The Spaniard lapped Monza's 'Temple of Speed' with a best time of one minute 21.355 seconds with McLaren's Lando Norris second and 0.019 slower in a second session that was twice red-flagged. Red Bull's Verstappen was top of the first session, in 1:22.657, ahead of a weekend that could secure him a record 10th win in a row. Sainz was second fastest in that opening practice. Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes used only hard tyres during the opening session.

Verstappen goes for a record 10th win in a row
  + stars: | 2023-08-30 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix from seventh on the starting grid last year with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on pole but finishing second. Red Bull have won every race so far this season, 14 in a row including the 2022 finale in Abu Dhabi, and are again favourites at Monza's fast layout. Since Lewis Hamilton's fifth Italian GP win with Mercedes in 2018 no driver has managed a repeat victory in the former royal park outside Milan. Talk of a 'Monza jinx' may be premature but this is a season where straws are being clutched more desperately. For Gasly, who lives in Milan, it is effectively a home race and one with a special place in his heart.

The German, then driving for Red Bull, completed the same feat during his 2013 title win. Alonso had started the race in fifth but – Verstappen aside – put on the driving performance of the day. “It was probably one of the more difficult races to win, but nine in a row is something I never even thought about,” said Verstappen. Red Bull boss Christian Horner was less coy about the achievements of his star man and indeed the team as a whole. Alain Prost and Vettel, five and seven race wins ahead of Verstappen as things stands, could be overtaken before the 2023 season ends given that nine races remain.

[1/2] Libyan Foreign Minister Najla el-Mangoush attends a joint press conference at the conclusion of the Libya Stabilization Conference, in Tripoli, Libya, October 21, 2021. Mangoush had said her meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen in Rome was unplanned and informal, but an Israeli official told Reuters it had lasted two hours and was approved "at the highest levels in Libya". The meeting is contentious because Libya does not formally recognise Israel and there is widespread public support across the Libyan political spectrum for the Palestinian cause of creating an independent state in territory Israel occupies. The Libya prime minister sees Israel as a possible bridge to the West and the U.S. administration," the official said. Libya's parliament based in the east, which rejects the GNU, said on Sunday it would hold hearings into the meeting with the Israeli minister.

The eight points scored marked the first time this season that Mercedes had failed to take at least double figures from a weekend. "I think we stayed out catastrophically too long (in the first stint)," Wolff told Sky Sports television. "I'd rather have a fast race car and a mediocre result even if it hurts," said Wolff. Verstappen now leads Perez, his closest rival, by a mighty 138 points with nine races remaining. Red Bull lead Mercedes by 285 points with Aston Martin 40 points further back and 14 ahead of Ferrari. Verstappen came in a lap later but resumed well down the field and set about closing the gap. The safety car was deployed from lap 16 to 21 when U.S. rookie Logan Sargeant crashed his Williams at turn eight. Verstappen appeared to be cruising to victory until the final deluge and the halt after Alfa Romeo's Guanyu Zhou crashed heavily, without injury.

The Dutch driver, victorious for the third year in a row at his home race on Sunday, said the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku in April was key to his subsequent success. He finished second then to Mexican team mate Sergio Perez, the last time he has stood lower than the top step of the podium. "I think I learned a lot from the race in Baku how to do some things with the car, how to set it up," Verstappen told reporters at Zandvoort. "It was probably one of the more difficult races to win, but nine in a row is something I never even thought about," said Verstappen. There’ll be books; it will linger onIn galleries; but all that remainsFor us will be concrete and tyres. Larkin wrote these words in 1972. On the basis of a trip through England and Scotland in summer 2023 I can report that his fears were premature. British conservatism, of which Larkin was an eccentric representative, has always had a stronger conservationist streak than its American cousin. The Conservative Party, in power for most of this period, is often blamed for backing post-financial crisis austerity and lurching into Brexit.

The autos supplier expects sales of 14-15 billion euros ($31.82 billion) in the tyres segment from 14.5-15.5 billion previously, citing a declining market for tyre replacement in Europe and North America. But the rise in costs on wages, salaries, logistics, energy and materials would be lower than previously forecast at 1.4 billion euros from 1.7 billion. It was negotiating inflation-related price increases with customers for the second quarter, it added. Preliminary figures showed global passenger car and light commercial vehicle production grew by around 16% in the second quarter compared to last year, it added.

The Ukraine War Changed This Company Forever

Yellow and orange excavators slowly danced around a maze of muddy pits, swinging giant fistfuls of dirt as a chorus line of trucks traipsed across the landscape. This 50-acre plot in Oradea, Romania, close to the border with Hungary, beat out scores of other sites in Europe to become the home of Nokian Tyres’ new 650 million-euro, or $706 million, factory. Like an industrial-minded Goldilocks, the Finnish tire company had searched for the just-right combination of real estate, transport links, labor supply and pro-business environment. Geopolitical risk “was the starting point,” said Jukka Moisio, the chief executive and president of Nokian. That was not the case before Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
