New York CNN —Most of the year, people visit Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to ski, fly fish or simply enjoy the region’s vast natural beauty. Setting the stage: the economic backdropInflation has slowed significantly since last year’s Jackson Hole conference, alongside glimmers of a cooling labor market. A look back at past Jackson Hole conferencesLast year’s Jackson Hole conference was notable not just because it was the first time in two years that economists gathered in person. Months after Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech, he unveiled a whole new phase of bond-purchasing in what has now become known as QE2. A columnist for the Financial Times went so far as to say that Draghi “certainly stole the show this year [at Jackson Hole].”No matter what comes out of the conference this year, it’s clear that what happens in Jackson Hole doesn’t stay in Jackson Hole.

REUTERS/Jim Urquhart/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Investors may be underestimating the degree of potential market turbulence stemming from the Federal Reserve's economic symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, potentially leaving them more vulnerable to a hawkish surprise, options strategists said. This year's symposium also comes at a time when various asset classes have become more vulnerable to outsized moves following the Jackson Hole event, according to an analysis by derivatives strategists at Barclays. Across asset classes, the average volatility-adjusted move around Jackson Hole has almost doubled in the 2017-2022 period, compared with 2010-2016, the bank's strategists wrote in a note on Tuesday. Just as important will be persuading people like Mr. Marohn that electric cars, renewable energy and electric heaters and stoves are practical, economical and exciting. Many, conservatives in particular, chafe at the prospect of the government forcing them to buy electric cars or ditch their natural gas appliances, polls show. By The New York TimesA clean energy future will require painstaking and individually tailored persuasion campaigns. “Even if some of them deny the science of climate change, they can’t deny good-paying jobs,” he said. “I just want to change the perception that electric cars are not as good as big, noisy muscle cars,” Mr. Lawson said.

A Wyoming judge on Thursday temporarily blocked the first state law specifically banning the use of pills for abortion, the most common method in the country. Just over a week before the ban was scheduled to take effect, Judge Melissa Owens of Teton County District Court granted a temporary restraining order, putting the law on hold pending further court proceedings. Medication abortion is already outlawed in states that have near-total bans, since those bans prohibit all forms of abortion. But Wyoming became the first state to outlaw the use of pills for abortion separate from an overall ban. The law was scheduled to take effect July 1.

That’s where you’ll want to be on April 8, 2024, to take advantage of the last opportunity for decades to see a total solar eclipse over the contiguous United States. Just under seven years after the American eclipse in August 2017, next year’s total solar eclipse will provide the last easy access to such an event for most US residents until August 23, 2044. People watch the solar eclipse on the lawn of Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on August 21, 2017. The longer people wait, the harder it will be to find accommodations inside the eclipse path. People watch the solar eclipse from Clingmans Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee on August 21, 2017.

In northwest Wyoming, in Teton County, is Jackson Hole, a valley located between the Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges. It is known for its access to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Jackson Hole is home to several communities, including Jackson, a town of 10,760 people, according to census data, and Teton Village, the gateway to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Roughly 7 miles west of Jackson and 8 miles south of Teton Village, this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it community of 1,567 people has some of the country’s priciest mountain-town residential real estate as ranked by median listing price, according to Realtor.com. ( News Corp , owner of The Wall Street Journal, also operates Realtor.com under license from the National Association of Realtors.)

Abortion is legal in Wyoming again, oddly enough as the result of a state constitutional amendment pushed by conservatives opposed to Obamacare more than a decade ago. Anti-abortion lawmakers in Wyoming have tried to work around the 2012 amendment in passing the ban on abortion. The state's sweeping ban, dubbed "Life is a Human Right Act," claims that abortion is not a form of health care. It's unclear whether the court will ultimately agree that the anti-Obamacare amendment prohibits a state abortion ban. For instance, a judge in Ohio in October temporarily blocked the state's abortion ban because of a constitutional provision adopted in 2011 as a backlash to Obamacare.
Fed bank directors generally stay out of the limelight, but many U.S. central bankers view them as a critical resource. "I think the probabilities are far higher of achieving that gentle transition, that smoother transition," San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly told Reuters in an interview. This year, of the 108 spots on the 12 Fed bank boards, 44% are filled by women, and 41% by people of color, a review of the data shows. Still, a majority of the Fed's economists are white men, as are its top two monetary policymakers: Powell and New York Fed President John Williams. Hispanics and Latinos, Menendez notes, are a fast-growing segment of the population but are underrepresented at the Fed at all levels, including on Fed bank boards.

3 Ski Vacation Ideas That Suit Both Devotees and Dabblers

“A NEW YEAR, a new slope” could be the mantra of Lisa Parilla, whose Bay Area family of four like to try out new ski runs during winter breaks. While dad and the couple’s 11-year-old son ski all day, she and their 13-year-old daughter like to squeeze in shopping, sightseeing and leisurely lunch breaks. Given high travel costs, booking flights, food and comfortable digs for a five-day spree at $10,000 demands creativity and flexibility. Its iconic Corbet’s Couloir run, however, with a terrifying 45-degree pitch, is not for the faint of heart. For this family trip, Ms. Nash suggests Hotel Terra in Teton Village, or a 1-2 bedroom with full kitchen at Teton Mountain Lodge, a ski-in, ski-out option in Mountain Village.
One letter came from David Sokol, the former Berkshire Hathaway executive who stepped down amid allegations of insider trading. In his letter, Sokol says Holmes' jury may have lacked the business knowledge he believes is necessary to reach an appropriate verdict in this case. The SEC investigated but ultimately decided not to file insider trading charges against Sokol, though Berkshire said he violated the company's insider trading policy. As a knowledgeable investor, I can say with certainty that I would not have found Ms. Holmes guilty on any of the wire fraud charges." Later in his letter, Sokol even invoked Thomas Edison's name to make his case for leniency.
The lawsuit filed on Thursday is the latest development in the high-profile case around Gabby Petito’s death. In doing so, the lawsuit alleges officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice. The suit also alleges police officers “coached Gabby to provide answers that the officers used to justify their decision not to enforce Utah law,” which requires action be taken in response to domestic violence incidents. “Our officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy toward Ms. Petito,” city spokesperson Lisa Adams said in a statement. An independent investigation in January faulted police for making “several unintentional mistakes” including not issuing a domestic violence citation after Petito told police she had hit her fiancé.

REUTERS/Jim UrquhartFRANKFURT (Reuters) - The European Central Bank has a long way to go before it is done with interest rate hikes and it should also start reducing its oversized holding of government debt at the start of next year, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel told a German newspaper. “We should start shrinking our bond portfolio at the beginning of next year, for example by allowing existing bonds to expire in a market friendly way,” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quoted Nagel as saying on Tuesday in an interview. Nagel, asked about future rate hikes, also said: “There’s still a long way to go. “I am convinced that this is not the end of the rate hikes.”
In August, scientists and adventurers found camera gear abandoned by Brad Washburn, an American explorer, in 1937. By tracing the camera's path, scientists could learn how the glacier has changed over eight decades. "They essentially needed help to figure out how the glacier is moving and what's the best way of finding the cache," Medrzycka told Insider. "It was an amazing feeling, and I felt relief that I didn't fail at finding the cache," Medrzycka said, adding, "It was an epic moment for everyone." The team also retrieved two other cameras, including a DeVry "Lunchbox" model, with film still loaded inside.

Francis’ son used a handheld satellite emergency notification device to call for help, sheriff’s Sgt. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is investigating the bear attack and searching for the bear. It was the second reported bear attack in Wyoming this month. Wildlife officials have said that there has been "an abundance of bear activity" in the area of the Shoshone National Forest attack, also in western Wyoming.
