MALAGA, Spain, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Italy returned to the Davis Cup final after a gap of 25 years as Jannik Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in both singles and doubles to secure a 2-1 victory over Serbia on Saturday that earned the 1976 champions a title clash with Australia. "It was for sure the game-changer today," Sinner said of his singles heroics at 4-5. "Obviously playing doubles in the decider of a Davis Cup tie is not easy. We are a very complete team and each one of us is really happy to be here. MALAGA, Spain, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic rallied from a set down to power past Lorenzo Musetti 6-7(7) 6-2 6-1 and give the 2010 champions a 1-0 lead over Italy in their Davis Cup semi-final on Saturday. Musetti made a slow start against the high-flying Kecmanovic and narrowly avoided going a double break down, before the world number 27 found his range to level the first set at 5-5 and come from behind again in the tiebreak to clinch it. Serbia, who outclassed Britain in the last eight, will need Djokovic and Dusan Lajovic to defeat the pair of Simone Bolelli and Lorenzo Sonego if Sinner forces a doubles decider. The winner of the tie will face Australia in Sunday's final after Lleyton Hewitt's side beat Finland in the semi-finals. Nov 24 (Reuters) - Jannik Sinner said he was embracing the pressure of the Davis Cup Finals after pulling double duty to help former champions Italy defeat the Netherlands 2-1 and make the semi-finals for the second straight year. "Pressure is a privilege to have. There are not so many players who have this privilege," Sinner said. "Davis Cup pressure is different, because you know that you have a big responsibility, because you don't have many chances. Italy are looking to claim their second title in the premier men's team competition having won the trophy in 1976 and Sinner said he had a good feeling about their chances.

MALAGA, Spain, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Australia reached a second successive Davis Cup final when Alex de Minaur overpowered Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4 6-3 after Alexei Popyrin beat Otto Virtanen 7-6(5) 6-2 to earn the 28-time champions a 2-0 win over Finland on Friday. "Extremely proud moment but I could have not done it without these guys," De Minaur said, pointing to his team. Popyrin, a late switch for the injured Thanasi Kokkinakis, grabbed the first break in the second set when Virtanen hit two successive double faults as Australia sensed an opportunity. "It's nerves that I've never experienced before in my life, the nerves playing the first tie, the first rubber of a Davis Cup, winning my first live rubber of a Davis Cup. De Minaur said Australia would be tricky opponents for any team in the final and tipped the doubles duo of Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell to play a vital role.

MALAGA, Spain, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Italy's Jannik Sinner won his singles match and paired up with Lorenzo Sonego to claim a doubles victory as the former champions beat the Netherlands 2-1 to book their place in the Davis Cup semi-finals on Thursday. Italy, who won their only Davis Cup title in 1976, will now take on a Serbia side featuring world number one Novak Djokovic or Britain who meet in their quarter-final later on Thursday. The changes worked well for both teams in a high-octane clash but Sinner and Sonego won the crucial points in front of a boisterous crowd to send Italy through. World number four Sinner, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the ATP Finals title clash on Sunday, got them back into the quarter-final tie with an impressive display against Griekspoor. BENGALURU, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A record 1.25 million fans attended matches during the 13th edition of the World Cup, which concluded on Sunday with Australia beating hosts India for their sixth title, global body the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday. A total of 1,250,307 fans watched the Oct. 5-Nov. 19 showpiece event from the stands, surpassing the previous mark of 1.016 million set at the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand. While the early matches not involving runners-up India had plenty of empty seats in venues, overall spectator figures had already surpassed the one million mark with six games to go. ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said the one-day international (ODI) tournament had been a "great success." "It has been an event that has not only entertained but also united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport."

BENGALURU, Nov 14 (Reuters) - India are favourites heading into their World Cup semi-final against New Zealand but the hosts will be nervous about facing a side who are at their most dangerous when they have nothing to lose, former Black Caps skipper Ross Taylor said. "This time around, India are even bigger favourites, at home and having played so well during the group stage. If there is a team that India will be nervous facing, it will be this New Zealand side." "When India are batting, you want to get them two or three down in the first 10 overs to put them under pressure. MUMBAI, Nov 14 (Reuters) - New Zealand will approach their blockbuster World Cup semi-final against India with a clean slate and confidence in their ability to upstage the in-form hosts in Mumbai, skipper Kane Williamson said on Tuesday. New Zealand dashed India's hopes in the semi-finals of the 2019 edition and Williamson said he was not concerned that his side were still considered underdogs. "I don't think it has changed too much, but that's fine and India have been exceptional," Williamson said. "One of the, if not the best team going around and playing cricket that matches that. BENGALURU, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Elena Micheli is "heartbroken" that horse riding will not be part of modern pentathlon beyond next year's Paris Olympics but the world champion told Reuters that obstacle racing was the way forward for the sport. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) dropped the sport from its initial list for the 2028 Los Angeles Games but approved its inclusion last month after global governing body UIPM replaced horse riding with obstacle racing. "The idea that Paris will be the last edition with horse riding breaks my heart," Italian Micheli, the 2022 and 2023 individual world champion, told Reuters via email. "Obstacle racing has obviously been a useful substitution in economical, entertainment and timing terms, even if they're two different worlds. BENGALURU, Nov 13 (Reuters) - New Zealand pace bowler Lockie Ferguson said on Monday they must accurately assess Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium pitch ahead of their World Cup semi-final against hosts India and look to tighten up their bowling at the traditionally high-scoring venue. BENGALURU, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Seamer Trent Boult and spinner Mitchell Santner landed timely blows as New Zealand restricted Sri Lanka to 171 all out in their World Cup encounter at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday. A big win for New Zealand will put them in a strong position to bag the last semi-final spot and join India, South Africa and Australia, while Sri Lanka need a victory to boost their chances of a top-eight finish for 2025 Champions Trophy qualification. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson's decision to bowl after winning the toss paid off early as pacemen Boult (3-37) and Tim Southee (1-52) ripped through Sri Lanka's top-order to leave them in trouble at 32-3 inside five overs. A fit-again Lockie Ferguson (2-35) struck in his second over to dismiss the aggressive Perera for 51 as Sri Lanka crumbled to 70-5 before folding in the 47th over for a modest total after Santner (2-22) and Rachin Ravindra (2-21) joined the party. Boult bagged 3-37 to help restrict Sri Lanka to 171 before New Zealand made short work of the chase to snap a run of four straight defeats, finishing their pool stage campaign with 10 points from nine games. "Excited if that happens, I feel like we've done all we can from our point of view and we'll wait and see what happens." "But history suggests it's a good wicket," Boult said. BENGALURU, Nov 4 (Reuters) - India vice-captain Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after the all-rounder sustained an ankle injury last month, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Saturday as it approved Prasidh Krishna as his replacement. Pandya injured his left ankle while trying to stop a shot with his foot on his own bowling during India's seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in Pune on Oct. 19.
