Special Counsel Jack Smith delivers remarks on a recently unsealed indictment including four felony counts against former President Donald Trump on August 1, 2023 in Washington, DC. Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesAttorneys for Donald Trump will continue their legal efforts to throw off special counsel Jack Smith and the classified documents case against the former president in Florida on Monday. Trump’s attorneys will battle prosecutors in court on the second part of Trump’s argument that Smith’s appointment was illegitimate, focusing on how he’s being funded. On Friday, prosecutors, defense attorneys and third parties fought over whether Smith was legitimately appointed as special counsel, an argument district Judge Aileen Cannon seemed skeptical of during the hearing. “President Biden’s DOJ is paying for this politically motivated prosecution of Biden’s chief political rival ‘off the books,’ without accountability or authorization,” Trump’s attorneys argued in their filing earlier this year.

Doug Burgum, a possible Trump vice presidential pick, tried to reset the balance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. Fewer voters worry about the cognitive health of Trump, who is only three years younger at 78. “He beat Paul Ryan,” Trump said, referring to the vice presidential debate in 2012 when Biden dispatched Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s running mate. There is growing speculation about Trump’s approach after his hyper-aggressive and angry performance in the first debate against Biden in 2020 backfired. Unlike Trump, who spent the weekend creating headlines, Biden hunkered down at the presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park north of Washington.

CNN —CNN’s presidential debate will feel like something new for most Americans, but it is actually a return to the roots of presidential debates. J. Former President Donald Trump on Saturday gave a brief glimpse of the ammunition he is loading up against President Joe Biden's handling of the economy ahead of the first presidential debate next week. On inflation specifically, Trump foreshadowed a tactic he said he might use at the upcoming debate against Biden on June 27. Maybe I should save it for the debate," Trump said moments before taking out a miniature box of Tic Tac candies and holding a regular sized box next to it. But I will end the Biden inflation nightmare." But something like Trump's Tic Tac stunt will not be permitted at the Thursday debate where props and pre-written notes are prohibited.

Still, conversations about a possible drift toward Donald Trump, though, are evident in the several Jewish elected Democratic leaders who grimaced and ducked when asked by CNN to discuss their sense of Jewish support for Biden. Talking with Jewish voters in Michigan, “I’ve had a couple of people say point blank, ‘How could any Jew vote for a Democrat?’” said Troy Zukowski, the West Michigan chair of the Michigan Jewish Democrats. The president does have some key Jewish voices of support in important places. Trump’s support among Jewish voters in 2020, at 30% according to Associated Press exit polls, was the highest for a Republican presidential candidate in decades. The expected central theme of that effort, according to one of the people involved, will be: As a Jewish American, do you feel safer than you did four years ago?

President Biden is at Camp David, the presidential country retreat, for the weekend. The presidential campaign is entering a crucial phase. Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump will face off in an unusually early debate on CNN on Thursday as polls reflect a tightening race. AdvertisementBut similar to most national polls, Trump leads Biden on the question of which candidate would better handle the economy. In 2020, Biden won Pennsylvania by roughly 80,000 votes out of more than 6.9 million ballots cast. And over 604,000 of those ballots cast for Biden came from Philadelphia voters. He can easily find himself among receptive audiences in the city's numerous Black churches, where a loyal base of older Black voters are overwhelmingly supporting his bid for a second term. Biden has stumbled with younger Black voters over issues like the conflict in Gaza and student-loan debt relief.

Trump will address a gathering of Christian conservatives Saturday afternoon in Washington, DC, before traveling to Philadelphia for a more traditional campaign rally in a key battleground. Trump’s campaign is relishing the juxtaposition of the two candidates’ preparation styles. “While Joe Biden’s advisors force him to hide away at Camp David for some much-needed rest, President Trump is keeping up with his busy campaign schedule,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. The Biden campaign slammed Trump’s appearance at the Washington event as proof of where he stands on the issue. The Trump campaign has sought to drive a wedge between Biden and his birth state by hammering the president over inflation and crime.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden come into Thursday’s presidential debate as incredibly well-known quantities defined by shared unpopularity and competing weaknesses. But their most important liabilities — for the incumbent, his decrepitude and his record on inflation; for the challenger, an unfitness distilled and confirmed by the events of Jan. 6 — feel too well known to be worth discussing further until we see what happens on the stage. Maybe Biden’s entire campaign will implode when he answers a question about inflation with a Grandpa Simpson ramble about the price of a frozen custard on Rehoboth Beach in 1968. Maybe Trump will turn into Colonel Jessep under Jake Tapper’s questioning and claim full responsibility for the 2021 riot at the Capitol. But before the two men meet with those or other destinies, it’s worth giving some space to their crucial secondary weaknesses, the places where each candidate’s support might be undermined among those “double-hater” voters who regard each candidate’s primary liabilities as canceling the other’s out.

With his two impeachments, a criminal conviction and an attempt to overturn the last election, Trump gave Biden plenty to work with. Biden has been road testing his character attacks on Trump for weeks in fundraising events and they’re now increasingly being parroted by campaign officials. Biden seeks to move the goalposts with ads during soccer tournamentThe Biden campaign is now making daily pitches to a significant corner of his coalition showing signs of stress. CNN —The historic rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is anything but a rerun, with their first presidential debate next week set to showcase a vastly different set of issues driving their bitter duel for the White House. It feels like an upside-down lifetime ago since the pair last appeared together on a debate stage. “That’s the thing you’re going to see coming out in this debate: What was the world like under Trump?” Waltz said on CNN. Trump suggested Biden would be “pumped up” for the debate, before insinuating, without any evidence, that the president uses cocaine. Trump gets the final word at CNN debate after coin flip

CNN —Former President Donald Trump will get the final word when he debates President Joe Biden on CNN next week, after a coin flip to determine podium placement and the order of closing statements. Trump’s campaign then chose for the former president to deliver the last closing statement, which means Biden will go first at the conclusion of the debate. Biden and Trump are set to make history on June 27 in the first presidential debate between an incumbent and a former president. For Trump, delivering the final closing statement in CNN’s debate is a notable difference from his New York criminal trial and conviction last month. The debate qualification window closed just after midnight Thursday, with only Biden and Trump meeting the constitutional, polling and ballot qualification requirements CNN laid out in May.

Racine, Wisconsin CNN —Days after reportedly calling Milwaukee “horrible” behind closed doors, former President Donald Trump will rally with his supporters just south of the city in one of the country’s top battleground states. The Trump campaign pushed back on some of the public characterization of the alleged remark, saying he was referring to crime and “voter fraud.” As his alleged comment reverberated around the Badger State, Trump clarified to a Fox News reporter, “I love Milwaukee. Milwaukee – in addition to the state capital of Madison – is a center of Democratic power in Wisconsin and home to more voters than any other city in the state. One in five of the votes for Joe Biden en route to his narrow Wisconsin victory in 2020 were cast in Milwaukee. “In a state that’s decided on a razor’s edge, that may ultimately cost Donald Trump the election,” Johnson said.

“In the courtroom we see Donald Trump for who he is. “And a president who is fighting for your family.”For months, Biden and his team refrained from using Trump’s legal woes in their arguments against him. Read previewIn 2020, the first presidential debate between then-President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden devolved into a political grudge match, filled with insults. Trump largely disregarded the intended format of the debate by constantly interrupting Biden. But the 2024 election debates between Biden and Trump are poised to be much more structured and less chaotic. And microphones will be muted for both Biden and Trump when the opposing candidate is speaking. The debate will also be held just a few weeks before Trump, 78, is due for his sentencing in Manhattan.

President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump will each have two minutes to answer questions — followed by one-minute rebuttals and responses to the rebuttals. Red lights visible to the candidates will flash when they have five seconds left, and turn solid red when time has expired. The two men are readying themselves for the debate in ways almost as different as their approaches to the presidency itself. The Biden operation is blocking off much of the final week before the debate, after he returns from Europe and a California fund-raising swing, for structured preparations. Mr. Trump has long preferred looser conversations, batting around themes, ideas and one-liners more informally among advisers.

CNN —With less than two weeks until the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, CNN has released additional details on the parameters agreed upon by the Trump and Biden campaigns. Both candidates agreed to appear at a uniform podium, and their podium positions will be determined by a coin flip. In order to meet CNN’s qualifications for the debate, candidates must satisfy the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution to serve as president. Both Biden and Trump meet those requirements, as do Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West and Jill Stein, who are running on non-major-party tickets. Though not impossible in Kennedy’s case, it is less likely that candidates other than Biden and Trump will meet those requirements.

By almost any measure, Cimarron County is “out there.” Situated at the very tip of the Oklahoma Panhandle, and sharing borders with Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, it is both rural and remote. Outside of Boise City, the county seat, the only substantial trees are those that surround isolated farmhouses, dark green islands floating on a golden ocean. In Boise City, pop. “I believe he’ll be a pro-life president in the future also.”Many senior Trump administration alumni and allies are now mapping out and drafting policy options for a second Trump term. A second Trump term would also put back in place and expand restrictions on Title X grants – federal funds for public and nonprofit groups that provide family planning. Resurrecting these actions in a second Trump would almost entirely be up to the discretion of whomever he appoints to lead the relevant federal agencies. With Roe v. Wade’s protections erased, anti-abortion activists would like a second Trump administration to push harder than it did before – especially in restricting access to mifepristone. Abortion rights advocates worry he could play an outsize role shaping abortion restrictions in a potential second Trump administration.
