The 10-minute walk took me past a row of colorful houses and apartments, red-and-yellow nasturtiums poking from their yards. The train ride, too, gave me precious time to read. It turned out swapping the train for two wheels took a bit more sweat, but no more time at all. My route took me under freeways, but most of the streets I took were so quiet that I could hear birds singing. Flaco, the Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped the Central Park Zoo and spent a year on the lam in Manhattan, is dead. Few apex predators fare well in the built human environment, and Flaco was an apex predator who had never been taught to hunt. He learned to hunt anyway, as a wild owl in the urban unwild. I live in Tennessee, but I began to follow the wonderful urban wildlife photographer David Lei on Instagram just for the pure joy of seeing Flaco, day after day, in all his ill-fated magnificence. Flaco had spent his life among our kind and seemed to be as curious about us as we were about him.

And yet bosses of major carriers are already talking about building something called "5.5G," or "5G Advanced." Carriers in China, South Korea, the United States, and Europe, properly got underway with launches of 5G networks in 2019. 5G Advanced, or the name for the next stage of 5G, is the next evolution of mobile networks. 5G advanced — 5G standalone, that's absolutely fine. Where Old Vegas is still alive today

MuseumsMuseums are obvious celebrations of the past, and in Las Vegas, these two museums have direct links to the Vegas of old. At the Neon Museum, Old Vegas is showcased in the form of neon signs. Other attractionsSeveral other sights and destinations around Las Vegas keep the city’s past alive in this modern age. At one point every casino in Las Vegas had a machine like this one; today this is the only coin-operated iteration left. Finally, the most recognizable throwback to Old Vegas might be the neon “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip near Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

How flying taxis could go mainstream
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( Sarah Sloat | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +7 min
But some experts say if air taxis are going to go mainstream, an overlooked element will need to be scaled up: software. One part is the physical infrastructure, such as a vertiport — where air taxis can take off, land, and recharge. Because it’s a self-flying aircraft, there are unique software needs, Becky Tanner, the chief marketing officer at Wisk, told BI. Courtesy of VolocopterVolocopter also sees a “stand-alone business case” for VoloIQ as a third-party software, Seywald said. Some Uber and Lyft drivers say it's become harder to make money over the past year. AdvertisementMany Uber and Lyft drivers say ride-hailing has become less profitable than it used to be, and some are blaming that on the gig's popularity. Fred is one of several drivers who told Business Insider that an increase in drivers has contributed to fewer available — and lower-paying — trips. This came after the number of global Uber drivers increased 31% in 2022 to a record five million. One San Francisco-based Lyft driver told BI that Waymo's self-driving taxis in the city have added another layer of competition.

Why AI can’t replace air traffic controllers
  + stars: | 2024-02-12 | by ( Amy Pritchett | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
In the air traffic control system, everything must meet the highest levels of safety, but not everything goes according to plan. I’m an aerospace engineer who led a National Academies study ordered by Congress about air traffic controller staffing. What air traffic controllers do? The Federal Aviation Administration’s fundamental guidance for the responsibility of air traffic controllers states: “The primary purpose of the air traffic control system is to prevent a collision involving aircraft.” Air traffic controllers are also charged with providing “a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic” and other services supporting safety, such as helping pilots avoid mountains and other hazardous terrain and hazardous weather, to the extent they can. Researchers are using machine learning to analyze and predict aspects of air traffic and air traffic control, including air traffic flow between cities and air traffic controller behavior.

General Motors' troubled robotaxi service Cruise on Tuesday endured a public lashing from a California judge who compared the company to the devious TV character Eddie Haskell for its behavior following a ghastly collision that wrecked its ambitious expansion plans. After a vehicle driven by a human struck a San Francisco pedestrian in early October, a Cruise robotaxi named “Panini” dragged the person 20 feet (6 meters) while traveling at roughly seven miles per hour (11 kilometers per hour). He also reminded Mason that Cruise could still face other repercussions beyond California, with both the U.S. Justice Department and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probing the robotaxi service's conduct. But Mason indicated that he is leaning toward letting the case continue through the entire hearing process rather than approving a settlement. Tuesday's hearing came less than two weeks after Cruise released a lengthy report reviewing how the company mishandled things after the pedestrian was hurt.

The fact is that gas cars aren’t being weaponized on most of the continent the way they are in America. I’m all in favor of the commendable end to gas cars that Europe has now embraced – a decade or more hence. Of course, that’s only one corner of what’s happened to Paris traffic under the Hidalgo regime. The same toxic, planet-warming emissions are being generated, especially with all that idling in place in endless traffic jams. CNN —It has been a year since China reopened its borders, but despite loosening its stringent Covid-19 restrictions, foreign travelers have been slow to return to the country with numbers down more than 60% from pre-pandemic levels. China’s border authorities recorded 35.5 million entries and exits by foreign nationals in 2023, according to the National Immigration Administration. That’s nearly seven times more than the number from 2022, when the country was deep in its three-year self-imposed Covid isolation. More than half of the border crossings made by foreign travelers in 2023 were recorded in the last three months of the year, according to data from the National Immigration Administration.
