Amid the escalating climate crisis, Nishida and 13 other Hawaiian youth advocates sued the Hawaii Department of Transportation in 2022 over transportation-related greenhouse-gas emissions. The lawsuit, Navahine F. v. Hawaii Department of Transportation, is scheduled to go to trial next summer. It’s usually an inexpensive, efficient way to transport crops, as a typical group of 15 barges lashed together carries as much cargo as about 1,000 trucks. A narrowed shipping lane also means barges from different companies must squeeze into limited space, forcing backups and delays. Months of dry and warm weather have hit the Midwest hard, damaging crops in much of the region west of the Mississippi River. In Kansas, 40% of the soybean crop was reported in poor or very poor condition, with the same conditions for 40% of the corn crop in Missouri. BOGOTA, July 27 (Reuters) - Colombian police have seized property and bank accounts worth 1.3 trillion pesos ($329 million), proceeds from the sale and export of stolen crude oil, officials said on Thursday. To sell the stolen oil, criminal groups mixed it with legally-bought crude so it could be exported via front companies, police said. Colombia's majority state-owned oil company Ecopetrol (ECO.CN) was the main victim of the scheme, costing it 60 billion pesos, police added. The gangs stole crude from Colombia's Cano Limon-Covenas pipeline which runs parallel to the border with Venezuela. Furthermore, "large quantities" of light Venezuelan crude were brought into Colombia before being mixed with Colombian oil and exported via the Cano Limon-Covenas pipeline, the statement said.

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Reuters) - U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Thursday his agency has national security concerns about Chinese autonomous vehicle suppliers in the American market. "Whether we are talking about hardware or software, in the same way there are concerns around telecom or TikTok, there are concerns around transportation technologies," Buttigieg said in an interview with Reuters. Buttigieg said the United States needs to better understand "the true ownership of the different enterprises that are supplying different elements of our transportation systems." The lawmakers were particularly concerned about AV vehicle and equipment testing in the United States. Their letter cites data from California regulators showing seven Chinese firms tested autonomous vehicles in the most-populous U.S. state last year.

The adoption of electric vehicles represents the biggest shift in our energy and transportation systems in more than a century—but it’s also the biggest shift in consumer electronics since the debut of the iPhone. On both counts, progress is accelerating in the U.S. And on both counts, we are far from where we need to be.

CNN recently spoke with Malek about what travel will look like by 2050. CNN: Do you think supersonic air travel will return to the skies? Malek: So we’ve seen supersonic planes in the past and I do think we’ll see supersonic planes in the future. So now it’s no longer just a question of will we see supersonic planes, but will they be fueled by net zero carbon fuels? Historically, we’ve started with ‘what do cars need, what do planes need?’ But planes and cars are here just for us.

Hill Republicans are increasingly voicing their issues with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Sen. Capito told The Hill that Buttigieg had a "push" for everything "to be climate and politically correct." The Department of Transportation has defended Buttigieg's performance in handling recent crises. Secretary Buttigieg has been a vocal champion of President Biden's bipartisan infrastructure law. "Before, if you got your flight delayed, you weren't like 'oh that damn Elaine Chao,'" a Democratic operative told The Hill, referring to former President Donald Trump's transportation secretary.
Elon Musk met two White House officials to discuss increasing US electric vehicle production. The Tesla CEO talked to Biden's advisors about laws including the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. It comes after Musk criticized Biden for not recognizing Tesla's contribution to EV production. Jean-Pierre also said: "The outreach and the meeting says a lot of how important the President thinks the bipartisan infrastructure legislation is." The $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill was signed into law in November 2021.

HyperloopTT to go public via SPAC led by former Disney execs

Nov 22 (Reuters) - High-speed transportation systems maker Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) said on Tuesday it would list its shares in the United States through a deal with a blank-check firm at a pre-money valuation of $600 million. The special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Forest Road Acquisition Corp II (FRXB.N), which is led by former Disney executives Tom Staggs and Kevin Mayer, is expected to provide the combined company $330 million in net proceeds if the SPAC shareholders do not withdraw their money before the deal closes. HyperloopTT, which makes vacuum tube-based ground transportation systems with airplane speeds, has agreed to a SPAC merger at a time when the market's appetite for such deals have fizzled, as the economic outlook worsens with rising interest rates and inflation. The current shareholders and convertible note holders of HyperloopTT will hold $289 million worth of common shares in the company after the deal closes, the company said. A SPAC is a listed company without any business operations, formed to solely raise money and merge with other companies.
Slumping markets have investors pulling back from funding startups that make internet-connected devices for retailers, threatening to choke an innovation pipeline for emerging tools like smart shopping carts and inventory management robots. Total venture-capital funding for startups developing IoT technology specifically for retailers is on pace to drop 65.1% from 2021 to $188.2 million by the end of the year—one of the hardest hit subsectors in the IoT market, the firm said. Like most commercial software applications, connected devices in recent years have become an integral part of retailers’ day-to-day operations. He said the company would continue to invest in these and other tech tools that help customers, despite tougher economic conditions. IoT technology is critical for the food company, Mr. Basu said, because it also enables Goya to implement cybersecurity projects in its plants.
In Lower Saxony, in northern Germany, the first hydrogen-powered commuter trains were officially commissioned for full-time service after two years of extensive testing. Otherwise, the lack of hydrogen infrastructure would have rendered the project not viable. Alstom is positioning the iLint as a like-for-like replacement for diesel trains serving regional rail routes that have not been electrified. According to Soua, maintenance costs on hydrogen trains are much lower, and hydrogen-powered trains will cost less than diesel after about 15 years of operation. The company has already signed up its second customer from Germany, as the Rhine-Main region has ordered 27 iLint trains, and similar contracts have been inked in Italy and France.
Automakers are now shifting to electric vehicles, which could make up one-quarter of new sales by 2035 , analysts project. Around the world, governments and automakers are focused on selling newer, cleaner electric vehicles as a key solution to climate change. Some Democrats have proposed reviving that program to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles. In that scenario, the researchers found, the United States could cut emissions just as deeply with around 205 million electric vehicles. “Right now it can be inconvenient to own an electric vehicle if there are no charging stations around.
