U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. expects further attacks on its forces in the Middle East, following the recent series of drone incursions in Syria and Iraq and the interception of missiles and drones by a U.S. missile-guided destroyer in the Red Sea.
“In fact, we expect that there's a likelihood of escalation, escalation by Iranian proxies directed against our forces, directed against our personnel,” Blinken said Sunday on NBC’s Meet The Press.
Blinken expanded on what he said were U.S. efforts to deter Iran or others entering the conflict, with two carrier strike groups, missile defense systems and other resources in the area or being sent to the region.
“We don't want to see a second or third front develop,” he said.
His comments followed similar concerns expressed earlier Sunday by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
