Sports betting is continuing its integration into modern sports culture, and industry leaders do not expect the growth to slow down any time soon. As much tailwind as sports betting companies have received from growing legalization and popularity across the country, taxes and ethical concerns have presented difficulties. Several states have a 51% tax on sports betting companies, and Illinois recently approved a tax increase on sports betting revenue. Sports betting has also garnered negative headlines in recent months as professional sports leagues have struggled to effectively stop players from violating betting and gambling rules. The speakers also addressed widespread concerns about whether the nature of sports betting companies' business models discourages them from providing proper guardrails to stop gambling problems.

We can't stress this enough — increasingly, the chief reason for some TV networks to exist is to transmit NFL games. And at Fox, NFL games and "shoulder programming" accounted for an astonishing 63% of the time viewers spent with the network. MoffettNathansonBut those trends should still worry both the NFL and the TV networks that pay it many billions of dollars every year. But to state the obvious: TV networks pay the NFL many billions of dollars because the NFL delivers TV eyeballs, not because it delivers Instagram eyeballs. And if younger viewers are starting to tune out of the NFL — again, like they have tuned out of everything else on TV — that's going to be a problem for the league and the TV guys.

watch nowWhen Jerry Jones plunked down $150 million to buy the Dallas Cowboys in 1989, the team was losing $1 million a month, according to Jones. The Cowboys are the most profitable in the NFL, posting EBITDA of $550 million last season, $300 million more than the New England Patriots, the second-most profitable NFL team, according to CNBC's list. In 1995, Jones signed a 10-year, $40 million deal with Pepsi-Cola and made a $2.5 million a year, 10-year deal with Nike. The value of the Cowboys' sponsorship deals has ballooned over the years. But there is no doubt he created the economic blueprint for an NFL team.

I live in the great state of New York, where online sports gambling has been legal since 2022. Different state, different gambling rulesMy trash-chute gambling pilgrimage is specific to me, but it represents one of the many quirks of the legalized gambling industry. When you're in New York, you're not allowed to bet on in-state colleges. Leagues love gambling, until they don'tBut what makes this new era of sports gambling particularly confusing is the relationship between sportsbooks and the leagues they're setting lines for. Yet despite all the promotion (and sponsorship money) touting sports gambling, athletes betting on their own games is still very much banned.

Executives at ESPN and Penn Entertainment hope that's true of ESPN Bet, which will soon debut in the Big Apple as football season heats up. The company hopes its massive platform and popular talent will attract new users to ESPN Bet. A far lower spend rate than its peers drove the service's market share below 4% in the first quarter of 2024, BofA estimated. In those states, ESPN Bet's share is generally between 3% and 6%. U.S. adults will wager $35 billion this NFL season, according to projections from the American Gaming Association. Since last NFL season, Maine, North Carolina and Vermont have allowed sports betting operators to launch in their states. "The NFL season is our biggest acquisition period of the year," said Christian Genetski, president of FanDuel, the nation's leading sportsbook. Since then, Fanatics Sportsbook acquired PointsBet's U.S. operations and technology, which is now fully integrated. It first launched in November last year, smack in the middle of NFL season.

Researchers have begun measuring the impact of legalized sports gambling on American households, and the initial results paint a worrisome picture about how its expansion has affected bettors’ finances. In separate papers released this month, academics have found that households in states where gambling was legalized saw significantly reduced savings, as well as lower investments in assets like stocks that are generally considered more financially sound. Meanwhile, states that legalized sports betting saw their residents’ aggregate credit scores decrease, while bankruptcies increased. North Carolina became the most recent state to offer online sports betting earlier this year. Earlier this year, the major sports betting platforms formed the Responsible Online Gaming Association to address problem gambling.

Algerina Perna | Baltimore Sun | MCT | Getty ImagesThe explosion of online sports betting is taking a toll on personal finances, particularly among those who are financially distressed. The authors found that sports betting has exploded since the Supreme Court overturned a federal law prohibiting it in 2018. Those who participate tend to invest less and have higher debt levels. "Two to three years after betting becomes legal, there is a noticeable drop in net investment relative to states where betting is not yet legal," the report said. The higher credit card debt indicates that these households are not just shifting funds from one type of entertainment to another (for example, shifting money from betting on lotteries to betting on sports).

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A Southern California bookmaker who took thousands of sports bets from the former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani pleaded guilty Friday to running an illegal gambling business. “I was running an illegal gambling operation, laundering money through other people’s bank accounts,” Bowyer told the judge. According to prosecutors, Bowyer ran an illegal gambling business for at least five years in Southern California and Las Vegas, and he took wagers from more than 700 bettors, including Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Meanwhile, sports gambling is illegal in California, even as 38 states and the District of Columbia allow some form of it. Federal prosecutors said Bowyer’s other customers included a professional baseball player for a Southern California club and a former minor league player.

Mobile betting powerhouse DraftKings is planning a tax on consumers in states with the highest sports betting tax rates, as the company looks to boost profit. The company announced Thursday that starting next year it will implement a gaming surcharge on winning bets in states with multiple betting operators and where the tax rate is above 20%. Fears of tax hikes in gaming pressured DraftKings stock and other betting companies like FanDuel back in May, when Illinois approved a tax hike on sports betting revenue. The sliding tax rates impose 40% levies on companies with the largest adjusted gross revenue. New York and New Hampshire each maintain 51% tax rates on sports betting companies.

Mizuhara was one of Bowyer’s clients, placing at least 19,000 bets with Bowyer’s illegal gambling business from September 2021 to January 2024, according to prosecutors. Bowyer would increase Mizuhara’s betting limits even as Mizuhara had total losing bets of at least $182,935,206, leaving the former interpreter owing about $40,678,436, the plea agreement states. Bowyer’s other clients include “Individual B,” a professional baseball player for a Southern California-based baseball team, and “Individual C,” a former minor-league baseball player, the plea agreement states. In his plea agreement, Bowyer admitted to falsely reporting his taxable income to the IRS on his tax return for 2022. That year, Bowyer reported $607,897 in total income, while his unreported income from his illegal gambling business was $4,030,938, officials said.

NYSEIn 2018, British regulators sanctioned the UK arm of online gambling giant Flutter after it failed to catch an astonishing anomaly. The United States is Flutter's largest and fastest-growing market in terms of revenue. Both online sports betting and online casinos have been legal and regulated far longer in Britain than in the United States. But in the United States, Flutter doesn't place such limits on the age group. Around a decade ago, British politicians became concerned about a rise in gambling-linked fraud and suicides involving online VIP customers.
