By law, an election needs to be held within 60 days of the publishing of the presidential decree dissolving parliament. "I hope that time, sooner rather than later, will allow us to clarify what happened," Rebelo de Sousa said. By calling the March election, Rebelo de Sousa also addressed the need of the PS to pick a new leader to run. Earlier, PS President Carlos Cesar said March would be the best timing, while other parties pointed to January or February. "It is urgent to reestablish trust and prestige in democratic institutions," the leader of the PSD, Luis Montenegro, said after the president announced the election.

However, they showed admirable fight and no little spirit in Sunday's singles before slipping to a 16-1/2-11-1/2 defeat. "I said it before the event, I thought this was the closest team that I think I've been on," Koepka told a press conference. There's usually a couple misfits or people that just aren't a part of the team, but we all were one. "The loss has absolutely nothing to do with team camaraderie because this is probably the closest team I've ever been a part of." "My overwhelming feeling is pride - pride in these guys," he said.

EU chief pledges migrant action plan in Italy's Lampedusa
  + stars: | 2023-09-17 | by ( Yara Nardi | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
REUTERS/Yara Nardi Acquire Licensing RightsLAMPEDUSA, Italy Sept 17 (Reuters) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday visited the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is struggling with a surge in migrant arrivals, and promised a 10-point EU action plan to help Italy deal with the situation. Nearly 126,000 migrants have arrived in Italy so far this year, almost double the figure by the same date in 2022. Von der Leyen was accompanied by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the car carrying them to Lampedusa's migrant reception centre was briefly blocked by locals protesting over the burden facing the island. The plan includes using the EU's external borders agency Frontex to identify migrants arriving in Italy and repatriate those not eligible for asylum. Frontex would also step up sea and aerial surveillance of migrant boats and help crack down on people-smugglers, von der Leyen said, adding that she had already spoken to several EU leaders about the plan and was confident of their support.

LAMPEDUSA, Italy, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on Friday for the European Union to act jointly "with a naval mission if necessary" to prevent migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa. Meloni posted a video message on social media promising tough action in response to a surge in migrant arrivals this week which have overwhelmed the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa. "I intend to reiterate a request for an immediate EU mission to block the departure of migrant boats," said Meloni, for whom the swelling number of arrivals has become a major political headache. It's part of the decades-long trend in which Americans have scaled back their charitable giving. There's evidence that this shift has impacted charitable giving. From 2000 to 2016, the share of Americans giving to religious causes fell from roughly 47% to 32%. Other donors have shifted their giving to political causes that wouldn't be classified as charitable giving either. Looking forward, Birkholz said he's optimistic the total giving figure will bounce back in 2023.

Pot producer Canopy raises going concern doubts, shares tumble

June 23 (Reuters) - Shares of Canada's Canopy Growth (WEED.TO) fell 6.5% on Friday after the pot producer posted a wider quarterly loss over the previous year and raised doubts about the company's ability to continue as a going concern. Canopy said it identified certain trends in the booking of sales for BioSteel, leading it to launch an internal review. As a result of the review, Canopy said it has let go of several members of BioSteel's leadership team. Sarwat added that Canopy was still burning through cash and including going concern risk in the filing makes Canopy USA's rationale unclear, as cash won't flow back to the U.S. unit without federal legalization. Canopy is eyeing an entry into the U.S. cannabis market through Canopy USA.
