In reality, the Rat Pack offers regular citizens a crash course in rodent mitigation in hopes of inspiring them to take more active roles in what often feels like an unwinnable battle. AdvertisementThose who join the Rat Pack must complete three activities: a "rat walk" that promises to "uncover the world of urban rats," a two-hour "rat academy" on rodent-prevention methods, and a service project, like a park cleanup. If you seek to understand this rat, Corradi told our group, "you can kind of just hold up a mirror and look at yourself." Related storiesCorradi, recognizable from various press appearances and her navy Rat Pack hat, is supposed to offer New Yorkers additional peace of mind. And yet I secured my precious Rat Pack merch by doing exactly that.

AdvertisementBut Americans are not a monolith, as Jefferies consumer strategist Carey Kaufman pointed out in a note to clients Tuesday. Heading into the autumn, a considerable number of those in the bottom quintile appear to be running on borrowed time. Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, reported similar consumer headwinds during its quarterly earnings this month. "What we noticed was an even tighter core consumer at the very last week of each of the months in Q2," he said. "While that's always a tighter week of the month for our core consumer, it was by far the weakest."

No one can keep former President Donald Trump away from Laura Loomer. A senior official from Trump’s 2020 campaign team said that helps explain why Loomer is no longer being kept at arm’s length. “Senator Graham is working tirelessly day and night to help re-elect President Trump,” Graham communications director Taylor Reidy responded in a statement to NBC News. Loomer is “not a member of our staff,” said a Trump campaign aide, who asked to remain anonymous. The campaign said Harris plans to do more interviews with local media in battleground states and speak more with her traveling press corps in the coming days. Her campaign’s media strategy has largely been a continuation of Biden’s, which is to minimize interactions with the media. Some allies said that Harris should use the momentum from the debate to change her cadence of interviews. “I don’t think you can hide for 56 more days from media interviews,” said one Democratic strategist, requesting anonymity to speak candidly. The Harris campaign also held a call that day, but it was off the record.

Retail credit card interest rates reach record high

Here’s one way to think about these kinds of high-rate burdens:Say you sign up for a retailer’s card the day you make a $1,000 purchase. Or, consider that the interest you’ll pay in that same scenario will wipe out the $200 you “saved” after just nine months of making minimum required payments. The lowest rate on a retail card that the study found was 10%, on the Amazon Secured Card. “There are narrow circumstances in which retail cards can work for you. For a loyal shopper who pays in full and avoids interest, that’s a compelling value proposition,” he said.

Following Donald Trump’s lead, Johnson has tied a six-month funding bill to the SAVE Act, which would overhaul voting laws to require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Democrats and some Republicans are pushing for a “clean” funding bill that would keep the government open until December, after the election. The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1 unless Republicans and Democrats strike a deal to extend funding. Because of their miniscule majority, House Republicans can only afford four GOP defections if all lawmakers vote. “I’m a firm NO on bankrupting the nation and a YES on election integrity,” Mills said.

US retail sales came in stronger than expected in July, with Americans spending more overall compared to the prior month, according to Census data. Around 40% of consumers said they planned to pare back spending on accessories, home decor, jewelry, and furniture, per McKinsey's survey. We're now back in an environment where good retailers, strong brands that offer compelling value … will benefit," Siegel said. In the meantime, that could mean more pain for retailers, Siegel said, speculating that many were caught by surprise by the shift in consumer sentiment.

Vance grilled on high cost of Trump's new IVF plan

"Well, look, I think you have insurance companies that obviously are forced to cover a whole host of services," Vance replied. Trump had unveiled the IVF policy in broad strokes during a campaign event in Michigan a day earlier. IVF, Trump and abortionTrump's embrace of IVF as a policy platform is the former president's latest effort to court voters concerned about women's reproductive rights. Trump, in turn, urged the state to find a solution that would "preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama." In Friday's CNN interview, Vance was asked how Trump's new federally mandated IVF funding plan would work if a state chose to ban the procedure.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

Despite its cheeky title, Sabrina Carpenter's new album "Short n' Sweet" arrived on Friday with a tall order to fill. Carpenter's sixth album was preceded by smash hits "Espresso" and "Please Please Please," which peaked at No. But "Short n' Sweet" isn't just Carpenter's most anticipated release to date. The Murdoch family feud taking place in an obscure Nevada court highlights the state's surging popularity as a global center of family trusts and a friendly home to the world's biggest fortunes. The Western state's fast-growing industry of trust and estate attorneys, trust companies and facilitators keeps a deliberately low profile. Yet experts estimate the state likely has hundreds of billions of dollars in trust assets locked away in nondescript office buildings or trust companies, offering little to no visibility to the outside world. In the race among states to attract the hundreds of billions of dollar in new trust assets, Nevada has a comfortable lead. Perhaps its most powerful advantage, and the one with direct bearing on the Murdoch case, is trust flexibility.

By the end of this weekend, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the latest film from Disney’s recently beleaguered Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, will likely have surpassed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. This success would seem to be a win for audiences that want both big franchise movies and adult content. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is certainly not for kids. At its core, this new made-for-adults film is still just another big-budget franchise movie based on empty nostalgia and catering to childishness, if not children. (Or, perhaps, the same tastes that your child currently has, given the size of the adult “Bluey” audience.)

For some Americans, the American Dream has become more like a vision. That's according to a recent Pew Research Center survey, in which more than 8,700 U.S. adults were asked to describe their views of the American Dream. "The American Dream is changing, according to small-business owners," Fara Howard, GoDaddy's chief marketing officer, told CNBC Make It at the time. Thirty-one percent said they'd already achieved the American Dream, and 36% said they were on the right path toward it. "These views are nearly identical to when the Center last asked this question in 2022," the Pew report noted.

After years of starts and stops at the box office, Disney appears to have hit a groove in 2024. Its latest Pixar film, “Inside Out 2,” is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, topping $1.5 billion at the global box office. And the box office hits aren’t expected to stop there. Disney has long been a box office champion, driving significant ticket sales domestically and globally. In the year before the pandemic, Disney had seven theatrical releases top $1 billion at the box office.

Credit card debt is on the rise. Over the last year, roughly 9.1% of credit card balances transitioned into delinquency, the New York Fed reported. The average credit card charges more than 20% — near an all-time high. “With credit card balances at an all-time high and the average credit card rate hovering near record territory, it’s more important than ever to pay down this debt as soon as possible,” Rossman said. If you’re carrying a balance, try consolidating and paying off high-interest credit cards with a lower interest personal loan or switch to an interest-free balance transfer credit card, he advised.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. AdvertisementRepresentatives for the WFA and GARM didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. The platform's lawsuit alleged that after Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, GARM persuaded top brands not to advertise on it. GARM creates frameworks to provide common definitions around areas like hate speech and misinformation; it's voluntary whether advertisers use them. It doesn't rank platforms on these issues, and its role isn't to advise advertisers on where to spend their dollars. An analysis of newly described Homo floresiensis fossils published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications attempts to answer some of these questions about the tiny human.
