These Oscar Snubs Still Rile Up Readers
  + stars: | 2024-03-09 | by ( Stephanie Goodman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When I asked readers, ahead of the Academy Awards on Sunday, if they were still mad about an Oscar snub, boy, did I get an earful. Technically a snub involves a film or an artist (or a song or any other possible contender) that was overlooked altogether at the awards. But a nominee losing to an unworthy rival was also fair game, and readers took both slights to heart. Here are the lightly edited responses:‘Saving Private Ryan’Steven Spielberg’s World War II drama lost best picture to the period romance “Shakespeare in Love” in 1999. Harvey Weinstein campaigned to get that Oscar.

Any filmmaker trying to draw meaning from the Holocaust onscreen faces potential pitfalls. Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a dark horse candidate for best picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday, avoids all of these traps and finds something new and profoundly unsettling to say about the Holocaust. “Zone” is ostensibly about the genocide of European Jewry, but its focus is not on the Jewish victims, who remain almost entirely offscreen. Rather, Mr. Glazer exposes the perpetrators to the scrutiny of the audience’s gaze. “Zone” depicts the life of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, and his family at their handsome estate just outside the walls of the death camp.

Tesla's Cybertruck isn't the kind of car that goes unnoticed. The Cybertruck isn't your average pickupMusk has been hyping up the Cybertruck since it was announced in 2019. It will mean fundamentally reevaluating our conception of free will and human agency — and reckoning with our tortured relationship with shame. Many health plans have refused to cover GLP-1s for weight loss , citing limited approval from the Food and Drug Administration. I don't know when I first became overweight, but I remember the moment I was taught to be ashamed of it. Though one of the most potent and long-running (or at least long-stomping) forces in movies, Godzilla has never before rubbed elbows at the Academy Awards. At the Oscar luncheon, Steven Spielberg warmly greeted Yamazaki and told him he had seen “Godzilla Minus One” three times. But “Godzilla Minus One” returns to the essential nature of Godzilla as a sober symbol of nuclear holocaust and atomic trauma. My intent was to put a spotlight on what Godzilla represented.”In “Godzilla Minus One,” just as WWII is ending, Godzilla is growing. But unlike more broadly blockbuster-styled Godzilla films, “Godzilla Minus One” is rigorously rooted in a Japanese perspective.

PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — Christian Bale broke ground Wednesday on a project he’s been pursuing for 16 years -- the building of a dozen homes and a community center in Los Angeles County intended to keep siblings in foster care together. That was around 2008, the time of “The Dark Knight,” when his now college-age daughter was 3 years old. The 12 homes, anchored by the community center, are set to be finished in April of 2025. “It’s something that is incredibly satisfying for me, and I want to be involved every step of the way,” Bale said. “Maybe this is the first one, and maybe this is the only one, and that would be great.

CNN —The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were revealed last week and – as they so often do – caused quite a stir. Co-written and directed by Triet, “Anatomy of a Fall” is nominated for five Oscars this year in total, including for best original screenplay and best picture. That gives Williams more Academy Award nominations than any other living person. According to the Academy, the late Walt Disney holds the overall record of career nominations, with a grand total of 59. Still, it seemed to be a role destined for Brooks, who received a Tony Award nomination in 2016 for playing the same character in the Broadway revival of the musical.

Since the Biden campaign's launch, nearly 1 million supporters have made more than 2.3 million contributions, and 97% of all its fourth-quarter 2023 donations were under $200, with the average contribution totaling $41.88, it announced. Biden's campaign said December was his strongest fundraising month to date, exceeding a record it said was previously set in November. That helped last year's final quarter outpace the period from July through September, when Biden and his party reported raising $71-plus million. The campaign said the president has held 110 fundraisers since launching, including 39 in last year's fourth quarter alone. Even with so much travel focused on fundraising, however, Biden campaign officials had tried to manage expectations.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is making a big push to raise money for his reelection effort before the end of the year, appearing at seven events through next Monday — with more to come. Biden will also attend a fundraiser Wednesday near the White House and another one on Monday in Philadelphia. One of the Boston events, titled “You've Got a Friend in Joe,” is billed as an “evening concert" with Taylor and Biden. Taylor, the winner of six Grammy Awards, helped kick off a White House event in 2022 celebrating the Inflation Reduction Act, a climate and health care bill that Biden signed into law. As of the last fundraising reporting deadline at the end of September, Biden and his party reported $91 million cash on hand.

“If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running,” he said, saying Democrats “cannot let him win.”The comment, made during a fundraiser at a private home outside Boston, offered perhaps the starkest rationale to date for Biden’s reelection decision-making. The remark suggested Biden may not have sought a second term if Trump had not decided to run again. Biden took on Trump directly in the first of those fundraisers, warning that his predecessor is “telling us what he’s going to do. Two other events in the area will bring in millions more for Biden’s campaign war chest. With its significant early investment, Biden’s reelection effort has targeted key media markets in familiar battleground states – Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada.

With a cash haul from elite party donors expected to reach into the millions, the Los Angeles event could help ease concerns among Democrats about Biden's reelection chances. As of the last fundraising reporting deadline at the end of September, Biden and his party reported $91 million cash on hand. CNN —In hindsight, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star is Born” served as the commercial tune-up that paved the way for “Maestro,” as both films deal with the price of art as well as loving an artist. Before getting to the movie itself, a word about the controversy it triggered over the prosthetic nose that Cooper donned to better resemble his Jewish character. Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper in "Maestro," which Cooper also directed. Still, watching Cooper and Mulligan portray their characters across decades, it’s hard not to be impressed, while nurturing a greater appreciation for why Cooper found Bernstein’s contributions and complications deserving of such a tribute. Joaquin Phoenix Photo: AppleTV+Joaquin Phoenix finds Napoleon morose, anguished, petulant and a bit childlike, which reminds me that although I enjoyed his morose, anguished, petulant and a bit childlike performance as the Joker, his decision to play Jesus Christ as morose, anguished, petulant and a bit childlike, in 2019’s little-seen “ Mary Magdalene ,” felt a bit off. Mr. Phoenix even appeared morose, etc. (Being 49, Mr. Phoenix is too old for all but the final moments.) Most of the movie is a vaguely comical swipe at Napoleon in domestic life—an awkward lover, a jealous husband, an inveterate complainer, and in sum an annoying twerp. Mr. Phoenix’s Napoleon could never have commanded so much as a squadron of the Salvation Army, and though the movie is sprinkled with a few reasonably hearty battle scenes, overall it’s something like Mr. Scott’s Waterloo.
