Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign event, in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. June 9, 2024. "Hotel workers and people that get tips, you're going to be very happy because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips," Trump said at the Las Vegas rally. More than 1 in 4 private sector workers in Nevada are employed in the tip-heavy hospitality industry, according to up-to-date state figures. The Trump campaign later acknowledged that any policy eliminating taxes on tipped earnings would require congressional approval. Rather, Trump's campaign trail promise is a reflection of Nevada's status as a must-win state for both Democrats and Republicans.

He argues that a "robust legal system" is critical for American business to prosper because it keeps things in check. "But a robust, reliable legal system is not a given," Hoffman wrote. According to one of the prosecutors in the case, Trump had an affair with Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model, while his wife, Melania Trump, was pregnant. The idea that the affair took place while Melania Trump was expecting a child, however, had never been previously reported. "We were just as surprised as you when Josh Steinglass stated that Melania was pregnant at the time," Carol Heller, a representative for McDougal, told Business Insider. Barron Trump, the sole child of Donald and Melania Trump, was born in March 2006 — before McDougal says the affair took place. Former President Donald J. Trump, who was convicted last month on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, is expected to have a virtual interview with a New York City Probation Department official on Monday, three people with knowledge of the matter said. The interview is required as the agency prepares a sentencing recommendation for the judge in the case. Mr. Trump will be in his home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., for the virtual meeting — his first with a probation official since he became the first U.S. president to be convicted of a felony. A jury in Manhattan found him guilty on May 30 in a hush-money case stemming from a payment that Mr. Trump’s then-fixer, Michael Cohen, made to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who said she had a sexual encounter with Mr. Trump in 2006. The payment came in the final days of Mr. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, and the creation of 34 false business records to cover up Mr. Trump’s reimbursement of Mr. Cohen came in early 2017, after he was elected.

Merchan could theoretically sentence Trump to as little as a single day in Rikers, said Kamins, now in private practice at Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins. The open calls for revenge have effectively put retaliation on the ballot this November, and Trump allies have said as much. Trump launched his third campaign for president still seething over his 2020 defeat and signaling revenge against those who kept him from a second term. In March 2023, Trump told the Conservative Political Action Conference: “I am your retribution.”At the urging of some advisers, Trump has at times stepped back from the harsh rhetoric. Trump told the same conservative gathering earlier this year, “Retribution is going to be through success.”It’s a sentiment Trump has repeated many times since — including in the days after his hush money trial ended — but it’s not one he appears fully committed to. After his interview with Trump, McGraw told CNN’s Abby Phillip that he tried to get the former president to understand that a “revenge tour” wouldn’t heal the country and bring people together.

New York prosecutors told a judge they oppose a request by former President Donald Trump to lift the gag order on him in his criminal hush money case. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office asked Judge Juan Merchan to keep the gag order on Trump in place "at least through the sentencing hearing" for the former president next month, and "the resolution of any post-trial motions." Trump's lawyers earlier this week asked Merchan to vacate the gag order, arguing that the grounds for it no longer exist because the trial had concluded, with Trump being convicted on all 34 felony counts. But prosecutors in their new letter to Merchan said the gag order was "based not only on the need to avoid threats to the fairness of the trial itself ... but also on the Court's broader 'obligation to prevent actual harm to the integrity of the proceedings.' A Georgia appeals court on Wednesday halted the criminal election case against Donald Trump in the state pending the outcome of his bid to disqualify the district attorney prosecuting the former president. The order by the Georgia Court of Appeals all but guarantees that Trump and eight co-defendants in the case will not stand trial before the November presidential election, where Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee. The appeals court said it would hear arguments on Oct. 4 on Trump's effort to boot Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case. The appeals court must rule on the question by March 14, 2025, according to the court's website. The appeals court order Wednesday halting the case also applies to Rudy Giuliani, David Shafer, Robert Cheeley, Michael Roman, Mark Meadows, Cathy Latham, Jeffrey Clark and Harrison Floyd.

Four days after presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump was convicted on 34 counts in his hush money trial in New York, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter will be called to answer for federal gun charges in Wilmington, Delaware. But a CBS/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that Americans believe 57% to 43% that the Manhattan jury reached the right verdict. His inflammatory remarks did not reflect the fact that his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and his demagoguery are far more reflective of developing-world banana republics than a fair jury trial. Hunter Biden is entitled to the same presumption of innocence and a trial by a jury of his peers that Trump was. “I’d rather be on President Biden’s side of that contrast than on the extreme MAGA Republican side,” he said.

The criminal trial and conviction of (mostly former) national leaders has happened in stable, mature democracies, just as it has in former dictatorships. The track record of convicted leaders shows just how risky it is to try to predict what will happen. In 2017, South Korea impeached and later criminally convicted now-former President Park Geun-hye in a bizarre corruption scandal involving the influence of a friend and confidante. After a scandal emerged involving the state oil company Petrobras, Lula was convicted in 2017 of corruption and money laundering. “Political leaders can choose how they will speak about these institutions.”

Trump's TikTok rollout came as his own social media company, Trump Media, took a financial tumble in the wake of the historic verdict that convicted the former president on 34 felony counts in his Manhattan hush money trial. Trump launched Truth Social in early 2022 as an alternative, "non-woke" social media platform after he was banned from sites like Twitter and Facebook following the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. Since then, Trump Media has gone public and the former president now holds a 65% stake in the company. The indictment alleged that Trump was a part of an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election. While hush money payments are not illegal in themselves, each charge was tied to a specific allegedly false entry among the financial records of the Trump Organization. Trump has argued that the payments to Michael Cohen, his former fixer who paid Daniels, were correctly labeled as legal expenses. Trump railed against the gag order every day during the trial and again on May 31 when he spoke at Trump Tower the day after the verdict. And the Georgia election interference case is in legal limbo while Trump and several of his co-defendants try to disqualify the Atlanta-area prosecutor who brought the charges.
