There are currently some "micro pockets" of deflation in the U.S. economy, said Joe Seydl, a senior markets economist at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Why prices are deflating for goodsConsumers have largely seen prices deflate for physical goods, such as cars, furniture and appliances, economists said. For example, households have seen prices for furniture and bedding fall by 3.7% since May 2023, according to the consumer price index. watch nowThe U.S. dollar's strength relative to other global currencies has also helped rein in prices for goods, economists said. Travelers have also seen deflation for airline fares (-5.9%), hotels (-1.7%) and car rentals (-8.8%) since May 2023.

AdvertisementPlus, I'm not convinced that Frontier and Spirit's recent addition of "premium" perks will give either a competitive edge. Frontier and Spirit offer 28 inches of pitch, while coach seats on all three mainline carriers start at 30 inches. AdvertisementAmerican Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines recognized the budget competition years ago and created their own version of a cheap ticket: basic economy. ULCCs are not always cheaper once you do the mathIn my experience, mainline tickets are sometimes cheaper than Frontier or Spirit. Spirit has dropped all change and cancel fees, and Frontier is adding business-class-like seats to lure in more premium travelers.

A federal judge temporarily barred notorious "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli from streaming or disseminating copies of a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album he had forfeited as part of his criminal fraud conviction in 2017. Steven Cooper, a lawyer for PleasrDAO, said Wednesday that he could not comment on whether he has been in touch with prosecutors on Shkreli's alleged violation of his forfeiture order. Shkreli bought the Wu-Tang Clan album in 2015 for $2 million, setting a Guinness world record for the most expensive musical work ever sold. The 31-track, two-disc Wu-Tang Clan album, came in a hand-carved, nickel-and-silver-cased box set, which itself was nestled in a larger leather box. At the time of the sale, Shkreli owed almost $2.4 million on the forfeiture order.

Massimo Pinca | ReutersDETROIT – Since spearheading a merger to create Stellantis in 2021, CEO Carlos Tavares has been on a cost-cutting mission. "We are not in the race to transition to EVs, but in a race to cut cost on EVs," Tavares said in late May during a Bernstein investor conference. The cuts are part of Stellantis' strategic plan to increase profits and double revenue to 300 billion euros by 2030. Executives on Thursday will outline developments across Stellantis' regions and businesses, including its capital and operational disciplines, according to Stellantis CFO Natalie Knight. "The share price reaction to the [capital markets day] will likely be driven by how these short-term concerns are addressed.

Cryptocurrencies slumped on Tuesday as bitcoin extended its recent slide and investors awaited the Federal Reserve's next rate decision. Bitcoin losses may have been triggered by a wave of long liquidations, which forces traders to sell their assets at market price to settle their debts. In the past 24 hours, $56 million in long bitcoin liquidations have occurred across centralized exchanges, according to CoinGlass. The market saw another $56 million in long bitcoin liquidations on Thursday, ahead of a better-than-expected May U.S. jobs report Friday. Bitcoin fell back under $70,000 after briefly testing the level to begin the month.

But you can get one of the chain's best deals without ever setting foot in the store. That's because Costco loyalists know there's no better place to buy gasoline than at the wholesale giant's pumps, which regularly undercut the competition. Costco said in its report that it believes its gasoline business "enhances traffic in our warehouses." Even if you're not a Costco shopper, the savings on gasoline alone can make the price of a $60 membership worthwhile. Using a little back of the envelope math, David and Susan conservatively estimate that a member would only need to drive 7,500 miles per year while exclusively buying Costco gas before their membership pays for itself.

Experts say that this previously overlooked gemstone is rocketing in desirability and value, as collectors look beyond the so-called “Big Four’” (diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires) for more affordable, niche gemstones that may just be a shrewd investment. “Spinels and Paraiba tourmalines have seen a steady increase in demand over the last decade.”Boghossian's paraiba and diamond set features paraibas and fancy yellow diamonds. Experts posit that only one Paraiba tourmaline is mined for every 10,000 diamonds — and while similar hues are found in Madagascar, the scarcity of Brazilian stones has seen prices soar. At Bonhams, Tonkin said prices for top-quality Paraiba tourmalines reached $75,000 per carat in 2022, compared with $4,800 per carat in 2009. “These incredibly vibrant, clean gemstones really stirred something in me,” she explained in an email.

After four years of Donald Trump, Joe Biden was supposed to restore the United States to a position of global leadership. Yet there is more to global leadership than backing friends and beating back foes. After decades of dubious warmaking, the United States would become the global good guy again, uniting the world to resist the Kremlin’s blatant affront to law and order. The United States now must contend with an aggrieved and unpredictable nuclear peer in Moscow. The United States is not outmatched, exactly.

Opinion | The Israeli Hostage Rescue, and the Cost

To the Editor:Re “Israel’s Rescue Euphoria Fades as Troubles Linger” (news analysis, front page, June 10):I think the article misses the point. Yes, only four hostages were freed as a result of Israel’s military operation. Yet the message to Hamas and those Palestinian civilians who are hiding Israeli hostages is clear: Israel will act to free those hostages, regardless of the cost. The way to avoid such hazards, however, is clear: Hamas should free the hostages — all of them. If your children were being held hostage by a terrorist organization, would you be concerned about world opinion — yet alone show restraint?

CNN —Ukraine’s military on Sunday said it had destroyed one of Russia’s newest and most advanced fighter jets in a drone strike on a military base deep inside Russia. Ukrainian forces said they successfully destroyed one of Russia's most advanced combat jets, SU-57, in a drone strike on a military base deep inside Russia. Flight Global’s “World Air Forces 2024” directory lists 14 Su-57s as active and another 62 as on order. TASS reported in 2022 that Russian forces will receive a total of 22 Su-57s by the end of this year. If the reports of the Ukrainian drone strike deep inside Russia prove true, it marks another success of Kyiv’s low-cost drones taking out high-value Russian assets.

Rodrigo Garrido | ReutersThe euphoria over nuclear energy as a power source for data centers is "overblown," the CEO of a major power provider for large tech companies told CNBC in an interview Monday. Nuclear power, on the other hand, faces challenges in meeting the growing power demand from data centers, Gluski said. Gluski said the "euphoria" over nuclear power is a "little overblown." There is only so much existing nuclear energy that merchant power providers can re-contract to sites such as data centers, the CEO said. "The Street got ahead of it saying you're not going to build renewables, it's all going be nuclear," Gluski said.
