Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) speaks during a "Politics & Eggs" event at the New Hampshire Institute Politics at St. Anselm College on January 12, 2024 in Manchester, New Hampshire. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced Friday that he is not running for president after spending months mulling a bid that would have shaken up the 2024 campaign. I will not be involved in a presidential run," Manchin said during a speech. In a statement following Manchin's announcement, former Connecticut Sen. Joe Liberman, former North Carolina Gov. Democrats feared a Manchin candidacy would have pulled votes away from President Joe Biden and boost former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican frontrunner, in a general election.

Even among all Americans, Trump seems to be doing better. Instead of leading many voters to distrust Trump, the legal cases are leading voters to distrust the legal system. It’s important for the public to feel that the Trump prosecutions are legitimate. For many Americans, all of these distortions validate their sense that the Trump prosecutions are partisan. As they erode public trust, public officials solidify Trump’s support.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The state of Maine's long-cherished reputation for political independence is being threatened by the nation's polarized politics, with more and more of its voters feeling pressured to take sides. So-called independents, or unenrolled voters, have gone from the state's largest voting bloc to trailing both major parties in just four years. Republicans, too, overtook unenrolled voters two years later. As of last month, a tally of active voters indicated there were 343,488 Democratic voters, 279,936 Republican voters and 273,298 unenrolled voters. The economist served in the Maine Senate as an independent, and remains active on political issues.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Another attempt to enshrine abortion rights in the New Hampshire Constitution failed Thursday, this time in the Senate. State law prohibits abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy except when the mother’s health or life is in danger or there is a fatal fetal anomaly. The Republican-led House earlier this month voted 193-184 in favor of a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights up to that threshold, short of the three-fifths majority needed to advance the proposal. Changes can be made to the state constitution if three-fifths of the Legislature agrees to put the question to voters, who must then approve amendments by at least a two-thirds majority. “This Legislature has been crystal clear and consistent when it comes to abortion rights,” he said.

A Super Bowl advertisement promoting the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a remake of a 1960 spot that helped put his uncle John F. Kennedy in the White House — has struck a nerve with Kennedy family members and friends, who worry that it exploits and potentially tarnishes the legacy of a storied political family. The 30-second advertisement is built on the foundation of one of the most famous political ads in American history, still memorable to many in politics 63 years after it was first shown. That historic ad presents John F. Kennedy — than a senator from Massachusetts — as a young, vibrant and experienced challenger to Richard M. Nixon, the Republican vice president under Dwight D. Eisenhower. The slightly altered version of the original ad superimposes pictures of Robert Kennedy Jr. over John F. Kennedy’s image and keeps the jaunty jingle — Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy — that remains burned in some people’s memories to this day. In the process, it repurposes an advertisement created for John F. Kennedy into one for his 70-year-old nephew, an appropriation of a legacy that many Democrats have long argued Robert Kennedy should not be able to claim.

“The RNC MUST be a good partner in the presidential election,” Mr. Trump wrote in his statement. “Lara is an extremely talented communicator and is dedicated to all that MAGA stands for,” Mr. Trump said of his daughter-in-law, who is married to his middle son, Eric. The Times had previously reported that Mr. Trump wanted Mr. Whatley — a supporter of his false claims about widespread voter fraud — as the next R.N.C. Trump’s advisers insist that doesn’t mean he’s taking South Carolina for granted. But we see this as a done deal,” a senior Trump adviser told CNN, referring specifically to South Carolina. Carolyn Kaster/AP/FileUS national security officials have to weigh whether publicly calling attention to disinformation might inadvertently amplify the very message they’re trying to bat down. In both scenarios, federal officials favored a muted public response, largely choosing to let state and local governments take the lead. State and local officials run elections and are more trusted voices in their communities, but how can federal officials act decisively to support them? “It’s a trick box,” said Adam Hickey, who worked on election security issues for the Justice Department’s National Security Division. “[W]e prioritize tabletop exercises that integrate the range of cyber, physical, and operational threats election officials may encounter,” Conley said in a statement to CNN.

How damaging are all the renewed questions about age and mental acuity going to be? One Democratic member of the House responded to being told of the questions about age and memory raised in the report with a morbid laugh and sullen shake of the head. Inside the White House and among Biden’s reelection campaign staff, the tension is constant. Biden aides also feel themselves that this hasn’t been enough. Most importantly, they reflect what Biden aides have learned from experience: Nothing combats questions about the president’s competence as much as people seeing him in action.

The court scheduled 80 minutes for the arguments that will kick off shortly after 10 a.m. Though the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, the court has never before wrestled with a claim based on the insurrection clause. The case, Trump v. Anderson, is on appeal from the Colorado Supreme Court, which in December ruled that the former president is no longer eligible to serve. Trump is simultaneously juggling four criminal prosecutions – including one that could reach the Supreme Court in coming days dealing with whether he can claim immunity from criminal prosecution. CNN —A robocall that used an AI voice resembling President Joe Biden’s to advise New Hampshire voters against voting in the state’s presidential primary has been linked to a pair of Texas-based telecommunications companies, the state’s attorney general announced on Tuesday. Remember I used to say: ‘Don’t do it, but if you do it, keep the oil.’”Facts First: Trump’s claim that he said “Don’t do it” is false; the claim was debunked eight years ago. In reality, Trump did not publicly express opposition to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq before it occurred. In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Trump argued a military strike on Iraq might be necessary; when radio host Howard Stern asked Trump in September 2002 whether he is “for invading Iraq,” Trump responded, “Yeah, I guess so. CNN —South Carolina, the state that launched Joe Biden to the Democratic nomination four years ago, is set Saturday to deliver the president his first official primary victory of the 2024 campaign. Fifty-five delegates are at stake in Saturday’s primary in South Carolina. This year marks the first time South Carolina has appeared at the front of the official Democratic nominating calendar — a change made largely due to Biden’s urging. Biden stands as the overwhelming favorite to win the South Carolina primary against comparatively weak opposition: U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and Marianne Williamson, an author who ran unsuccessfully in 2020. In drawing up the official primary calendar, Democratic officials put South Carolina first. Biden hopes to win South Carolina by a whopping margin, which might infuse his candidacy with more energy and help deflect attention from his low standing in public opinion polls. A total of 55 delegates are at stake Saturday in South Carolina. South Carolina Democrats want a huge turnout to justify the party's decision to bump the state to the front of the line.

South Carolina's primary was the first official nominating contest for Democrats, who – egged on by Biden – moved the state up in the primary schedule. But buoyed by Black voters – especially Black women – Biden earned nearly half of the primary vote in South Carolina in a five-way race, propelling him ultimately to the Democratic nomination. Despite the expected primary victory in South Carolina, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made a concerted effort to campaign there, visiting the Palmetto State the last two weekends. Harris also visited South Carolina three times since the beginning of the year, speaking at college campuses about student debt relief and abortion rights. Further, 76.5% of the early vote was made up of Black voters, 13% higher than in 2020, he added.

He fought hard in state after state, even as the front-runner amassed a delegate advantage that would be virtually impossible to overcome. Haley decided to skip Nevada’s presidential caucuses next Thursday in favor of a state primary election two days earlier that does not award delegates. Trump could embarrass Haley in her home state of South Carolina later in the month, where the former president has a loyal following. In New Hampshire's recent primary, for example, Trump won a decisive victory against Haley backed by his popularity among traditional Republican voters. The Haley campaign has already rolled out leadership teams and “Women for Nikki” chapters in all 15 Super Tuesday states.

The Biden reelection campaign is rejecting the political organizing model that Obama used during his campaign for a second term in 2012, in which Obama largely shunned the Democratic National Committee and opted instead to set up his own vast electioneering machine. Several top DNC officials at the time complained that they were ignored by Obama, while state parties complained they were starved for resources. “One of the big challenges in 2012 was a national competition and rub between (Organizing For Action) and the state parties. And they donated roughly $110,000 to the campaigns of state and federal elected officials who had endorsed Mr. DeSantis.
