On average, August has been the worst performing month for stocks since 1986, according to Morningstar. That means the dwindling number of traders who remain must take extra care in a such a potentially volatile environment. 99-year-old trucking company Yellow shuts downYellow Corp., a 99-year-old trucking company that was once a dominant player in its field, halted operations Sunday and will lay off all 30,000 of its workers, reports my colleague Chris Isidore. He said the company began taking on significant amount of debt 20 years ago in order to acquire other trucking companies. “Now their debt service is just enormous,” he said, pointing to $1.5 billion in debt on its books.

Roper, who turns 59 in October, said he’s not ready to retire and has already started applying for jobs elsewhere. He’s worked 28 years at Holland Freight, which Yellow bought in 2005. In contrast, less-than-truckload carriers have relatively low driver turnover, an average of 18% to 20%, according to Jindel, which means those jobs, already less numerous than truckload jobs, are open far more rarely. He said he’s already gotten some positive response from some of the LTL carriers he’s applied to, so he’s hopeful. But if that doesn’t work out, he said, he’ll consider looking at jobs in the truckload sector.

New York CNN —Yellow Corp., a 99-year old trucking company that was once a dominant player in its field, halted operations Sunday and will lay off all 30,000 of its workers. The unionized company has been in a battle with the Teamsters union, which represents about 22,000 drivers and dock workers at the company. This is a sad day for workers and the American freight industry,” said Teamsters President Sean O’Brien in a statement. Eventually non-union carriers came to dominate the LTL segment as well. Yellow, Roadway and a third company known as CF or Consolidated Freightways had once been known as the Big Three of the trucking industry.

New York CNN —The end may be close for Yellow Corp, a nearly century-old trucking company with 30,000 employees. But the company handled only about 7% of the nation’s 720,000 daily LTL shipments last year, said Jindel. Higher prices will particularly be true for Yellow customers, Jindel said. But the LTL segment requires a network of terminals on which to sort incoming and outgoing freight. But eventually non-union carriers came to dominate the LTL segment as well.

CNN —India is bidding to become only the fourth country to execute a controlled landing on the moon with the launch Friday of its Chandrayaan-3 mission. Its first lunar probe, the Chandrayaan-1, orbited the moon and was then deliberately crash-landed onto the lunar surface in 2008. Only three other countries have achieved the complicated feat of soft-landing a spacecraft on the moon’s surface – the United States, Russia and China. India’s maiden lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, discovered water molecules on the moon’s surface. Eleven years later, the Chandrayaan-2 successfully entered lunar orbit but its rover crash-landed on the moon’s surface.

Most online shoppers have come expect free shipping, according to a recent survey. It says companies like Macy's and Abercrombie & Fitch have raised their free shipping minimums online. Free shipping "wasn't going to last, and finally the party is over," Satish Jindel, president of shipping data company ShipMatrix, told the Journal. According to data from shipping technology firm Shippo, nearly two-thirds of Americans said they wouldn't buy something online without free shipping. "Having some type of free shipping option is now a permanent expectation," Krish Iyer, vice president of strategic partnerships at shipping software company Auctane, told Insider earlier this year.

New York CNN —A marathon negotiating session between UPS and the Teamsters union ended early Wednesday morning with both sides accusing the other of walking away from the table. The current contract expires July 31, which means 340,000 UPS workers could go on strike August 1. Many in the shipping community had been looking for a deal between UPS and the teamsters by the end of the July 4 holiday weekend, he said. Amazon also has its own delivery service now. Dating from the days of British colonial rule when police stations used the birds to communicate with each other, the state's carrier pigeon service employs more than 100 Belgian Homer pigeons. The pigeons usually carry messages written on lightweight onion paper, inserted into a capsule and then tied to a leg. As they get older, the pigeons are taken some distance away to be freed and fly back to the shelter by instinct. Carrier pigeons took news of the conquest of Gaul to Rome, brought to England the news of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, and were widely used to carry messages during the two world wars. "Even in the unlikely event that every mode of communication breaks down tomorrow, the pigeons will never fail," he said.

FBI agents flew with van der Sloot on a US Department of Justice plane to an airport in Birmingham, Alabama, where he landed Thursday afternoon. Van der Sloot was seen leaving the Ancón 1 prison in Lima early Thursday, as he was driven away in a black van while in the custody of law enforcement. Peru initially agreed to extradite van der Sloot to the US to face those charges only after he serves his murder sentence. “I want to go to the US,” van der Sloot told Altez in a letter. CNN —Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, was “severely” beaten in a Peruvian prison, his attorney told ABC News on Monday. It may be connected to gang rules inside the Challapalca Prison where van der Sloot is being held, Altez said. Natalee Holloway was last seen alive with van der Sloot and two other men 18 years ago leaving a nightclub in Aruba. The three men – van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe – were arrested in 2005 and released due to insufficient evidence. They were rearrested and charged in 2007 for “involvement in the voluntary manslaughter of Natalee Holloway or causing serious bodily harm to Natalee Holloway, resulting in her death,” Aruban prosecutors said at the time.
OneWeb, a rival to Elon Musk's Starlink internet satellite venture, is aiming to roll out coverage globally after successfully launching the final batch of satellites needed for its broadband service over the weekend. While OneWeb has a few more satellites to deploy in May and June, it now has enough to deliver internet connectivity to any spot in the globe, according to company executives. OneWeb plans to launch 648 satellites in total, of which 588 satellites are required for global coverage. The rest will serve as spares that can step in, in case some other satellites on the network go rogue. Starlink, the space internet unit of Musk's SpaceX, has launched thousands of satellites to bring network connectivity to places with patchy internet.
LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Thousands of people in Ukraine have sustained complex injuries linked to the war and need rehabilitation services and equipment to help them, a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Tuesday. They include fractures, amputations, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries and burns, Dr Satish Mishra from the WHO's regional office for Europe, told a media briefing. Since then, the pandemic and the war have significantly increased the need for rehab services, he added. In comparison, about 2 in 5 people across the European region in 2019 had a health condition that could have benefited from rehabilitation services, according to Morgan. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a "special military operation" and says it does not target civilians.

Generac may be a bit too optimistic about its prospects going forward, according to Wells Fargo. Analyst Praneeth Satish downgraded the stock to equal from overweight, noting the power generator maker could fall short of its aggressive 2023 guidance. He reiterated his target price of $135, implying only a 3.9% upside from the stock's closing price of $129.91 on Thursday. Wells Fargo's base case assumes a more moderate growth rate for the next two years, forecasting revenue to decline 12% in 2023 before growing 11% in 2024. However, Satish noted that if Generac meets its 2023 guidance, shares could rally more than 30%.
FedEx did not say how many positions would be affected by the new layoffs. In mid-September, FedEx pulled its profit forecast and shares swooned more than 20% - the largest single-day drop in the company's 50-year history. But those numbers only tell part of the story because they exclude roughly FedEx 6,000 contractors and their workers, who handle most of the FedEx Ground's home delivery business. FedEx already has temporarily furloughed workers at its trucking division FedEx Freight as the pandemic-fueled e-commerce delivery bubble deflates and recession threatens, joining transportation-focused companies ranging from delivery upstart Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and trucking company C.H. Robinson Worldwide (CHRW.O) to freight broker Uber Freight and freight forwarding startup Flexport in announcing layoffs.
