Chicago had the highest Cost of Living Index score among 32 Midwestern cities. Of the 32 Midwestern urban areas examined, 29 fell below the national average. However, the vast majority of the 32 large Midwestern cities included in the study are cheaper than the national average. The Council for Community and Economic Research, or C2ER, released its quarterly Cost of Living Index in October. Below are the 32 Midwestern places in our analysis ranked by their indexes from C2ER.

Lee inducted Tucker into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October, and people are still talking about the dry delivery and killer comic timing of her speech. Lee has, Tucker added, “the best sense of humor known to man (or woman).”For the past four years, “Rockin’” has peaked at No. Because while Brenda Lee is a Christmas queen, she’s also so much more. Brenda Lee has stories. While still in her teens, Lee shared bills with Little Richard, Chubby Checker, Dusty Springfield — the list is seemingly endless.

Residents of cities across the Midwest will be hardest hit by home heating costs this winter. A new study ranked US cities based on costs in relation to incomes, energy efficiency, and more. The study ranked heating expenses in the 500 biggest cities in the country based on several factors, including electricity and heating fuel costs relative to average income, home energy-efficiency, and things like weather and average home size and age. Cleveland and Flint have particularly energy inefficient homes, while Independence and St. Joseph ranked high on energy costs, the study reported. During the hot months, places like Florida and Georgia become the most unaffordable when it comes to HVAC costs, the study noted.

Mr. Smith, a 78-year-old lifelong Hinsdale resident, said in an interview that he met Mr. Holt sometime in the 1970s. Eventually, Mr. Holt moved into a mobile home on a tract of land that Mr. Smith owned, and lived there for a time with a widow who owned the home. Mr. Holt did odd jobs for Mr. Smith over the years, like clearing brush, plowing snow and other maintenance tasks. This left Mr. Holt with a small nest egg that he invested in several mutual funds with a broker in Keene, N.H. One was what Mr. Smith described as a communications fund. In 2000 or so, Mr. Holt revealed his wealth to Mr. Smith.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has chosen a location for a new FBI headquarters in Maryland, people familiar with the selection said Wednesday as the suburban Washington location was selected over nearby Virginia following a sharp competition between the two states. Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore argued in recent months that building it there would be fast and save taxpayers $1 billion. He said a headquarters in the majority-Black Prince George’s County would meet equity goals raised by President Joe Biden. In recent months, the two other finalists were Springfield, Virginia, and Landover, Maryland.

Abortion rights at center of Ohio and Virginia elections

[1/2] Peter Range, the executive director of Ohio Right to Life, speaks to members of the Clark County Republican Party about the state's upcoming referendum on abortion rights, in Springfield, Ohio, U.S., October 26, 2023. In Mississippi, Republican Governor Tate Reeves is seeking another four-year term. Last year, abortion rights advocacy groups scored a series of victories by placing abortion-related referendums on the ballot, including in conservative states. In addition to Tuesday's amendment in Ohio that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, similar ballot measures are advancing in several states for 2024, including swing states Arizona and Florida. Anti-abortion forces have campaigned against the Ohio amendment as too extreme, while abortion rights groups have warned that rejecting it would pave the way for a stringent ban to take effect.

A recent jury verdict against the National Association of Realtors and large residential brokerages could upend the residential real estate industry. Here's what real estate agents, homebuyers and sellers need to know about potential changes in residential real estate economics. A bad time for bad news in real estateThe jury verdict comes at a time when many real estate agents are already feeling a pinch. At a time when home sales are already under pressure, "this lawsuit is just another punch in the gut for real estate franchises," said Bill Gross, a self-employed real estate broker associate in California with eXp Realty. Lawsuits focused on fees reinforce the general trend of trying to lower fees in the real estate market, Schipani said.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Critics of an Illinois program providing private school scholarships say there's no proof it improves academic achievement. Opponents say it's a drain on public education and want it ended. “They take money out of the public coffers for public education, the schools that receive this money are not accountable, some of them exclude students with special needs. It's not a good use of public dollars.”Bridget Shanahan, spokesperson for the Illinois Education Association, stood by the group's position. Nothing prevents the lawmakers from restarting the program during its spring session, but there would be a disruption in scholarships.

And yet, every day, people across America hire a real estate agent to help them sell a home. While state governments license real estate agents, NAR has an extensive code of ethics it expects members to adhere to. NAR and the brokerages have vowed to appeal the verdict, which means real estate commissions aren’t going anywhere immediately. Last month Redfin, an internet real estate company, left the association. The longer-term impact of the verdict may be that the pairing of buyer’s agent commission and seller’s agent commission will eventually be separated.

The majority recognized a difference between firearms for personal use and those the state law reserves for “trained professionals,” semiautomatic weapons, including the popular AR-15. Sullivan said it's likely that plaintiffs in one or more of the multiple cases consolidated in Friday's opinion would seek a U.S. Supreme Court review, where he predicted victory. At least eight other states and the District of Columbia have some sort of prohibition on semiautomatic weapons. The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the law on a 4-3 decision in August. And such semiautomatic weapons are the choice of many gun owners for sport shooting and hunting, they say.

(AP) — A Missouri prosecutor has dropped and refiled the murder case against Pamela Hupp, a killing that inspired a TV miniseries. Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wood charged Hupp with first-degree murder in July 2021, accusing her of killing her friend, Betsy Faria, a decade earlier. The original case had been moved on a change of venue to Springfield, about four hours away from Lincoln County. The Faria case was the subject of an NBC miniseries last year, “The Thing About Pam,” which starred Renee Zellweger. In that case, Hupp staged a fake kidnapping to divert attention from herself in a reinvestigation of the Faria killing, prosecutors said.
