A long discredited, arcane 150-year-old law is back in the news in 2024, and that should terrify anyone who supports reproductive freedom. Anti-abortion activists like to bring up the Comstock Act because one of its clauses prohibits sending through the mail “every article, instrument, substance, drug, medicine or thing” that could possibly lead to an abortion. That could effectively make abortion impossible to access even in places like Minnesota, which has affirmatively protected a woman’s right to choose by passing reproductive freedom laws. In response, I’m prepared to fight back — including by introducing legislation to take away the Comstock Act as a tool to limit reproductive freedom. The Comstock Act hasn’t been broadly enforced since the 1930s.

But after a deluge of overdose deaths and frequent chaos in the streets of Portland, Gov. Tina Kotek signed into law on Monday a measure to restore criminal penalties for drug possession. The rollback has supporters among a wide range of public officials, including Mayor Ted Wheeler of Portland, who found himself presiding over a series of crises since taking office in 2016. He has battled in court to ban daytime camping and tried to establish mass shelter locations (known in Portland as TASS sites) for those without housing.

Another threat to election officialsAt least four swatting incidents have been aimed at the homes of senior officials who oversee or work to secure elections since December. Separately, a Department of Justice taskforce launched in 2021 has reviewed more than 2,000 allegations of hostility, harassment, abuse, or threats to election officials and staffers, a department spokesperson said. Swatting was featured in a tabletop exercise for election officials in New Jersey last month, a spokesperson for the secretary of state told CNN. Tina Kotek wants to scrap a plan to implement tolls on large sections of two Portland-area interstates, she said Monday. The production designer Jack Fisk is the artistic force behind the look of a number of beloved movies: numerous Terrence Malick films like “Badlands” and “The Thin Red Line,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood,” Alejandro Iñárritu’s “The Revenant,” and, most recently, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” for which Fisk is nominated for an Oscar. When the writer Noah Gallagher Shannon decided to profile Fisk for The New York Times Magazine, he didn’t know much about production design. After reporting the piece, Noah says he learned that often when people appreciate the cinematography of a movie, what they’re actually appreciating is the production design: what the frame looks like, rather than how the frame was captured. And Jack Fisk, he found, has a singular philosophy and approach to making the world captured in each movie frame come to life.

Beyoncé released two new songs from her upcoming album during Super Bowl Sunday. One song, "16 Carriages," has a line that could reference how old Bey was when she recorded it. The thought-to-be country album, "Act II," is set to be released on March 29. In "16 Carriages," one of two songs released on Sunday, Beyoncé references different ages of her life. Most notably, Bey released the song "Daddy Lessons" — an ode to her Texas upbringing — as a part of the "Lemonade" album in 2016.

Tina Kotek said she was committed to developing a transparent roadmap for exploring offshore wind opportunities with the input of coastal and tribal communities. As a next step, BOEM said it will prepare an environmental assessment on the potential impacts of leasing offshore wind farms. The offshore wind industry in the U.S. is growing after lagging behind Europe for decades. The first auction of leases to develop commercial-scale floating farms was held in 2022, for five sites off the coast of California.
