During the summer of 2022, I was lucky enough to visit the home of the comics artist couple Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Robert Crumb in a remote town in the south of France. Kominsky-Crumb, in good health at the time of our meeting, died of pancreatic cancer less than six months later. She was, with apologies to Crumb, the more personable of the two. Which brings us to this, Crumb’s touching tribute to his wife in the form of a yoga mat, with art based on an old flier he’d made for one of Kominsky-Crumb’s classes. It’s not something Crumb himself would ever use, but it’s the contrast in their personalities that makes their work so captivating.

The film had its beginnings in 2015, the same year the book was published, and is that rarest of Hollywood literary makeovers. For Stevenson, much of the book spoke to his own upbringing and experiences. Stevenson, 31, was born and raised in Columbia, S.C., the middle child of five siblings. After years of home-schooling and two more at the local high school, he went to the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he began posting Nimona comics online in 2012, a project that became his senior thesis. “When I first started making the comic, I didn’t consider myself a writer,” he said.

In 2013, a photographer convinced the cartoonist to don a Captain America costume for a shoot on the streets of New York. Something about a Sikh Captain America seemed to resonate with people. He wants others to see Sikh Captain America as just AmericanIn summer 2011, Singh saw a promotional poster for “Captain America: The First Avenger” that sparked an idea. “I never fathomed that a 10-year-old White kid would connect to a turban and bearded Captain America,” Singh said. Singh’s Sikh Captain America subverted typical ideas of patriotism – instead of fighting Nazi agent Red Skull and other members of the Axis Powers, Sikh Captain America would fight hate crimes and intolerance in the US.

And there’s one thing some fans are particularly excited about: Gwen Stacy – a Spider superhero in an alternative universe – might be transgender. “Trans (and even cis) fans have every right to say Gwen Stacy is trans, even if the movies never outright confirm it. But whether Gwen Stacy is actually trans isn’t the most important part, Tunnell said. The first movie, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” was praised at the time of its release for highlighting minority cultures. A third “Spider-Verse” film, “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” is set to be released next year.

He is an LGBTQ rights advocate who has been featured in both “Marvel’s Voices: Pride” and DC Comics’s “DC Pride” anthology and the creator of the character Sereno. CNN —Something magic happens when a kid connects with superhero comics. I grew up as a closeted queer kid in self-denial, in a cultural context with scarce representation and acceptance. That’s when the opportunity arose to manifest Sereno, my own creator-owned superhero for the local Argentinian scene. Elon Musk tweeted that George Soros reminds him of the "X-Men" mutant Magneto. Musk also claimed without substantiation that Soros "hates humanity." His tweet on Monday, which offered no context for his comparison, simply stated: "Soros reminds me of Magneto." Soros hates humanity." Representatives of Musk and Soros did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.
While Musk’s remarks don’t mention the billionaire philanthropist’s ethnicity, Musk was criticized for dangerous rhetoric that could potentially fuel further attacks on Soros. When a Twitter user defended Soros as having good intentions which are criticized by those who disagree with his politics, Musk responded, “You assume they are good intentions. Attacks on Soros have increased in recent years alongside a broader increase in incidents of antisemitic attacks. Studies by the ADL and the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that the volume of hate speech on Twitter has grown dramatically under Musk’s stewardship. He most recently sold 22 million shares in December.
In the Vanguards Universe, heroes come together as humankind’s first line of defense, protecting the people of Lagos from members of the first race seeking to punish them. Since its inception 10 years ago, Comic Republic has created and conceptualized dozens of comic book characters and stories. Through his studio, Mad Massive Entertainment, Hinds will work with UCP and the Comic Republic team to execute the production. “I’ve always wanted to show that you can provide quality output out of Africa, because at the time we started, there wasn’t any such thing coming out of the continent,” said the Comic Republic CEO. He added that Comic Republic is well-suited for this deal because the company has worked hard over the past 10 years to build an interconnected superhero universe in its comics.

Before “Heartstopper” became a global phenomenon, it was a web comic, published online by the author, Alice Oseman, a few pages at a time. Oseman, 28, began the webcomic in 2016 just after finishing college, and she was the creator, writer and an executive producer of the Netflix series. The main story between Nick and Charlie remains largely unchanged, she said; much of the new material in the Netflix series came from expanding the supporting characters. Rugby scenes were also tricky to film – in the book and on the show, Nick is a rugby player and Charlie joins the team. While filming, she was part of an enormous team, and spent 11-hour days on location in Paris and at a school in Slough, England.
A New York City house with Spider-Man's address is for sale for $2.1 million. With 4 beds and 3.5 baths, it's a far shot from Peter Parker's working class upbringing in the comics. 20 Ingram Street in Forest Hills, Queens — the home of the fictional family of Spidey, Aunt May, and Uncle Ben — is currently listed on StreetEasy. "As soon as the comic book identified 20 Ingram as the Spider-Man house, they became flooded," Gigi Malek, the realtor who listed the house, told ABC 7. Now, the home is ready for new owners to take on the task of fielding Spider-Man's mail.
On Twitter, Gunn later shared the comics that are acting as the inspiration for the films. Gunn shared some of the comics inspiring his new DC film universe. The future of the DC universe is looking more clear based on the stories Gunn shared, and it suggests a departure from the scattershot nature of the previous DC and Warner Bros. regime. The DC Extended Universe, as it was called prior to Gunn and Safran, tried to build a connected cinematic universe. Gunn and Safran's DC universe will likely play with different tones and styles, as well, based on the stories Gunn shared — but under a unified creative direction.

"It was a complete whirlwind, and it felt too good to be true," Morrison told Insider. "Everyone is given a calendar reminder of when they have to submit a review," one former employee told Insider. Durlston told Insider she wasn't a credible source given the acrimonious nature of her departure from Durlston. "Everyone gets pretty loose at these events," a former employee told Insider, noting the availability of alcohol throughout the day. Bahram told Insider this was not a prohibition but merely a suggestion that it would not be an appropriate arrangement.
Comedian Freddie Roman, the former dean of The Friars Club and a staple of the Catskills comedy scene, has died. Roman died Saturday afternoon at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida, his booking agent and friend Alison Chaplin said Sunday. His uncle and grandfather owned the Crystal Spring Hotel in the Catskills, where Roman started emceeing at age 15. Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers about “The Walking Dead” series finale, “Rest in Peace,” which premiered November 20. CNN —Forgive AMC, at least a little bit, for almost drunkenly celebrating “The Walking Dead” in its heyday by feeding audiences as much content related to the zombie drama as they possibly could. In its early seasons, “The Walking Dead” excelled in part because of its unpredictability, as the montage of characters who had died reminded the audience. Those plans later morphed into a limited series, but the sense that “The Walking Dead” was no longer the priority in AMC’s “Dead” universe had been pretty well cemented. Television is always hungry for another hit, and at its height “The Walking Dead” was the TV equivalent of a supernova.

CNN —“Black Adam” features a protagonist of almost unlimited power, which only makes its puny script more conspicuous. There’s simply no getting around the clunkiness of the dialogue, or the sense “Black Adam” overestimates the character’s appeal. Times being what they are, playing an actual superhero represents an inevitable addition to Johnson’s action resume, and “Black Adam” (setting aside “DC’s League of Super-Pets”) checks off that box. “Black Adam” premieres October 21 in US theaters and is rated PG-13. DC and Warner Bros., which is distributing the movie, are units of Warner Bros.
Author Alan Moore thinks adults liking superhero movies can be a "precursor to fascism." Moore is known for comic books like "Watchmen" and "V for Vendetta," but is "done with comics." Moore, who has expressed his disdain for superhero movies for years, told The Guardian in a recent interview that he thinks adults who like them can be a "precursor for fascism." "Because that kind of infantilisation — that urge towards simpler times, simpler realities — that can very often be a precursor to fascism." He used the popularity of superhero movies and the election of Donald Trump as examples.
CNN —Flexing different muscles, Marvel’s “Werewolf by Night” is a nifty Halloween-timed special designed as a black-and-white homage to the Universal monster movies of the 1930s and ’40s. A brisk 50-ish minutes, the program assumes a fair amount of comic-book knowledge and hits the ground running, with an assembly of monster hunters brought together to compete for the Bloodstone, a supernatural artifact. He’s pursuing a very different agenda – and thanks to Man-Thing, another Marvel character from the early 1970s, not the only monster unleashed. Seen in that light, in fact, “Werewolf by Night” could be the dawn of an intriguing new day. “Werewolf by Night” premieres October 7 on Disney+.
Netflix has become a major platform for comedians, funding an array of specials and delivering them to its audience of more than 220 million subscribers. Now, the streaming giant is changing how it compensates some of the comics it features, a move that could trim its costs and shift some financial burden to the artists, while giving them more control of their work, people familiar with the situation say.
After the next decade, though, DC characters like Superman and Batman will enter the public domain. In the case of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, they made their first published appearances in 1938, 1939, and 1941, respectively. Therefore:Superman would enter the public domain on Jan. 1, 2034. There are similar cases to DC's future public-domain fightWhile there's no precedent on par with what could transpire from these DC characters being in the public domain, there are similar cases.
