CNN —At least 20 severely decomposed bodies have been found in a boat off the coast of northeastern Brazil, officials say. The boat was found on the coast of Bragança, northeast of Pará, on April 13, the Brazilian Federal Public Ministry announced Sunday. Officials said at least 20 bodies had been found in the boat, but due to the decomposition of the remains it’s unknown how many died on the boat. The deceased are not thought to be from Brazil but possibly from the Caribbean, investigators told CNN Brasil. Police deploy at Vila do Castelo port in Braganca, Brazil, on April 14, after fishermen reported spotting a boat laden with decomposing corpses off the coast of Para state on Saturday.

But department stores, focused on America’s middle class, are fading. The victims of shifting consumer tastes were not the department stores that anchored the local mall, it was the small, locally owned stores along downtown shopping districts that were closing their doors. And possibly even more than the big box competitors, department stores have suffered from consumers shifting to buying items online rather than in person. The steady closing of the department stores that once served as “anchors” of malls across suburban America has been another nail in the coffin of many malls, hurting the department stores that remained in hollowed-out malls with a fraction of their earlier traffic. Trump's lawyers wrote in court papers that they're asking the appeals court to decide whether Engoron "committed errors of law and/or fact" and whether he abused his discretion and/or his jurisdiction. Among other penalties, the judge put strict limitations on the ability of Trump's company, the Trump Organization, to do business. Engoron ordered Trump to pay $355 million in penalties, but with interest the total has grown to nearly $454 million. If Trump is unsuccessful at the Appellate Division, he can ask the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals, to consider taking his case.

CNN —The mother of Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, who died in an Arctic penal colony last week, said Thursday she had seen her son’s body and was being pressured to hold a secret funeral. CNN —The music scales tipped towards justice Sunday night as veteran singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman at long last received a standing ovation decades in the making for her performance of “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Chapman shared the stage with country star Luke Combs, whose cover of “Fast Car” went to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart (making Chapman the first Black woman to top the chart since its advent in 1990). At the end of the performance, Combs turned and bowed to Chapman, the ultimate sign of respect before the world stage. CNN —An Iranian protester with a mental health condition will be executed on Tuesday over the death of a local official during Iran’s 2022 mass demonstrations, his lawyer Amir Raesian said Monday. Iranian authorities allege Ghobadlou ran over a local official during a protest in Robat Karim, Tehran province, in September 2022, according to rights group Amnesty International. He received two death sentences in relation to the death, according to Amnesty. A second death sentence was issued by a criminal court in Tehran province for “murder” at the end of December 2022, it added. International law and standards prohibit using the death penalty against people with mental disabilities, according to Amnesty International.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Country music singer Chris Stapleton, Foo Fighters, Queen Latifah and New Orleans' own Jon Batiste are among the star power set to join The Rolling Stones as headliners of this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, organizers announced Thursday. The event will take place over two weekends, starting April 25 and ending May 5. Organizers announced last fall that The Rolling Stones would headline the festival on Thursday, May 2, as part of the group's North American tour. Because they're appearing on what would traditionally have been “Locals Thursday” at the festival, Jazz Fest added a day to the beginning of this year’s event. At the Cultural Exchange Pavilion this year, Jazz Fest will highlight the music and culture of Colombia with 17 bands performing Colombian salsa, cumbia, champeta and other regional genres.
