You'll need to make over $200,000 annually to afford a home in some California cities, a recent National Association of Realtors report reveals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, cities that require the highest income are large urban coastal hubs where homes tend to be more expensive. In California, homes are both desirable and scarce, which is why the state has some of the highest home prices in the U.S. Here are the 11 metro areas where households need to earn over $200,000 to afford a median-priced home. Similarly, homes in smaller rust belt and rural cities are much cheaper compared with some cities in California.

The San Diego Zoo sent its pandas home in 2019 and the last bear at the Memphis, Tennessee, zoo went home earlier this year. Whatever the reason, San Diego Zoo officials were hopeful. "It is a moment with some heartbreak in it,” National Zoo Director Brandie Smith said at the time. The San Diego Zoo has been panda-less for four years and may need to upgrade or refurbish its facilities. The National Zoo had announced plans to renovate its panda house and outdoor enclosure, but the timing on those plans is unclear.

Old or vacant strip malls offer a promising opportunity to create much-needed new housing. A new report found that converting 10% of strip malls into housing could create 700,000 new homes. Urban planners and developers across the country are pushing a fix for both: converting strip malls into housing. But when it comes to strip mall conversions, finding the right property to redevelop is the bigger challenge. And older strip malls are often costlier to maintain than to tear down and redevelop.

The seasonal phenomenon occurs when dry desert air blows toward the ocean, creating a fire hazard in Southern California. Some 1,220 homes and 4,270 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders, with another 1,136 homes and 3,976 residents under evacuation warnings, Cal Fire spokesperson Thomas Shoots said. KFC is losing ground to Popeyes, according to a Barclays report. KFC and Popeyes are both logging more than $5 billion a year in sales, according to Technomic's latest Top 500 report. But Popeyes, which is expanding rapidly across the US, is selling food with fewer locations in the US compared to KFC, according to Technomic. The chicken served at KFC was so greasy, I had to take Tums to relieve my indigestion.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Federal officials said Wednesday that conditions have improved on the Colorado River to the point that a plan by California, Arizona and Nevada to voluntarily reduce water use should help keep the river basin on stable footing for the next few years. The states failed to reach a consensus on cuts, and the federal government did not end up forcing any. The threat of those two options finally forced the three states to reach their own voluntary plan for how to reduce their use of the river's water. Already, the three states have lowered their water use, said Tom Buschatzke, director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the state’s representative on Colorado River issues. Now, the states can turn their attention to a new long-term agreement for how to share the river’s water beyond 2026.

In decisions in 2022, U.S. District Court Judge David Carter in Santa Ana ordered certain emails to be turned over, including those related to court efforts by Trump and Eastman to delay congressional certification of Biden's victory. Carter ruled that Trump and Eastman had "more likely than not" committed a crime in trying to obstruct Congress. SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A judge on Wednesday halted a Southern California school district from requiring parents to be notified if their children change their gender identification or pronouns at school. Bonta argues the policy will forcibly out transgender students in violation of their privacy rights and threaten their well-being. Chino Valley contends the policy seeks to involve parents so they can provide support their children need. He also questioned whether elementary school students as young as 4 and 5 years old should be treated the same as high school teens involved in confidential counseling. He then worked with school board members and the California Family Council to draft the policy that was voted on in Chino Valley.

CNN —The wildfires in Maui spread swiftly and turned deadly, stunning local officials who were quickly overwhelmed. Fueled by a combination of strong winds and dry conditions – and complicated by the island’s geography – the fires have killed at least 36 people. Moderate drought covers more than one-third of Maui, with some areas experiencing severe drought, according to the US Drought Monitor. Dried-out land and vegetation can provide fuel for wildfires, which then can swiftly turn deadly if strong winds help fan the flames toward communities. “These strong winds coupled with low humidity levels are producing dangerous fire weather conditions” through Wednesday afternoon, the weather service said.

Why cities want to ban new drive-thrus

Magnets of traffic and congestion, drive-thrus discourage walking, public transit use and visits to neighboring businesses. A host of cities and regions want the sprawl to stop: Atlanta lawmakers will vote this summer on whether to ban new drive-thrus in the popular Beltline area. Minneapolis; Fair Haven, New Jersey; Creve Coeur, Missouri; Orchard Park, New York, and other cities have banned new drive-thrus in recent years. Experts say pedestrian safety can be improved by tightly managing access along arterial roads and locating drive-thrus away from them. Cities push backAtlanta City Councilman Jason Dozier proposed a bill this year to block new drive-thrus around the Atlanta Beltline, a pedestrian trail along a 22-mile railroad corridor.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 (Reuters) - BTC Power will add Tesla's (TSLA.O) standard to its electric vehicle chargers next year, its chief executive told Reuters on Tuesday, days after Ford (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N) sent shockwaves through the industry by adopting the technology.
