President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly and hold snap legislative elections on June 30 and July 7 has given the far right its best shot at governing France for the first time since the Vichy regime of World War II. The move stunned the country’s political class, including high-ranking Macronists from whom the president’s plans were reportedly heavily guarded. And for much of France, the decision remains perplexing. But make no mistake: France is in danger. Since the 2022 legislative elections denied his electoral alliance a majority in the National Assembly, his coalition has been forced to seek support from other parties, namely the right-wing Republicans.

Shares of Tesla popped in premarket trading, after Elon Musk said shareholders are set to approve his controversial $56 billion pay package and a resolution to move the electric car maker's incorporation to Texas. Tesla shareholders have been voting on two resolutions and can have their say up to the company's annual meeting on Thursday. The first measure under consideration is whether to green light a $56 billion pay package that shareholders originally approved in 2018, before being voided by a Delaware judge in January. Musk now said that both of these resolutions are currently passing by "wide margins," without disclosing specifics or his sourcing. Critics of the pay deal argue that Musk is distracted by his other endeavors, and that the package, the largest in U.S. corporate history, is excessive.

Netflix co-founder Marc Randolph's greatest source of pride isn't helping to launch the streaming giant. In the post, which Randolph also published on LinkedIn last year, he wrote that the boundary helped him put work in perspective. "The thing I'm most proud of in my life is not the companies I started," wrote Randolph, who currently sits on a variety of company boards, including Solo Brands. Randolph's family-prioritizing goal may have helped him succeed professionally, too: Setting boundaries between your work and personal life can prevent burnout, experts say. Even Randolph hasn't been immune to breaking his own rule, he wrote in a post on Substack in February.

CNN —A remote Australian community has taken revenge on a massive saltwater crocodile by eating the 3.6-meter (11.8-foot) beast blamed for devouring pets and chasing children. On Wednesday, police in the town of Bulla in Australia’s Northern Territory shot the crocodile after deeming it a “significant risk to the community.”The animal was barbecued after it was shot by police. Numbers have boomed in the decades since, with the Northern Territory now home to some 100,000 crocodiles, according to the local government. In April, a 16-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile in northern Queensland while attempting to swim to shore after his boat broke down. A nine-year-old boy was lucky to survive a crocodile attack in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park in January, after being hospitalized with “puncture wounds.”

Now, a new study that looked at 5 million stars in the Milky Way galaxy suggests that seven candidates could potentially be hosting Dyson spheres — a finding that’s attracting scrutiny and alternate theories. If Dyson spheres really exist, what could they be used for? “Freeman Dyson said that we should dismantle Jupiter — the whole planet (for the raw materials).”That supercolossal scale probably means that Dyson spheres, if they exist at all, are very rare. “However, contamination by circumstellar debris disks, which mimic Dyson Sphere infrared signatures, remains a concern,” he added in an email. However, he added, the radiation fingerprint of the seven Dyson sphere candidates might be explained by natural phenomena as well.

3 risks to global economic growth

The World Bank on Tuesday raised its 2024 outlook for global economic growth to hold steady at 2.6%, an increase from its previous projection of 2.4% growth. “Four years after the upheavals caused by the pandemic, conflicts, inflation, and monetary tightening, it appears that global economic growth is steadying,” Indermit Gill, the World Bank’s chief economist, said in a release accompanying the report. Prospects for the world’s poorest economies are even more worrisome.”Here are three risks the World Bank sees. The World Bank said that spillover risk from the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Hamas war could curb global growth by pushing up oil prices and shipping costs. Trade tensions are already brewing between some of the world’s biggest global economic engines.

New York CNN —Elon Musk said late on Wednesday that Tesla shareholders have re-approved a pay package worth billions that was already thrown out by a Delaware judge earlier this year in a vote that also approved moving Tesla to Texas. “Both Tesla shareholder resolutions are currently passing by wide margins! He famously bought social media platform Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, selling $22.9 billion of his Tesla shares to help fund that purchase. But perhaps a more serious concern among Tesla shareholders is the pioneering electric car company itself. Even with Musk’s pay package again endorsed by shareholders, the Delaware court could still have the final say.

Venice is one of those bucket-list places, a city so extraordinary you want to see it at least once. For those of us who love to travel, the question of whether to revisit a place you’ve been to before is a repeated conundrum. You go back to some places to see certain people or to visit in the company of new people. Whichever way, return travel is as much an act of time travel as it is a geographic one. You’ve changed and the place has changed.

Economists polled by FactSet had anticipated a 0.1% rise in monthly wholesale inflation. Excluding food and energy prices, so-called “core” producer inflation rose 2.3% on an annual basis, the same level seen in April. PPI captures average price shifts before they reach consumers and serves as a potential bellwether for retail-level inflation in the months ahead. The new inflation data follows May’s Consumer Price Index released Wednesday, which showed that the pace of price increase consumers see across goods and services cooled to 3.3% from 3.4% in April. But others expressed concerns that the fall in producer prices may actually represent a negative consequence.

Here are 9 stocks that can benefit from Fed interest rate cuts
  + stars: | 2024-06-13 | by ( Zev Fima | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +7 min
Housing We see Stanley Black & Decker as a major beneficiary of Fed rate cuts due to its link to the housing market. On the one hand, lower rates mean a bank like Wells Fargo makes less money on the money it lends. Biotech Danaher should also see some benefit as lower rates lead to improved funding dynamics for biotech companies. Like in housing, monthly payments become far more manageable at lower rates, and therefore affordability and demand, stand to increase. Salesforce , which has also highlighted more measured deal activity, might not benefit as much from lower rates.

CNN —Armenia will leave a Russia-led military alliance, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed Wednesday, accusing members of the bloc of plotting with bitter rival Azerbaijan to start a war against them. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which Azerbaijan reclaimed in full by force in September. Russia has traditionally allied with Armenia, but their relations have soured in recent months while Moscow’s ties to Azerbaijan have deepened. Pashinyan confirmed to lawmakers that Armenia will withdraw from the Russia-led military alliance. Azerbaijan has also demanded that Armenia change its constitution to remove a reference to Karabakh independence, but Pashinyan has so far resisted the calls.

The results of the Tesla shareholder vote on Elon Musk's pay package will be announced Thursday. And if the pay package does eventually get approved, it's hard to know exactly how much it will be worth when Musk, who is worth $198 billion, per Bloomberg, actually exercises the options. Musk's pay package was worth $2.3 billion when it was granted to him in 2018, though its value has sky-rocketed as the stock ballooned and the various tranches of options vested. "When you start seeing someone making a couple hundred million — $250 million, $220 million — it seems that's when questions and media coverage starts to happen," Schloetzer said.
