Liverpool's Konate, Thiago out for Villa match - Klopp
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Sept 1 (Reuters) - Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate and Thiago will miss this weekend's Premier League game at home to Aston Villa due to injuries, manager Juergen Klopp said, while giving little away on the club's possible transfer activity on Friday's deadline day. France centre back Konate is battling a muscle issue and missed last weekend's comeback win over Newcastle United, while Brazil midfielder Thiago underwent hip surgery before the start of the season and has suffered a setback in his recovery. "Ibou (Konate) will not be ready for the game," Klopp said. Thiago started training with the team and then had a little setback, so we have to slow down there a little bit. Liverpool are third in the league with seven points from three games, one point above Villa in seventh place.

Salah has scored 187 goals in 307 appearances since joining Liverpool in 2017, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League. Brazil clears bottlenecks to oust US as top corn exporter

"We celebrated a lot... when (corn export) volumes via northern ports equaled Santos," said Sergio Mendes, head of Brazilian grain exporter group Anec. "By using northern ports... you are saving 20 reais ($4.12) per ton (of corn)." Treemap with data from Cargonave show the percentage share of corn exports of Brazil ports in north and south part of the country. CHEAPER ROUTE TO CHINAThe new export capacity has helped grains shipped from Brazil's northern ports to compete on logistics costs with U.S. farmers. "The greater share of shipments through northern ports reflects cheaper freight costs compared to routes to the ports in the south and southeast," said Thome Guth, a Conab official.

After six seasons in the Champions League, where Klopp's side reached the final three times and won the trophy in 2019, Liverpool now find themselves back in the Europa League. Premier League clubs sacked 14 managers last season but Klopp, currently the longest-serving coach at a single club in England's top flight, was never in danger of losing his job. Liverpool did not inject fresh blood into an ageing midfield while injuries in the forward line scuppered a title challenge. This year Saudi Arabian clubs have forced Liverpool's hand, with the cash-rich league tearing up the Anfield club's transition plans by luring away their two midfield stalwarts. Returning to the Champions League will be their first priority, which is why a top four finish -- or even winning the Europa League -- will be the bare minimum that is expected of Liverpool.

Medvedev revved up for deep run after F1 trip

LONDON, July 7 (Reuters) - Russian Daniil Medvedev said he revved himself up for Wimbledon by watching the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix in Barcelona after a disappointing early exit at the French Open. "I can either say next day I'm going to practise already full and try to prepare the next tournament, or I take some days off. In the often insular world of tennis, Medvedev said seeing another sporting perspective had been useful. Then I was like, okay, let's go back to practise, try to prepare well Wimbledon. Medvedev took a while to get up to speed in his first-round match against British wildcard Arthur Fery but was impressive in a 6-3 6-3 7-6(5) win over the dangerous Mannarino, completing the victory after bad light interrupted his charge on Thursday.

In a normal match I would have won 6-3 6-2, but here you have the chance to fight like he did. Up next for Andreeva is 19-year-old Coco Gauff - a player who knows all about negotiating instant stardom, with last year's runner-up having subdued Julia Grabher 6-2 6-3 to set up the third-round showdown. American Kayla Day made no secret of her success after a stunning 6-2 4-6 6-4 win over compatriot Madison Keys, thanking her Czech roots for enhancing her tennis skills. Next for the 22nd seed is American 12th seed Frances Tiafoe, who beat Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-2. 2 Daniil Medvedev was knocked out by Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round on Tuesday. Playing on this court against this kind of player and beating him is a dream come true,” Seyboth Wild, 23, said during his on-court interview. After winning match point with another crushing forehand, the beaming Brazilian turned to the crowd in disbelief, before raising his arms aloft. I started cramping in the second set. I did my best and tried to play my best tennis and it worked,” Seyboth Wild said.

CEO Brian Chesky told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" Wednesday that Airbnb is being cautious about its second quarter because of affordability pressure it is experiencing in North America. Shares of Airbnb tumbled 10% Wednesday, a day after the company released its first-quarter report that offered slightly weaker-than-expected guidance and a cautious outlook for the current quarter. In its first quarter, Airbnb beat analyst estimates on top and bottom lines, and total revenue rose 20% year over year. Analysts at Bernstein said the company posted a "solid enough" quarter despite the challenges it is anticipating in its second quarter.
Top-four finish not in Liverpool's hands, says Klopp
  + stars: | 2023-05-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
"Other teams are in much better positions, as long as they win games we have no chance," Klopp told reporters ahead of Saturday's clash against ninth-placed Brentford. We have 59 points and United has 63, so we can get 71 maximum (at the end of the season). The way they played over this season, the top four teams, no one looks like losing more games than they win, Klopp said. James Milner is expected to leave Liverpool after eight years at the end of the season and Klopp described how highly he valued the 37-year-old midfielder. Klopp said Diogo Jota and captain Jordan Henderson will be assessed ahead of the match while Roberto Firmino remains sidelined.
May 3 (Reuters) - Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara will miss the remainder of the season to undergo a minor operation for a hip issue, British media reported on Tuesday. The Spaniard has played 28 times for Liverpool in all competitions this season and only recently returned to action after two months out with a hip flexor problem. Alcantara is set to miss Premier League games against Fulham, Brentford, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Southampton as they push for a top-four finish. LONDON, April 26 (Reuters) - A bullet header from Joel Matip gave Liverpool a 2-1 Premier League win over West Ham United that moved them above Tottenham Hotspur and back into the European places after a frenetic end-to-end game at the London Stadium on Wednesday. After having a shot blocked a minute earlier, Matip got the winner in the 67th minute when he powered home a close-range header from Andy Robertson's corner. "When a player lunges in the box, it's different from a slip, it's different from trying to break your fall. When you lunge in the box, your arms out, it was a penalty kick," he told BT Sport. The loss brought an end to a run that saw West Ham take seven points from three games and dropped them one spot to 14th, five points ahead of Leicester City in 18th place.
REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationApril 24 (Reuters) - A quarter into record layoffs, investors in U.S. tech giants will scrutinize if the cost cuts boosted profits to their satisfaction, while the companies emphasize how artificial intelligence will be their next growth driver. Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), Google parent Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), Instagram owner Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) all report quarterly results this week. From a year earlier, profit is expected to slump nearly 16%, on average, with Microsoft expected to perform the least poorly with a 0.5% slip. These three companies, along with Amazon, said between November and March they would slash 70,000 jobs in a rapidly weakening economy, following a pandemic-led hiring boom. "There are expectations that companies could create or do even more with AI ... every tech investor is expecting those companies to be in the frontier."

Potapova upsets Gauff in third-round Miami thriller

March 25 (Reuters) - Russian Anastasia Potapova produced some of her best tennis to upset American Coco Gauff 6-7(8) 7-5 6-2 in a third-round thriller at the Miami Open on Saturday. "I had this belief in me that I can do this, that I just wanted to fight through and just to show my best tennis and not focus on the score," she told the Tennis Channel. Up 5-2 in the first set, it looked as though it might be an easy day for Potapova. But world number six Gauff turned the tables when she converted break point chances in the ninth and 11th games and closed the tiebreak with a lethal backhand. She failed to earn a single break point as Potapova dropped only one first-serve point and won the final five games.
