Former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum speaks after being named presidential candidate of the ruling Morena party for next year's presidential election in Mexico City on September 6, 2023. Voters in Mexico are participating in the country's largest election ever — casting votes Sunday to fill more than 20,000 local, state and federal positions and almost certainly elect their first female president. But rampant violence has marred the road toward one of the most consequential elections in Mexico's history. Violence against political figures has also persisted throughout this election cycle, resulting in a 150% increase in the number of victims of political violence since 2021, according to an analysis from Integralia, a public affairs consulting firm that researches political risk and other issues in Mexico. These have greatly dismayed Mexican voters, leading most of them to cite security as a top issue of concern.

President Biden regularly emphasizes how the major pieces of legislation he has signed — the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act — expand opportunities for Americans. This is especially true for rural Americans. I am often asked if rural voters will give Mr. Biden credit for all that money and the changes it could bring, and will show their appreciation at the ballot box. My answer is that it is unrealistic to expect place-specific investments to have an immediate impact on elections. Rural places remain skeptical that federal policymakers have their best interests at heart.

Tony Pigg, a silky-voiced disc jockey who rode high during FM radio’s golden era — first supplying extended jams to the psychedelic underground on the seminal San Francisco radio station KSAN in the 1960s and later at the powerhouse rock station WPLJ in New York — died on April 26 at his home in Manhattan. His death was announced by his wife, Lucinda Scala Quinn. Howard Stern recently said on his SiriusXM satellite radio show that he was enamored with Mr. Pigg’s work when he was growing up on Long Island. “He was one of those guys I was really jealous of,” Mr. Stern said. His talent was a major reason why in the 1970s, WPLJ became the most-listened-to FM station in America and is so fondly remembered today.”

Tony Probst’s passion for the Titanic is unwavering. Since the mid-1990s, he has amassed hundreds of artifacts from the ship’s maiden voyage in 1912, including a lifeboat plaque, china, sheet music and an array of personal documents. “I believe I’m the only person on planet Earth who has every piece of paper for one individual to get on board Titanic,” Mr. Probst, 64, said proudly this week. His collection is sometimes on display at the audio and visual store he runs with his sons in the Bay Area of California, but it has also toured prominent spaces, including the National Geographic Museum in Washington; the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif.; and the Titanic museums in Branson, Mo., and Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Greg Sankey, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, is the ultimate soft power player. Instead, he speaks opaquely, often requiring something like a college sports Kremlinologist to interpret his intentions. constitution and scoffing out of existence the possibility that the SEC would be shut out of the football playoff last season. Recently, he teamed up with the Big Ten commissioner, Tony Petitti, to leverage a deal that will award their conferences about 60 percent of the television revenue for the 12-team College Football Playoff that begins next year, leaving crumbs for everyone else. So, when Sankey told ESPN this month that it was time to rethink the N.C.A.A.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Tony Perkins’ layup with 1.3 seconds left gave Iowa an 88-86 overtime win over No. Perkins, who had 16 of his 18 points in the second half and overtime, drove the right side of the lane, nearly losing the ball before recovering to hit the winning shot. Iowa built a nine-point lead on two occasions in the second half, then the Hawkeyes went almost six minutes without a field goal. Both teams had chances to win the game in the closing seconds of the second half. Iowa wore down in the second half — Perkins and Freeman played the entire half — as the Badgers rallied.

Purdue maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half before Iowa got to within 78-70 with 4:22 left. In broad terms, the S & P 500 could retreat to 4600 or so – about 4% down from here – and still be in a routine technical check-back to its latest launch point in early December. But there’s not going to be a post-Trump religious right — at least, not anytime soon. The loudest investor chatter for months has insisted the heavyweights of the Nasdaq have been everything to the market in 2023. Sunday is the second anniversary of the all-time closing high in both the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 indexes, which remain 12% and 4 % underwater even after their monster gains in recent months. It's relatively rare for the Nasdaq 100 – the most easily investable part of the Nasdaq and the one most reflective of the mega-cap dominance – to enter a two-year downturn. Only three of the Big Seven have outperformed the Nasdaq 100 over the past two years – Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft — while Meta Platforms has kept pace and Amazon, Alphabet and Tesla have lagged. Friday showed signs of outright rotation, the Russell 2000 up 1.3% versus a flat Nasdaq 100.

Tony Petitti had a front-row seat to what had been the biggest sign-stealing scandal in American sports history. He was Major League Baseball’s deputy commissioner in late 2019, when his boss, Rob Manfred, began investigating the Houston Astros’ now infamous trash-can banging scheme. From his spot within the game’s inner circle, Petitti saw up close how Manfred’s probe unfolded, how he decided to impose discipline and how the public ultimately reacted afterward.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — No. 9 Penn State on Saturday, a monster matchup with Big Ten and national championship implications, with a major question mark. Penn State will be the first ranked team Michigan has faced. After Penn State, the Wolverines are at Maryland before the traditional regular-season finale against heated rival Ohio State. The Big Ten's penalty would allow Harbaugh to return for the Big Ten championship game and the playoff, if Michigan makes it.

CNN —University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the three remaining games of the 2023 regular season after the Big Ten Conference announced on Friday the Wolverines football program was found to have conducted “an impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years,” thus violating the Big Ten sportsmanship policy. “I want to thank coach Harbaugh,” Moore told the Fox broadcast with tears streaming down his face. The Big Ten Conference said Jim Harbaugh's suspension from coaching on game days was "not a sanction" of the coach. “This is not a sanction of Coach Harbaugh,” it read. “You may have removed him from our sidelines today, but Jim Harbaugh is our head football coach.

The football program with the most wins in college football history is prepared to take possible legal action and seek a court order against any punishment handed down by the conference. The case has shadowed the Wolverines and the College Football Playoff discussion for nearly three weeks. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because Michigan is not discussing its strategy publicly, and did not provide details of its potential next moves. Michigan and the Big Ten have both confirmed the school was notified of potential discipline from the conference. The NCAA is investigating Michigan, too, but its process is slower and is likely to stretch well past the season. Former Michigan star and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard said in an email response to AP such a situation wouldn't happen in the Southeastern Conference. Michigan could seek a court order from a judge that would put any punishment from the Big Ten on hold.

Connor Stalions, the low-level Michigan football staffer at the center of the probe into impermissible scouting and sign stealing, resigned Friday. The Big Ten, according to Ono, has not begun an investigation regarding the allegations. Big Ten bylaws provide a path for the commissioner to potentially act more swiftly in matters of sportsmanship and competitive integrity.
