PARIS — Iga Swiatek, the world No. 1, will have to settle for a bronze medal at best in the Olympic tennis tournament after losing to Zheng Qinwen of China. Zheng triumphed 6-2, 7-5, coming back from 0-4 down in the second set after the Pole and four-time French Open champion looked to have started rolling downhill. Even when, at 1-2 down in the first set, she immediately broke Zheng back to love, Swiatek could not sustain the shift in momentum. Swiatek will now face either Donna Vekic of Croatia or Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the bronze medal match, while Zheng will play the other for Olympic gold.

Representative Eli Crane, an Arizona Republican and former Navy SEAL, says he is no conspiracy theorist. But in the weeks since the attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump, he has made the baseless suggestion that the shooting was part of a coordinated campaign by Democrats or shadowy government actors to try to stop the former president from reclaiming the White House. “Not only did they try and bankrupt him, but they tried to put him in prison,” Mr. Crane told Jeff Oravits, a right-wing radio personality in Arizona, last week. “When that didn’t work, they tried to put him in prison for 750 years. And many of us said the next step in this escalation is for them to try and kill him because they can’t — they know they can’t beat him fair and square.”In an appearance on The Glenn Beck Program, Mr. Crane, who traveled to the Pennsylvania rally site where Mr. Trump was shot to conduct his own investigation, said, “I don’t want to be a conspiracy theorist, but at the same time, I don’t want to, you know, rule anything out because I don’t put it past some of the people in our government to do anything necessary to hold on to power.”

This meant he judged the ball from Vekic to be in, and chair umpire Jaume Campistol awarded her the point because Gauff’s follow-up shot had gone into the net. Regarding the overruling of line calls, Case 7 is as follows:“If a chair umpire or line umpire calls ‘Out’ and then corrects the call to good, what is the correct decision? “Decision: The chair umpire must decide if the original ‘Out’ call was a hindrance to either player. Video line calls happen throughout top-level tennis. After the match, Vekic said, “It’s a very tricky situation.

PARIS — The top American tennis player Coco Gauff is out of the Olympic women’s singles under controversial circumstances after a 6-7, 2-6 defeat to Croatia’s Donna Vekic on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros. Afterward, Gauff, who was the flagbearer for Team USA alongside LeBron James, said that she “felt that they called it before I hit. Play continued with Gauff down a break and she fought back in the next Vekic service game, but Vekic saved multiple break points, and ultimately cruised to an impressive victory by breaking Gauff again in the final game. Gilbert Carrasquillo/GC ImagesThe Pennsylvania governor, who is Jewish, has attracted more scrutiny on this issue than other potential running mates. That's despite Shapiro being largely in line with other Democrats when it comes to the baseline policy of US support for Israel. Shapiro has also called Benjamin Netanyahu a "terrible leader," telling NBC News that the Israeli Prime Minister has "driven Israel to an extreme that has been bad for Israel and bad for the stability in the Middle East." At the time, pro-Palestinian protests had swept college campuses across the country, occasionally resulting in chaos and disruption. Paris CNN —LeBron James made his emphatic return to Olympic basketball on Sunday, turning in a dominant performance in a 110-84 win against Serbia, his first contest at the Games since 2012. James’ 21 points, eight rebounds and nine assists helped provide the spark for Team USA throughout the contest. The first half though was all about Kevin Durant, who scored 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting. Edwards finished with 11 points and five rebounds. It appeared to be the turning point that put Team USA on its way to a blowout win after Serbia hung around for much of the first three quarters of the game.

In defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s final in straight sets – a straightforward 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory against one of the sport’s greats – Alcaraz became the first Spaniard to successfully defend his Wimbledon crown, a feat not even Rafael Nadal had managed. American Madison Keys wept on Court One at Wimbledon as a horrifically timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. The challenge stood, and the ball had clipped the line by about 4mm, putting Keys down 15-30. Had there been no challenge from Keys, Paolini would likely have challenged herself, but Keys played the ball back into the court, so the point would have been replayed instead of the American losing it. From 15-30, Paolini brought up a break point, and Keys missed a forehand wide while pivoting through the shot onto her left leg, which gave way. The study, published this month in the journal Pediatric Research, shows that parents’ screen use is associated with increased adolescent screen time – along with problematic social media, video game and mobile phone use. The data revealed that 72.9% of parents said they use screens around their adolescents. “Even if parents think their kids are not paying attention, the data shows one of the biggest predictors of preteen screen use is what their parents do with screens in front of them,” Nagata said. In the US, the surgeon general has called for warning labels on social media apps to mitigate “significant harms” associated with their use. “There’s going to be a lot more guidance for parents to help their children navigate social media,” Nagata said.

"I am disappointed by press reports indicating that you are personally intervening—after numerous meetings with big bank CEOs—to delay and water down the Basel III capital rules," said Warren. Last year, three U.S. banking regulators including the Federal Reserve unveiled the proposed rules, a long-expected regime shift around bank capital and risky activities such as trading and lending. The regulations incorporate new international standards created as a response to the 2008 global financial crisis. In March, Powell told lawmakers that he expected "broad and material changes" to the proposal in the wake of the industry's campaign against the rules. Warren urged Powell to allow a Federal Reserve Board vote on the original, tougher Basel proposal by the end of this month.

No One Told the Cows Not to Lick the Artwork
  + stars: | 2024-06-10 | by ( Thomas Rogers | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
On Sunday morning, Roman Mathis, a farmer on the outskirts of the bucolic Swiss city of Basel, noted with concern that one of his cows was standing in a small wading pool filled with beans that had recently been installed next to his barn. It wasn’t wholly unexpected: Mathis had allowed gallerists and artists to use his property as part of a freewheeling art event called the Basel Social Club. As he stared at the pool, he couldn’t tell if it was it was an artwork or a random piece of detritus, and if he should shoo the animal away. “Some of this art speaks to me, though at a certain point it passes a threshold,” Mathis said, gesturing to black inflatable tubes that had been affixed to his barn’s facade. “But it’s been interesting to go along with it.”

Hallie Biden (L), daughter in-law of U.S. President Joe Biden, arrives to the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building for the trial of Hunter Biden on June 06, 2024 in Wilmington, Delaware. Hallie Biden, the widow of President Joe Biden's late son Beau Biden, testified in federal court Thursday that she became a drug user after the president's surviving son, Hunter Biden, introduced her to crack cocaine. Hallie Biden was romantically involved with Hunter Biden after Beau Biden's death from brain cancer in 2015. Hunter Biden, 54, faces three counts connected to his purchase and possession of the gun despite his drug use. The New York Times reported Wednesday that Republicans have largely kept quiet about Hunter Biden's trial for that reason.

For nearly four years, Republicans have delved into the darkest corners of Hunter Biden’s life, seeking to tie his troubles to his father, President Biden. But as the younger Biden stands trial in Delaware on gun charges, the case’s glaring political contradictions have rendered the G.O.P. It stands to reason: The baseless claim that the Biden Justice Department is running a political persecution of Mr. Trump is somewhat undermined by the department’s prosecution of the president’s son. So beyond the professional provocateurs in Washington and the right-wing media, Republicans have decided to say as little as possible. “I wouldn’t read too much into a lot of people not talking about it right now,” cautioned Representative Kelly Armstrong, Republican of North Dakota, and a leader of the House investigation of Hunter Biden.
