slightly more than the union’s representation at the three unionized automakers, which have about 145,000 UAW members between them. The VW Chattanooga plant is the only factory operated by VW that does not have union representation. Once the election process starts, management often holds mandatory meetings with staff to make the case against union representation, and that convinces some earlier supporters of the union to end their support.
