June's historical average return comes out at just 0.1% while July typically sees a 1.2% gain, according to Stovall. Summer exception This summer could prove to be an exception to the typical summer lull, given the upcoming presidential election, Stovall said, noting that the broad market index has posted an average 3.7% summer increase during the 19 election years since World War II. Ahead of this year's election, Stovall expects a few aerospace and defense contractors to stand out. Other areas of the market that should survive and thrive during a slow summer period are consumer staples companies, tobacco names, health-care distributors and pharmaceuticals, Stovall said. Costco and Walmart shares are up roughly 29% and 2% this year, respectively, posting strong returns as consumers have become more motivated by price and value in a high-inflation environment.

Experts say that this previously overlooked gemstone is rocketing in desirability and value, as collectors look beyond the so-called “Big Four’” (diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires) for more affordable, niche gemstones that may just be a shrewd investment. “Spinels and Paraiba tourmalines have seen a steady increase in demand over the last decade.”Boghossian's paraiba and diamond set features paraibas and fancy yellow diamonds. Experts posit that only one Paraiba tourmaline is mined for every 10,000 diamonds — and while similar hues are found in Madagascar, the scarcity of Brazilian stones has seen prices soar. At Bonhams, Tonkin said prices for top-quality Paraiba tourmalines reached $75,000 per carat in 2022, compared with $4,800 per carat in 2009. “These incredibly vibrant, clean gemstones really stirred something in me,” she explained in an email.

CNN —US intelligence has learned of discussions between Houthis in Yemen to provide weapons to the Somali militant group al-Shabaab, in what three American officials described to CNN as a worrying development that threatens to further destabilize an already violent region. The Houthis are Zaydi Shiites, and al-Shabaab traditionally has been deeply ideologically opposed to Shiism. “Being able to sell some weapons would bring them much needed income,” the senior administration official said. But a weapons agreement between al-Shabaab and the Houthis would be something new, according to US officials. No matter what the Houthis provide, there’s likely limited opportunity for al-Shabaab to fire directly at US assets in the region.

In the past 24 hours, $56 million in long bitcoin liquidations have occurred across centralized exchanges, according to CoinGlass. The market saw another $56 million in long bitcoin liquidations on Thursday, ahead of a better-than-expected May U.S. jobs report Friday. Bitcoin fell back under $70,000 after briefly testing the level to begin the month.

The stock's rise has been a boon to employees and insiders at the chip company who own shares. So-called RSUs provide workers with shares at a future date following a vesting period of typically three to five years. Employers can also offer incentive stock options, which allow employees to buy a specified number of shares at a stated – or strike – price. Workers who exercise their ISOs are also subject to capital gains taxes when they sell the stock they've purchased. Nonqualified stock options are another form of equity compensation.
