PARIS (AP) — Police arrested a man climbing Thursday on the Eiffel Tower, leading to visitors being temporarily stranded at the summit — including a reporter for The Associated Press and a Washington, D.C., couple who decided during the wait to get married. But when the lifts were temporarily shut down because of the climber, stranding the couple and others at the top, Khan decided to spring his surprise. “I figured we might be here longer than I imagined," Khan told the AP reporter. "So I didn’t want to miss dinner and she always wanted to be proposed to on or under the Eiffel Tower. Besides, when trapped at the top of a 1,083-foot (330-meter) tower, how can anyone say “No?”Had that happened, “somebody else would be climbing the Eiffel Tower today possibly,” she joked.

A video with two clips, one showing a large building collapsing after being hit by rockets and one showing damage at street level, shows Israeli airstrikes on the Palestinian enclave of Gaza in May 2021. It has been falsely captioned as showing Oct. 7, 2023 strikes. The two clips shared in the compilation posted on social media can be seen in a May 2021 post by ABC News showing an Israeli airstrike hitting the 14-storey Al-Shorouk tower block in Gaza and its aftermath. The first clip was originally posted on Instagram on May 12, 2021, and has been previously miscaptioned as showing the conflict in Ukraine. Footage of an Israeli airstrike in 2021 that collapsed Gaza’s Al-Shorouk tower block has been falsely captioned on social media as showing a 2023 response to an attack on its soil from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Gaza’s health ministry said a further 770 people were killed in the retaliatory strikes. But the video is unrelated to the retaliatory strikes. The grille-windows of an adjacent building are visible in a photo hosted on Getty Images which shows an aerial view of Al-Shorouk tower’s rubble. The video shows an Israeli airstrike destroying Gaza’s Al-Shorouk tower in 2021.

Intel’s Tower deal sidesteps competition snafu
  + stars: | 2023-09-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
On Tuesday, $155 billion chip giant Intel (INTC.O) inked a new partnership with Tower Semiconductor (TSEM.TA), which Intel boss Pat Gelsinger recently gave up on acquiring for $5 billion. The deal will see Tower spend $300 million on equipment at Intel’s New Mexico campus, bolstering Gelsinger’s nascent chip-manufacturing-for-hire services. Intel ended its year-and-a-half-long quest to acquire Tower in August, after failing to win sign-off from Chinese antitrust enforcers. Signed in February 2022, the deal was aimed at strengthening Intel’s pivot into manufacturing chips designed by others by bringing in Tower’s know-how. By signing up Tower as a partner, Gelsinger wins a chunk of its business without the trouble of competition roadblocks.

A man scaled a pillar of the iconic landmark early morning local time, BFMTV reported, citing police sources. The tower was slightly delayed in opening on Thursday morning due to the incident, according to BFMTV. Hong Kong CNN —Intel has pulled out of a major acquisition of an Israeli chipmaker after failing to obtain the required regulatory approval. The US tech giant said in a Wednesday statement it would scrap its planned $5.4 billion purchase of Tower Semiconductor (TSEM), saying it had not received the necessary sign-off from regulators in time. While Intel (INTC) did not specifically mention which jurisdiction it was waiting on, it had previously outlined efforts to clear the deal with authorities in China. Both Intel and Tower said in their respective statements that the deal had been canceled based on mutual agreement. To walk away, Intel will now pay Tower a termination fee of $353 million, the California-based company said in the statement.

The opening of the Eiffel Tower was delayed on Monday morning after security officials found two American tourists sleeping in the monument overnight, officials said. “They were detected in the early morning by the Sete security service, during daily rounds of checks carried out before the monument was opened to the public,” according to the Eiffel Tower’s operator, Sociéte d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, also known as Sete. The Paris prosecutor’s office was informed on Monday morning that two American men had been found sleeping on the site of the Eiffel Tower after entering with tickets on Sunday night, according to a spokeswoman for the office, who said that alcohol was involved. She did not know where in the Eiffel Tower the men were discovered. One of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, the Eiffel Tower was built from 1887 to 1889 to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution and stands at 1,083 feet.

Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Intel (INTC.O) can thank China later. The chipmaker on Wednesday terminated its $5.4 billion acquisition of Tower Semiconductor (TSEM.TA), after failing to secure approval from the country’s State Administration for Market Regulation. Beijing’s trustbusters are providing a helpful escape route from the intensifying technology trade war. Reuters GraphicsAdding Tower would have helped Intel boss Pat Gelsinger with his strategic pivot to making semiconductors designed by others. Tower uses old technology, however, while Intel’s new customers, including the U.S. Department of Defense and Qualcomm, want cutting-edge fabrication.

Pisa, Italy CNN —The Tower of Pisa was once feared on the brink of collapse as the lean that made it such a popular landmark threatened its very existence. Trouble from the startExperts say the future of the tower is secure following remedial work to keep it standing. Earth was extracted from beneath the foundations of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to help reduce its tilt. Thanks to an agreement between Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage and OPA, experts integrate satellite monitoring with data collected at ground level. The progress of these terrestrial and satellite monitoring activities will be presented next year, as part of the series of events scheduled to celebrate the tower’s 850th anniversary.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Protests against China’s restrictive Covid-19 measures appeared to roil in a number of cities Saturday night, in displays of public defiance fanned by anger over a deadly fire in the western Xinjiang region. A protester who gave only his family name, Zhao, said one of his friends was beaten by police and two friends were pepper sprayed. Posts about the protest were deleted immediately on China’s social media, as China’s Communist Party commonly does to suppress criticism. The Associated Press could not independently verify all the videos, but two Urumqi residents who declined to be named out of fear of retribution said large-scale protests occurred Friday night. The AP pinpointed the locations of two of the videos of the protests in different parts of Urumqi.
