Editor’s Note: This is a version of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. London CNN —Britain’s King Charles III will lead members of the royal family at the Easter Sunday church service this weekend, marking his most significant appearance since his cancer diagnosis last month. Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, will be joined by several other Windsors for the Easter Mattins Service at St. George’s Chapel within the grounds of Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace confirmed earlier this week. The event is a firm fixture in the royal calendar and is usually attended by many family members who are often seen walking to church together on Easter Sunday. As such, the number of family members gathering for the traditional service is expected to be smaller than normal to minimize the risks associated with larger crowds.

London CNN —King Charles III gave public remarks for Maundy Thursday, addressing the importance of acts of friendship, following his and Catherine, Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnoses. The King’s audio message — which was played at the annual Royal Maundy service at Worcester Cathedral in England on Thursday — were his first public comments since Catherine revealed she was undergoing chemotherapy. Charles, who is also currently undergoing treatment for cancer, did not attend the service, leaving his wife, Queen Camilla, to hand out traditional Maundy gifts on his behalf. The King is, however, expected to attend church on Easter Sunday alongside his wife, marking his most significant public appearance since his diagnosis. It is an ancient ceremony that dates back to 600 A.D. and marks how Jesus washed the feet of disciples at the Last Supper.

London CNN —The Prince and Princess of Wales expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received from the public after Catherine, Princess of Wales, announced she has cancer. “The Prince and Princess are both enormously touched by the kind messages from people here in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world in response to Her Royal Highness’ message. The princess, known as Kate, described her diagnosis as a “huge shock” in a video statement released on social media. The news comes two months after she stepped away from public life following what Kensington Palace said at the time was surgery for a non-cancerous abdominal condition. Kensington Palace is not expected to reveal any further medical details such as the type of cancer or what stage it is.

CNN —The public absence of Catherine, Princess of Wales, has grown from a niche royal watcher concern to an international punchline in a matter of weeks. Droves of amateur detectives have crafted timelines and deep dives into the princess’ movements over the last few months, combining real concern with outlandish conspiracy. The uproar, the theories, the analyses, the jokes and, yes, the serious concern — they all show the multitude of ways people interact with and view the royal family. “Not [the royal family] specifically, just anyone in that kind of position.”Catherine, Princess Of Wales is seen during the opening of Evelina London's new children's day surgery unit on December 5, 2023 in London, England. The photograph was released by Kensington Palace early Sunday on the couple’s official social media accounts, to mark Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day,” she wrote before ending her post with a “C” for Catherine. This year’s Mother’s Day photograph was also the first proper sighting of the princess since Christmas Day. Questions about the Mother’s Day image first emerged on social media. In the past, the family’s amateur photographs have been well received when posted on social media.

CNN —The first official photograph of Catherine, Princess of Wales, since she underwent abdominal surgery in January has been released by her and her husband, William, Prince of Wales. Kate is seen seated outside, surrounded by her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, in the photo credited to the Prince of Wales. The 42-year-old, who is recovering from surgery at home in Windsor, is unlikely to return to public duties until Easter, Kensington Palace said in January. The palace did not reveal what her surgery was for, but said that it was noncancerous. Editor’s Note: This is a version of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. CNN —Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has said she experienced “cruel” online bullying and abuse, the “bulk” of which occurred during her pregnancies. The duchess gave birth to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, her first child with husband Prince Harry, on May 6, 2019. In March 2019, the British royal family royal told social media users to show “courtesy, kindness and respect” when interacting with its online posts, after repeated cases of online abuse directed at Meghan and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. This followed Kensington Palace asking social media firms for help in combating the boom in abuse, which included sexist and racist comments.

London CNN —Speculation over when Catherine, Princess of Wales will return to official royal duties continues this week after expectations were raised by an unlikely source: the British Army. Tickets were advertised to the public with appearances from both 42-year-old Kate and King Charles III on June 8 and 15, respectively. Aaron Chown/AFP/Getty ImagesThe palace, which handles the princess’ diary, had not yet confirmed if she would be reviewing the Irish Guards. CNN decided not to publish the paparazzi shot when it began to circulate on social media on Monday. The existence of the photograph did, however, quash some of the wilder rumors and conspiracy theories circulating recently on social media about the princess’ health and whereabouts.

After a week of often hysterical speculation about her well-being, there were suddenly two plausible pieces of evidence that Catherine, Princess of Wales, was on the mend: a photo of her in a car driven by her mother and a confirmation by the British Army that she would attend a military ceremony in June. But as with almost everything surrounding the health of Prince William’s 42-year-old wife in recent weeks, any sense of certainty quickly melted away. A palace official said on Tuesday that the army had jumped the gun in announcing Catherine’s participation in Trooping the Color, an annual ritual that celebrates the birthday of the sovereign. And while British newspapers reported the existence of paparazzi shots, purportedly of Catherine, that were posted on social media on Monday, none of them published the images. At the end of another hothouse news cycle, consumers of royal news were back where they started: in the dark about the princess, who had abdominal surgery in January and has not been seen during her lengthy convalescence.

Editor’s Note: This is a version of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. William, a source told CNN, had called the Greek royal family to let them know of his last-minute change of plans. Many saw the prince’s recent return to royal duties as a signal that the prognosis in the Wales household was improving quickly. If the role of monarchy is presence, continuity and unity, it was a stark visual seeing the royal family enter the chapel without several key senior faces among them. It’s worth emphasizing that the royal source told CNN that Kate “continues to be doing well” in her recovery.

London CNN —Thomas Kingston, the financier husband of Lady Gabriella Kingston, has died suddenly at the age of 45, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday. Kingston married into Britain’s most famous family in 2019, tying the knot with Lady Gabriella in a lavish ceremony at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Lady Gabriella, who is the King’s second cousin, is not a working member of the royal family. Her parents, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, had attended a memorial service for the late King Constantine II of Greece with other members of the British royal family earlier Tuesday, before the announcement of Kingston’s death. However, it is understood that the Prince of Wales’ absence was not connected to the news of Kingston’s death.

London CNN —Prince William will miss a memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece because of a personal matter, a royal source has told CNN. The Prince of Wales, 41, had been expected to attend the remembrance event at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. King Charles III is also absent from the service as he continues his treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. After a military coup in 1967, Constantine and his family fled to Rome, and the military regime appointed a regent to take his place. The Greek monarchy was abolished on June 1, 1973, when the military regime proclaimed the country a republic – a decision that was backed by a subsequent referendum.

CNN —A new official portrait of King Charles III that will hang in public buildings in the United Kingdom has been unveiled. Public bodies such as courts, schools and councils can request free oak-framed copies of the portrait, which was taken by photographer Hugo Burnand. British photographer Burnand has long held close ties to the royal family, taking official pictures at Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation. He also took the official photos for both Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005, and William and Catherine’s wedding in 2011. “Official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II are currently on display in many public institutions, and the offering of the new official portrait of King Charles III will enable organisations across the UK to carry on that tradition,” the UK Cabinet Office said in a press statement last year.
