Media Matters was served a double whammy on Monday, after reporting on X's advertising strategy. Elon Musk is now suing the watchdog, and Texas AG Ken Paxton is investigating the group for fraud. The report, published Thursday, triggered an advertiser exodus from X, after which Musk declared that he'd file a "thermonuclear" lawsuit against Media Matters. In a statement to BI, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said X's lawsuit was "frivolous" and "meant to bully X's critics into silence." A Media Matters representative did not immediately respond when asked to comment on Paxton's investigation.

The Texas Senate on Saturday ended deliberations over whether Attorney General Ken Paxton should be removed from office, putting the Republican's historic impeachment trial on the brink of a verdict. Paxton, who did not attend the majority of the two-week trial, was not seen in the chamber as some senators wandered around their desks. If convicted, Paxton would become Texas' first statewide official convicted on impeachment charges in more than 100 years. Leaning into divisions among Republicans, Buzbee portrayed the impeachment as a plot orchestrated by an old guard of GOP rivals. The verdict will be decided by 30 of the 31 state senators, most of them Republicans.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Closing arguments were set for Friday in Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's impeachment trial that has pushed the embattled Republican to the brink of removal over charges of corruption and bribery. A verdict from the Texas Senate could arrive as soon as Friday. It is unclear how quickly the state Senate could reach a verdict, but Republican Lt. Gov. Paxton's impeachment trial has focused on the testimony of his former staff, including a group of senior deputies who reported the attorney general to the FBI in 2020, accusing him of breaking the law to help Paul. If convicted, Paxton would become Texas' first statewide official convicted on impeachment charges in more than 100 years.

REUTERS/Elizabeth Frantz/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 15 (Reuters) - Closing arguments were set for Friday in the impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, following eight days of testimony from whistle blowers alleging corruption and defenders saying he did nothing wrong. Paxton, a conservative Republican firebrand who is strongly aligned with former U.S. President Donald Trump, faces 16 articles of impeachment in the trial, in which the Republican-dominated Texas Senate serves as the jury. It is the first impeachment proceeding against a statewide office holder in Texas in over a century. As attorney general, Paxton backed powerful oil and gas interests and pursued restrictions on abortion and transgender rights. He has led Republican state opposition to the policies of Democratic presidents, and filed an unsuccessful lawsuit seeking to overturn Trump's 2020 election defeat.

A federal judge in Texas again ruled unlawful on Wednesday a program that has shielded hundreds of thousands of undocumented young adults from deportation and allowed them to legally work in the United States, rejecting a new rule that the Biden administration had introduced to address the court’s concerns. The judge, Andrew S. Hanen of the Federal District Court in Houston, maintained that President Barack Obama exceeded his authority when he created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, by executive action in 2012. The decision is the latest twist in a five-year-long court saga that has left the program and its beneficiaries, known as Dreamers, hanging in the balance. While the ruling is a blow to the immigrants, the judge did not mandate an immediate end to the program. “There are no material differences between the two programs,” the judge wrote in his 40-page opinion, adding that his decision did not compel the government to “take any immigration, deportation or criminal action against any DACA recipient.”

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton 's impeachment trial on abuse of power charges could be in the hands of the jury as soon as this week, the presiding officer said Monday. Paxton, who has pleaded not guilty, was again not in the Texas Senate for the testimony. The jury is the Republican-controlled state Senate, where Paxton was once a senator before becoming attorney general in 2015 and still has conservative allies. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is underway with live television coverage, a former aide who reported him to the FBI on the witness stand and his wife watching from her desk in the state Senate but prohibited from participating. But how much Paxton himself will take part in the historic trial that resumes Wednesday is up in the air. Paxton pleaded not guilty Tuesday but did not return for opening arguments, when his attorneys sharply criticized the impeachment and urged Republican senators to acquit. The vote immediately suspended Paxton and made him only the third sitting official in Texas’ nearly 200-year history to be impeached. What they are doing is taking away the vote of the majority of the people of Texas,” Bowen said.

"The problem is the office is being used for the benefit of one person," said Jeff Mateer, who was Paxton's second-in-command at the Texas attorney generals' office. Their relationship is central to the case led by Republican impeachment managers that Paxton should be removed from office. Mateer took the stand with few onlookers in the Senate gallery for what is Texas' first impeachment trial in nearly a half century. Paxton attorney Tony Buzbee said Paxton "gave nothing of significance" to Paul and framed the proceedings as an attempt to overturn the will of voters. July 28 (Reuters) - Wells Fargo & Co's (WFC.N) policies around the firearm industry are being probed by the Texas Attorney General's office, the company said in an emailed statement on Thursday. "We have been cooperating with the Texas AG's Office and continue to affirm our standing letter that was provided to that office," the company said. The public finance division, which oversees most municipal bond offerings in Texas, will decide by Aug. 25 whether the bank is a "discriminating company," according to Bloomberg News. Power demand breaks record in Texas again during heat wave
  + stars: | 2023-07-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
July 18 (Reuters) - Power demand in Texas hit a record high for a second straight day on Tuesday as homes and businesses cranked up air conditioners to escape a brutal heat wave. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the grid for more than 26 million customers representing about 90% of the state's power load, has said it has enough resources available to meet soaring demand. That is the fifth record high in ERCOT this summer. One megawatt can power around 1,000 U.S. homes on a typical day, but only about 200 homes on a hot summer day in Texas. Rising economic and population growth has boosted electricity use in Sun Belt states like Texas and Arizona even though overall U.S. power demand is projected to ease in 2023 after hitting a record high in 2022.

The vote in Texas is being closely watched in the industry as it could drive similar moves in other states. Reuters reported last month that Texas planned to mandate EV charging companies to include Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) standard if the companies wanted access to a program to electrify highways using federal funds. Washington state has talked about similar plans and Kentucky has mandated that EV charging companies include Tesla's plug. The rollout of the federal funds require charging companies to offer CCS. But plans to adopt Tesla's technology by Ford Motor (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N) have prompted a flurry of automakers and charging companies to embrace the technology.

Supreme Court Upholds Native American Adoption Law
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Abbie Vansickle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a 1978 law aimed at keeping Native American adoptees with their tribes and traditions, handing a victory to tribes that had argued that a blow to the law would upend the basic principles that have allowed them to govern themselves. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority opinion. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr., dissented. Justice Barrett acknowledged the myriad thorny subjects raised in the challenge to the law, which pitted a white foster couple from Texas against five tribes and the Interior Department as they battled over the adoption of a Native American child. “But the bottom line is that we reject all of petitioners’ challenges to the statute, some on the merits and others for lack of standing.”

In one Little League game in Alabama, a coach was seen grabbing an umpire and throwing him to the ground, while kids looked on in bewilderment. In another viral video, parents in Texas aggressively yelled at an umpire, who ended the game early over the disruption. It doesn’t mean I enjoy the way you are calling the game,” Wood told the umpire. The average pay for a youth umpire is $45 to $85 a game, according to the Babe Ruth League. Kelly Peterfriend, who also has a son in Ramsey’s Little League, says she gets most animated during her son’s soccer games.
WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - Google, a unit of Alphabet (GOOGL.O), has agreed to pay $8 million to settle claims it used deceptive advertisements to promote the Pixel 4 smartphone, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Friday. In this instance, Paxton's office alleged that Google hired radio announcers to give testimonials about the Pixel 4 even though the company had refused to allow them to use one of the phones. "If Google is going to advertise in Texas, their statements better be true," Paxton said in a statement. "In this case, the company made statements that were blatantly false, and our settlement holds Google accountable for lying to Texans for financial gain." Google said in a statement that it takes compliance with advertising laws seriously.
The 911 calls came in rapid succession, with reports of an explosion and fire on Monday that officials would later say had trapped one female employee and thousands of cattle inside a milking parlor at a dairy farm in Dimmitt, Texas. As emergency responders approached after 7 p.m., they witnessed the thick plume of smoke, mushrooming over the plains. “While devastating, I’m grateful that there were no further injuries,” Sid Miller, the Texas agricultural commissioner, said in a statement. As for the cattle, he noted, around 18,000 had died. “This was the deadliest barn fire for cattle in Texas history,” Mr. Miller added.
A man is suing his ex-wife's friends for $3 million, saying they helped her get an abortion. The lawsuit included texts in which the women discussed abortion pills, which are banned in Texas. "Delete all conversations from today," another one of the women said after some discussion about finding and taking abortion medication. The lawsuit is the latest in a number of conservative efforts to target abortion pills, including in Texas. "That includes CVS and Walgreens if their abortion pills find their way into our state."
Advocacy group Farm Action and others have asked the FTC to investigate price gouging, pointing to record profits. Egg companies and some experts say a new strain of avian flu, packaging, and transport costs justify the price. While egg companies claim an outbreak of avian flu, combined with inflated transportation and packaging costs, justify record-high prices, others are calling foul. "Somebody needs to pay attention, and we didn't really see anyone asking why," Joe Van Wye, Farm Action's director of policy and outreach, told Insider. The FTC declined to comment on the letters, and Cal-Maine Foods and Sen. Reed did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
