Is Online Shopping Bad for the Planet?
  + stars: | 2024-04-22 | by ( Dionne Searcey | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Q: How much do I need to worry about the impact of my online shopping? The convenience of online shopping is hard to beat. Transportation needed for online shopping spews greenhouse emissions. even found that online shopping could be more sustainable than traditional shopping in more than 75 percent of scenarios that researchers came up with. Online retailers and delivery companies have been trying to make online shopping more climate friendly.
As many American companies struggle to navigate the world's second-largest economy, Meta Platforms has found itself raking in billions of dollars from China without the direct challenges of doing business there. The influx in spending from Chinese ecommerce advertisers has been a "significant positive" for Meta, said Rohit Kulkarni, analyst at Roth MKM covering internet companies. Many American companies doing business in China have battled similar challenges as the post-Covid recovery there has progressed slower than expected. Meta has said it has a "diverse advertiser base" of Chinese companies. The concern is that as more Chinese advertisers target American consumers through Meta's platforms, that could drive up the price of ads for everyone.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Monday sued to block the $8.5 billion acquisition of Capri Holdings by Coach and Kate Spade's parent company, Tapestry . With the transaction, the luxury brands could be poised to better compete with European luxury names, such as Burberry and LVMH's Louis Vuitton. Both Tapestry and Capri have been under pressure, as consumers continue to be choosier with discretionary spending. Yet Capri, in particular, has been more vulnerable because of its heavier reliance than Tapestry on department stores and other wholesale retailers. The vast majority of Tapestry's sales are through its own website and stores, with wholesale accounting for only about 10% of sales globally in the most recently reported fiscal quarter.

Employees at supermarkets and Walmart stores often ignore gig workers — or berate them. Several gig workers that BI spoke with said that cooperating — or fighting — with store workers is a regular part of their job as independent contractors. AdvertisementFor Spark workers who go into a Walmart store, things can be even worse — ironic, some say, given Spark is owned and operated by Walmart. Conflict between gig workers and store employees isn't new. AdvertisementAnd store employees aren't the only ones giving gig workers a hard time.

Whatever happened to the two-door car?
  + stars: | 2024-04-20 | by ( Peter Valdes-Dapena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
There are still two-door cars today, of course, but they’re almost all high-performance sports cars not intended for comfortable cruising. For car designers, two-door models can offer more striking proportions to play with, long hoods that evoke power and tapered, aerodynamic back ends. Today, it’s rare to see a two-door car that isn’t a performance model like the Mustang or Corvette. Today, if you have a two-door car and you have kids, you also have a backache. While some two-door cars used to be bargain items – the cheapest entry-level cars were almost always two-door hatchbacks – today two-door models are seen mostly in European luxury car showrooms.

Procter & Gamble sales disappoint as price hikes slow down

In October, executives said that they anticipated returning to volume growth in fiscal 2024. However, three of P&G's divisions reported volume growth for the quarter. The company's grooming business, home to its Gillette and Venus razors, reported volume growth of 2%. And fabric and home care, which includes Febreze and Swiffer, saw 1% volume growth. That's a reversal from the last two fiscal years, when commodity costs weighed on the company, leading to price hikes.

“Shrinkflation,” the signs say. “This product has seen its volume decrease and the price charged by our supplier increase.”On Friday, the French government took steps to require every food retailer in the country to follow suit. By July 1, stores will have to plaster warnings in front of all products that have been reduced in size without a corresponding price cut, in a bid to combat the consumer scourge known as shrinkflation. “The practice of shrinkflation is a scam,” Bruno Le Maire, France’s finance minister, said in a statement. “We are putting an end to it.”

Attention shoppers, you may be eligible to receive up to $500 from Walmart if you purchased certain groceries from the big box retailer over the past six years. A class action lawsuit filed in Florida claims that "Walmart uses unfair and deceptive business practices to deceivingly, misleadingly, and unjustly pilfer, to Walmart's financial benefit, its customers' hard-earned grocery dollars." The lawsuit specifically alleges Walmart "falsely inflates the product weight" and overcharged shoppers for certain "weighted goods" and "bagged citrus." "We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need. Here's how to see if you're eligible for a cash payment and how to file a claim.

Those are key items to watch out for Friday morning when P & G reports its fiscal 2024 third-quarter earnings. Shares of P & G hit a multiyear high of $163 on March 28 — less than $2 per share below all-time highs reached in late April 2022. Traditionally for Procter, pricing has contributed low single digits to its earnings growth. In P & G's fiscal second quarter , pricing contributed 4% to sales growth, but volumes were down on a companywide basis. He expects to see a healthy organic growth rate consistent with the 4% organic growth reported in the second quarter.

New York CNN —Online furniture and home furnishings seller Wayfair is set to open its first-ever namesake store next month, the company announced Thursday. It will also feature an onsite restaurant called “The Porch,” the company said, taking a page out of Ikea’s store setup. Furniture stores need to always be advertising, Saunders added, because people generally don’t buy furniture very often. This is particularly important in furniture and finishings where people like to see and try out products before buying,” Saunders said. “If this store is successful then it could be the start of wider physical expansion for Wayfair,” Saunders said.

Amazon will begin selling its smart grocery carts to other retailers, the company said Wednesday, marking its latest bid to turn its Dash Cart technology into a service. Amazon launched the Dash Cart in 2020 at its Fresh supermarket chain before adding it to select Whole Foods stores. Amazon teams working on Just Walk Out, Dash Carts and other physical store technologies were among those hit by layoffs earlier this month.

Options premiums are rising and we'll discuss how to take advantage of that by generating income through a covered call options strategy. First the consumer price index inflation data came in hotter than expected on Wednesday. The expectation had been that the pace of inflation – once those year-over-year price increases were in place — would slow in March. Since then, the "average" level of the VIX Index is 19.53. Holders could therefore look to options to potentially provide some yield if they are expecting less capital appreciation.
