They note that the job cuts have occurred mainly at factories that make parts for assembly plants that were closed by strikes. In one case, layoffs have been imposed at a factory that uses supplies from a parts factory on strike. The factories that have been affected by layoffs are in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and New York. DETROIT, Sept 29 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain is expected to launch walkouts at more Detroit Three auto factories Friday, barring last-minute progress in bargaining that has moved slowly since last week. Talks among the UAW and negotiators for the Detroit Three were described as "very active" by one person briefed on the situation. The union has shut one assembly plant at each of the Detroit Three, and 38 parts distribution centers at GM and Stellantis. However, strikes at these plants would have less impact as the models affected are either money-losers or substantially less profitable than the big pickups. The union launched its first walkouts on Sept. 15, with simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant at each automaker.

Even after escalating its strike against Detroit automakers on Friday, the United Auto Workers union still has plenty of leverage in its effort to force the companies to agree to significant increases in pay and benefits. The UAW could, if it chose to, vastly expand the number of workers who could strike assembly plants and parts facilities of General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the owner of the Jeep and Ram brands. All three companies said that talks with the union continued on Saturday, though officials said they expected no major announcements. WARREN, Mich. – Automaker Stellantis has threatened to move production of the current Ram 1500 pickup truck from a factory in suburban Detroit to Mexico, a union leader said Sunday. United Auto Workers Vice President Rich Boyer, who heads the union's Stellantis unit, said the automaker has discussed the move during ongoing contract negotiations that are occurring simultaneously but separately between the UAW and General Motors, Stellantis and Ford Motor . Boyer said the company's plans would include producing a new all-electric Ram pickup truck at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, which currently produces most of the Ram light-duty pickups. "He don't give a s*** about the American auto worker," Boyer said wearing a red UAW shirt with "UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL." "They have said they want to take the Ram 1500 ICE and send it to Mexico."

AEG estimates the total economic loss by calculating potential losses to UAW workers, the manufacturers and to the auto industry more broadly if the sides cannot reach tentative agreements before the current contracts expire. $825 millionThe UAW has more than $825 million in its strike fund, which it uses to pay eligible members who are on strike. The strike pay is $500 per week for each member – up from $275 in 2022. Assuming 150,000 or so eligible workers, that's all-in weekly strike pay of about $75 million. The UAW is scheduled to hold a procedural strike authorization vote next week, which would grant union leaders the ability to strike, if warranted.
