REUTERS/Joshua Roberts Acquire Licensing RightsSept 22 (Reuters) - McDonald's (MCD.N) is raising royalty fees for new U.S. franchise operators for the first time in nearly three decades, according to an internal letter viewed by Reuters. The burger giant is raising the fees that franchise owners pay for the brand to 5% from 4%, starting Jan. 1, for any new restaurants they open. It will also change the term for payments in the U.S. from "service fees" to "royalty fees", used by all other McDonald's markets around the world. Royalty is a fee paid by restaurant operators to the owner and the rate is set based on the revenue generated by the licensed property.

Dollar General shares tank after another disappointing quarter

Dollar General shopping carts are seen outside a store in Mount Rainier, Maryland, U.S., June 1, 2021. Shares of the company have fallen about 36% this year, making it one of the worst performers in the S&P 500 in 2023. In an effort to improve its business and lure in value-seeking customers, Dollar General has been investing to keep prices low for its everyday staples, which are typically less profitable. Meanwhile, sales in the home products and apparel segments, which carry higher margins, fell more than 7% each in the second quarter ended August 4. For the quarter, same-store sales fell 0.1%, compared with analysts' average estimate of a 1.08% rise, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Dollar General shopping carts are seen outside a store in Mount Rainier, Maryland, U.S., June 1, 2021. The Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based retailer has fallen short of the average analyst forecast for four straight quarters, and on Thursday cut its annual profit and sales targets for the second time this year. The quarter "marks the fourth consecutive guide down for Dollar General, which admittedly creates further uncertainty if we are hitting the bottom yet," said Raymond James analyst Bobby Griffin. "While we expect traffic trends to improve, we do not expect positive traffic until the fourth quarter," CFO Kelly Dilts said. To better compete with rival Dollar Tree and bigger grocer Walmart (WMT.N), Dollar General has been investing to keep prices low for its everyday staples, improve merchandise mix and increase wages.

REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 29 (Reuters) - United States Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has said U.S. companies have raised concerns that China has become "uninvestible", pointing to fines, raids and other actions that have made it too risky to do business in the world's second-largest economy. The development comes days after SoftBank Group-backed (9984.T) chip designer Arm Holdings made public its IPO filing. Instacart said its revenue had surged to $1.48 billion in the six months ended June 30, compared with $1.13 billion in the same period last year. Net income was $242 million during the six-month period, compared to a $74 million loss a year earlier, Instacart said. Customers can order through the Instacart app, and an Instacart "shopper" delivers the product in as little as 30 minutes. Unlike in an IPO, no shares are sold in advance in a direct listing and investors can sell their shares directly to the public.

The deal, which would give Shein a roughly one-third interest in SPARC Group, expands Forever 21's reach by bringing the label to Shein's online platform, which serves about 150 million users. The partnership also presents an opportunity for Singapore-based and China-founded Shein to step into Forever 21's retail locations across the United States. Under the agreement, SPARC Group would also become a minority shareholder in Shein. Shein's Forever 21 deal will help it reach beyond its core ultra-fast fashion, primarily Generation Z, customer base, Amlani said. The Forever 21 deal will also enable the fast-fashion retailer to test in-person experiences including "shop-in-shops" and allow customers to return merchandise in physical stores.

REUTERS/Erin Scott/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 24 (Reuters) - Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) forecast annual profit largely below estimates on Thursday, owing to higher costs and a shift in spending towards lower-margin consumables. Chief Financial Officer Jeff Davis said the profit outlook was also impacted by unfavorable shrink trends and higher diesel fuel prices. Dollar Tree, like retailers Target (TGT.N) and Macy's (M.N), has been plagued by a rise in retail shrink, where inventory is lost, damaged, or stolen. Dollar Tree said it now expects to earn in the range of $5.78 to $6.08 per share in fiscal 2023, compared with its prior outlook of between $5.73 and $6.13.

Kohl's beats profit estimates on cost cuts, leaner inventory
  + stars: | 2023-08-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Aug 23 (Reuters) - Kohl's Corp (KSS.N) beat estimates for quarterly profit on Wednesday, as leaner inventories, lower costs and fewer discounts helped the department store chain counter a broader retail slowdown. Inventory declined 14% during the quarter as Kohl's undertook stock clearance, leading to a 61 basis points drop in gross margin. "It managed to sell more excess inventory and reduced its expenses, which helped it beat expectations," Insider Intelligence analyst Zak Stambor said. "While Kohl's is still in the early innings of its turnaround plan, it appears to be moving in the right direction," Stambor said. The company earned 52 cents per share in the second quarter ended July 29, above analysts' estimates of 22 cents.

Its cautious view also weighed on the retail sector shares, including Kohl's (KSS.N) and Nordstrom (JWN.N). In a clear sign that higher borrowing costs were straining customers, Macy's credit card revenue, which accounted for about 2% of the total revenue in the quarter, slumped 41%. Throughout the quarter, Macy's cleared excess stock after a move to convert its merchandise for the spring and summer hurt demand, leading to a slip in gross margin. Macy's reaffirmed its expectations for 2023 sales of $22.8 billion to $23.2 billion and adjusted full-year profit per share between $2.70 and $3.20. At $12.8, Macy's shares were set for their worst session since March last year.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 22 (Reuters) - Macy's (M.N) kept its annual forecasts unchanged even though its second-quarter sales and profit beat market expectations on Tuesday as the upscale department store chain expects consumer spending to stay under pressure. It reaffirmed its 2023 sales expectations of $22.8 billion to $23.2 billion and adjusted full-year profit per share between $2.70 and $3.20. "Despite beating profit and sales expectations, Macy’s earnings show that discretionary demand remains constrained as shoppers allocate more of their budgets to everyday necessities," Insider Intelligence analyst Rachel Wolff said. Comparable sales for Macy's-owned and licensed stores fell 7.3%, compared with expectations of a 6.48% drop, according to Refinitiv data.

In an effort to boost sales, Macy's - which reports second-quarter results on Tuesday - has focused on revamping its private brands, including its new On 34th label launched in July. Analysts expect Macy's to post a 87% slide in second-quarter profit, dragged down by heavy discounting to clear spring and early summer merchandise, according to Refinitiv. Thirteen percent answered Walmart and 9% answered Amazon, compared to 5.8% for Macy's and 3.3% for Nordstrom. Aug 10 (Reuters) - Coach parent Tapestry (TPR.N) will buy Michael Kors owner Capri Holdings (CPRI.N) in a deal valued at $8.5 billion, creating a U.S. fashion powerhouse to challenge larger European rivals for a bigger share of the global luxury market. Thursday's deal will also bring under one roof Tapestry's more affordable luxury brands Kate Spade, Stuart Weitzman and Capri's Jimmy Choo and Versace labels. That compares with about $87 billion for LVMH last year and roughly $23 billion for another European rival Kering (PRTP.PA). The deal will help Capri revive its Michael Kors brand under "better management" at Tapestry after weak sales in the past few quarters, analysts said. July 28 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) has exercised options for the delivery of 30 Boeing 737 MAX 7 planes next year, and converted 24 existing MAX 7 orders to MAX 8, the company said in an SEC filing on Friday.
