  + stars: | 2024-09-15 | by ( Emma Tucker | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Within two hours of arriving at Apalachee High School in Winder, prosecutors said he committed the deadliest US school shooting since the March 2023 rampage at the Covenant School in Nashville, and the 45th this year. The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office arrive at the school a short while later with two school resource officers. An officer, sounding slightly out of breath, asks the dispatcher to “roll EMS.” She is heard confirming emergency medical services were en route to the high school. Law enforcement and first responders control traffic after a shooting took place at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. With the suspect detained, officers stream into Apalachee High, evacuating students from classrooms as paramedics tended to the wounded.

The market's turn toward treating good economic news as positive for stocks is pictured here in a chart from Citi strategists, showing the three-month correlation between the S & P 500 and the Citi U.S. Economic Surprise index has turned sharply higher. The S & P 500's low for the week was Wednesday morning, right at the 5400 level where it previously hit a low a week ago Friday after a tepid employment report. Forward 12-month S & P 500 earnings forecasts continue to rise smartly, now approaching $270. But, thanks to the past two months of sideways churn, that's down from 21.7 when the S & P first hit its current level in July. And the rally last week could well have front-run any potential positive inference from the Fed's move next week.

Window Rock, Arizona CNN —Nearing the end of the annual Navajo Nation parade route last Saturday, the Arizona Republican Party’s float — pulled by an 18-wheeler and adorned with Trump-Vance campaign signs — came to a halt. The Navajo Nation makes up the largest tribe in Arizona, with about 131,000 members, according to the US Census. A Marine veteran, Gallego said his ties to the Navajo Nation stem from his military veteran friends from the tribe. “I believe we have many strong, educated women, especially on the Navajo Nation. “Not everybody wants to help the Indigenous.”Her remote part of the Navajo Nation rarely gets visitors, let alone campaigns knocking on her door.

The family of an 11-year-old boy said he was suspended from his Virginia Beach, Virginia, school because administrators thought he waited too long to report that another student brought a bullet to class. Hong Kong CNN —For decades, Chinese workers have wrapped up their working lives at relatively young ages: 60 for men and as early as 50 for women. The announcement sparked immediate widespread discussion – and backlash – across Chinese social media. Some social media users appeared encouraged that the changes weren’t more drastic and included some flexibility. Major protests erupted in France in 2023 in response to a government attempt to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. Even for those of working age, employment remains a steep challenge following the pandemic and a raft of government-led industry crackdowns in recent years.

What’s more, when kids watched screens with their parents, the study found it didn’t help their language skills. Tulviste said the research team is planning a follow-up study to investigate patterns of screen use during the pandemic and the impact on kids’ language skills. But the negative impact on language development isn’t the only danger kids face when parents and guardians are on their phones, according to past research. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers advice on how to calm kids of different ages without screens on its website. Then, when they leave, I do my best to put my devices away and give my kids my full attention.

WASHINGTON — Thousands of overseas American diplomats are at risk of a sharp pay cut at the beginning of October unless Congress passes a legislative fix in the coming weeks. And a 22% reduction in their pay would be a needless and demoralizing harm. “The Department of State continues to work with Congress on the urgent need for an extension,” a State Department spokesperson said in a statement. The pay snafu, first reported by Politico, is the unintended consequence of a funding structure that requires action from Congress. With the fate of their wages tied to the funding fight, American diplomats could be left in the lurch.

Soon after, the mother’s syphilis test — given to all women before delivery — came back positive. In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 200,000 syphilis cases — the highest counts since 1950. Spreading the word about syphilisSome public health departments have launched eye-popping awareness campaigns, trying to raise the alarm among both the public and health care providers. Make syphilis testing convenientBeyond greater awareness, access to testing and treatment needs to be quick, easy and convenient, Chokshi said. But permanently bending the syphilis curve will require scaling these efforts nationally and promoting greater coordination between health care and public health.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. She has vowed to continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia,” an aide to the vice president said.

The controversial plan to regreen a desert
  + stars: | 2024-09-08 | by ( Laura Paddison | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
The Dutch engineer wants to transform a huge stretch of inhospitable desert into green, fertile land teeming with wildlife. “The only holistic way out of this situation is with large-scale ecological regeneration”So-called desert regreening projects are not new, and this is one of a number around the world seeking to transform arid landscapes. Costfoto/NurPhoto/Getty ImagesFor van der Hoeven, it was further proof his plan could work. “The scale reaches a level that helps prove that restoration can be done on a planetary scale.”It would add to other huge desert regreening projects also underway. The project was scheduled to kick off this December, but conflict has slowed everything down, van der Hoeven said.

However, the trend is ruffling more than a few feathers, due to the airport security line being one of the top places in the world where it’s imperative to avoid dilly-dallying. Let’s also not forget that with all those shoes passing through security trays, you may as well be laying your items straight out on the floor. In 2018, a European study found that airport trays are the least hygienic part of the airport, carrying more germs than toilets. So while hand sanitizer doesn’t typically feature in these airport tray photos and videos, it should probably play a key part in the aftercare. “As long as the staged glamor photos are not causing delays or issues with other passengers in the checkpoint, there are no issues.

The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record, according to the European Union's climate monitor, extending an alarming run of temperature records that has put the planet firmly on course to notch its hottest year in human history. The summer months were found to be 0.69 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for the June-August period. It surpasses the previous record from June-August last year, which was 0.66 degrees Celsius above the average baseline. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of C3S, said the world had experienced the hottest June and August, the hottest day on record and the hottest boreal summer on record in the space of just three months. "This string of record temperatures is increasing the likelihood of 2024 being the hottest year on record," Burgess said in a written statement.

Read previewThe US has promised Ukraine a new military aid package including more Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The US-made armored vehicles, which offer maneuverability, versatility, and sufficient firepower, have proven valuable to Ukraine efforts on the battlefield — more so than the main battle tanks and other heavy armor it's received. The US announced a new military aid package for Ukraine valued at $250 million to meet Ukraine's critical defense needs. One reason is that its received more Bradleys than it has main battle tanks from Western nations. Bradleys have gone up against a variety of Russian armor, either holding their own or winning the fight.

Parents, put down your phones (sometimes)
  + stars: | 2024-09-06 | by ( Dr. Katie Hurley | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
As a therapist who works with teenagers, I routinely hear from clients that their parents consistently criticize kids’ phone use but don’t curb their own use. Parents often tell me the same thing — their kids are glued to their phones and don’t listen when they try to engage them. And when parents feel rejected, they also turn their attention to their phones. I tell parents and kids alike that everyone needs to make changes in their technology habits to restore positive communication and trust. Keeping phones out of the bedroom is a common rule among parents of tweens and teens, yet this rule doesn’t often apply to the parents (guilty as charged).

Russia on Tuesday issued words of caution to France over its detainment of Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of messaging app Telegram, suggesting the move may be politically motivated. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on a Tuesday call with journalists urged Paris to provide evidence to support its allegations against Durov, Reuters and Russian state news agency Tass reported. "The charges are very serious indeed," Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters-translated comments. Peskov suggested that Durov's arrest could be viewed as both restricting freedom of speech and an act of intimidation if France fails to provide serious evidence of his guilt, Reuters and Tass reported. They still wear suffragist-white outfits and cheer on the prospect of “Madam President.”But eight years after Hillary Clinton became the first woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket, Democrats are sending American women a more sober and urgent message even as they try to elect another barrier-breaking candidate. Republican policies, they argue, have had disastrous and once-unthinkable consequences for the health and autonomy of women and their families since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. A second term for former President Donald J. Trump, they warn, would be even more dangerous. “Simply put,” Vice President Kamala Harris said this week from the stage of her party’s convention, “they are out of their minds.”

The United States is initiating new peace talks on Wednesday that are aimed at stopping Sudan’s catastrophic civil war, with this push for dialogue driven by growing alarm that the conflict is sending the country deeper into a famine that experts warn could become the world’s worst in decades. But Sudan’s military, one of the war’s two main belligerents, has said it will not attend the negotiations in Switzerland, stymying hopes of a quick cease-fire in a fight between the forces of rival generals that has now lasted 16 months. Famine was officially declared earlier this month in Sudan’s western Darfur region, and other areas are expected to follow. By one estimate as many as 2.5 million Sudanese could die from hunger by the end of September. Appalled at the scale of the war-induced catastrophe in Sudan, a sprawling country in northeastern Africa, American officials said it was urgent to begin the new peace drive, even if chances of a breakthrough seem slim.

It was April 2022, weeks after Russia had invaded Ukraine and touched off an international crisis, and two Republican lawmakers had rushed to be the first to travel to the besieged country. Now Ms. Pelosi wanted to quickly arrange her own visit — and she wanted Mr. Crow, whose national security background distinguished him in his party, to come with her. A late-night phone call from Ms. Pelosi to Mr. Crow would have been improbable when he first came to Congress in 2019. Hailing from a competitive district in Colorado, he had run as a centrist and avowed detractor of the liberal Ms. Pelosi, and after he knocked off a Republican incumbent he pledged that he would not vote for her for speaker. But since then, his credentials — including three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and a Bronze Star, as well as a law degree and a background in private-sector investigations — have made Mr. Crow a go-to lawmaker for Democratic leaders on difficult national security issues.
