CNN —Three former New Mexico State University basketball players have been charged with felony sex crimes and other offenses over allegations they were hazing teammates and student staff members – accusations that helped prematurely end the team’s 2022-23 season – the state attorney general said Thursday. The offenses are alleged to have happened from August to November 2022, grand jury indictments released by Torrez’s office say. Washington, a junior guard last season, and Bradley, then a sophomore forward, each face five counts of false imprisonment and criminal sexual contact. CNN has sought comment from the attorney general’s office and New Mexico State University. The Aggies resumed their men’s basketball program under a new coach, and the team played its first two games of the 2023-24 regular season this week.

Even though the suspect, a fellow student, is in federal custody, the constant threat of anti-Semitism looms over us still. I applied to Cornell University, where I’m now in my sophomore year, in part to get away from all that. My classmate who allegedly made those heinous threats against Jews wanted us to cower in fear, or worse, return hate for hate.

CNN —Police at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill responded to an “armed and dangerous person on or near campus,” according to an alert from the university on Monday. CNN —Two former New Mexico State University (NMSU) men’s basketball players filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against former head coach Greg Heiar, three former NMSU players, assistant head coach Dominique Taylor and the NMSU Board of Regents, citing alleged hazing and sexual assault incidents within the team. Benjamin and Odunewu say they reported the alleged incidents to the NMSU coaching staff but that no action was taken, according to the lawsuit. “This action is clearly needed, especially after receiving additional facts and reviewing investigation reports related to the hazing allegations involving student-athletes on the team,” New Mexico State University Chancellor Dan E. Arvizu said in a statement to CNN in February. At the time, New Mexico State University said it was hiring “another law firm to conduct another internal investigation” according to the lawsuit. The gunman has been identified as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, by Michigan State University Police in a tweet (here). The same account posted tweets about being wrongfully identified as the shooter in social media posts (here) and (here). The Detroit News reported one confirmed fatality on campus, inside Berkey Hall, citing Michigan State University (MSU) spokesperson Emily Guerrant, but Reuters could not independently verify that information. "There are multiple reported injuries," MSU said on its official police and public safety Twitter feed. Several campus building had been cleared and secured nearly two hours after the gunfire was first reported on campus, MSU police said. MSU is a major public institution of higher education whose flagship East Lansing campus accounts for 50,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on Twitter that she was being briefed on the East Lansing shooting.

Frat parties were suspended at Cornell University after at least four students reported being drugged and one described being sexually assaulted at fraternity-affiliated off-campus houses, officials said Monday. The university police department and authorities in the city of Ithaca, where the Ivy League school of nearly 23,000 students is located, are investigating, the statement said. The school statement said the alleged crimes reportedly occurred off-campus at buildings affiliated with registered fraternities. The school officials did not name the fraternities.
