June 1 (Reuters) - One lucky punter who believed 14 years ago that Josh Tongue would one day play for England and placed a cheeky bet will win 50,000 pounds ($63,000) when the fast bowler makes his international debut against Ireland on Thursday. Tim Piper had watched Tongue play when he was just an 11-year-old and placed a 100-pound bet at odds of 500-1 that he would play a test match for England in the future. "I've kept the bet slip in a cupboard all these years," Piper told BBC Sport. Tongue had, however, contemplated retirement during a 15-month shoulder-injury layoff from 2021-2022 before two operations and botox injections fixed the issue. Did the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Gasp) Get It Right?
  + stars: | 2023-05-05 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Dear listeners,I don’t have much reverence for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — a shadowy and arbitrary institution founded by record executives and music industry influencers who have historically hewed to a pretty narrow definition of rock ’n’ roll. However, this year’s inductees, which were announced earlier this week, represent one of the strongest classes in recent memory. “Rock ’n’ roll is not an instrument; rock ’n’ roll is not even a style of music,” he said. “Rock ’n’ roll is a spirit. Rock ’n’ roll is not conforming to the people who came before you, but creating your own path in music and in life.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame named its latest inductees on Wednesday: Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners will join the institution’s ranks at its 38th annual ceremony on Nov. 3. The class of 2023 pays homage to rock ‘n’ roll’s roots by including artists across racial and genre lines, from hip-hop (a descendant of the blues) to country, to reflect the music’s diverse, heterogeneous origins. This year’s awards also acknowledge the particular achievements of hip-hop—“the new rock ‘n’ roll,” as John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, put it in an interview. The induction ceremony will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in New York, the birthplace of hip-hop, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Internationally, it was another grim week for the Biden administration, the United States of America, and world peace. Indian officials reported that China is supporting the development of a military listening post on Myanmar’s strategic Great Coco Island in the Bay of Bengal. Farther south, a Sudanese military faction backed by Russia’s Wagner Group battles for control of Africa’s third-largest nation. The usual spinners and makeup artists are doing their best to make the disorderly unraveling of the American-led world order look like a visionary triumph of enlightened foreign policy, but former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers expressed a more cogent view. What we get from the United States is a lecture.’ ”

Jadeja claimed a career-best 7-42 as he and Ravichandran Ashwin (3-59) routed Australia for a paltry 113 in their second innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Skipper Rohit Sharma made 31 and Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 31 not out, scored the winning run in his 100th test. Earlier, resuming on a promising 61-1, Australia added 52 runs before Jadeja and Ashwin engineered a spectacular collapse. Once Jadeja sent back Marnus Labuschagne (35), the wheels came off Australia's innings with nine of the 11 batsmen posting single digit scores. Biden’s Federal Budget Blowout
  + stars: | 2023-02-15 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
White House spinners are boasting that Joe Biden’s Presidency has been historic, and in one sense they’re right. In a mere two years he has midwifed the biggest expansion of government since the 1960s. That’s the real news in Wednesday’s annual budget and economic forecast from the Congressional Budget Office, and the bill for this blowout has only begun to come due. It’s also far enough past the pandemic that it offers a guide to how all of the new spending and tax increases will affect the federal fisc for a decade. You don’t have to be an alarmist to see that the trend is setting the U.S. up, sooner or later, for a fateful reckoning.
Feb 5 (Reuters) - Australia coach Andrew McDonald remains hopeful Cameron Green can feature against India when the first test between the nations begins in Nagpur on Thursday after the all-rounder's finger injury made "significant" improvement. McDonald said Green still had progress to make before he could be considered for the series opener. "We've got a fair bit to work through him before the first test match," McDonald told reporters. "I wouldn't say he was in discomfort when he was bowling. "I wouldn't say (picking two spinners) is a given," he said.

Having taken a 78-run lead in the runfest, England declared their second innings on 264-7 to set Pakistan an improbable victory target of 343 with four sessions to go. Opener Imam-ul-Haq (43) and debutant Saud Shakeel (24) were resisting England's victory march when bad light stopped play. Agha Salman's breezy 53 frustrated England who had to toil for about 75 minutes to claim the last three Pakistan wickets. England were rattled early in their second innings with Naseem Shah in the thick of things. Naseem dismissed Ben Duckett, one of four century-makers in England's first innings, for a first-ball duck with the second delivery of the innings.

Dwyane Wade has a thing for cars. He decked it out with 26-inch rims and spinners, he told Men's Health in a 2020 interview. That was before Wade heard what he says is the best money advice he ever got: "To get rid of about 16 cars," including a Maybach he never drove that was costing him $6,000 a month. But Wade eventually conceded and whittled down his collection to just one car: "a modest Audi Q8," he told Men's Health. He blew through his early money quickly.
