New York CNN —A year ago, America’s stores declared a shoplifting epidemic. Target also closed nine stores, saying “theft and organized retail crime” threatened worker and customer safety and made business unsustainable. Many retailers’ merchandise losses have stabilized or improved, and chains have publicly dialed back their rhetoric. Their shrink rate — lost inventory as a percentage of sales — is their best estimate for items that go missing. The shoplifting rate in the first half of 2024 was also 10% higher than in the first half of 2019.

Months after the beef between rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake seemingly reached a conclusion, Lamar has dropped a new track. Lamar posted an untitled song to his Instagram Reels without a caption on Tuesday evening. Lamar similarly released one of his diss tracks against Drake, “6:16 in L.A.,” on Instagram only. Lamar was embroiled in a monthslong feud with Drake that produced nine diss tracks between the two rappers. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was one of the top songs of the summer, according to the outlet’s summer songs chart.

Fyre Festival is set to return for round two next spring, this time on a privately owned island off Mexico. McFarland said he hopes to gather 3,000 people for Fyre Fest II, scheduled for April 25-28. Whereas he gave himself only six months from the idea for the first Fyre Fest to its attempted execution, McFarland said, he has spent a full year working on Fyre Fest II, with more than seven months to go. Economists were expecting a net gain of 160,000 jobs and for the unemployment rate to fall to 4.2%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. With inflation pretty much tamed and moderating as expected, the Federal Reserve has turned its focus to the labor market (the other part of its dual mandate). Job growth has been slowing, but there were indications that the labor market was weakening under the weight of 23-year-high interest rates. A ‘place of stability’July’s shockingly weak jobs report stoked fears that the jobs market was collapsing, potentially taking the economy into a downturn. And while a rate cut is coming, the jury is still out on the exact size of that move.

Dell and Palantir both jumped about 7% in extended trading Friday after S&P Global announced that the companies would join the S&P 500 index. Software maker Palantir will take the place of American Airlines , and Dell is replacing Etsy , according to a statement. Dell told investors Aug. 29 that it saw $3.2 billion in AI server demand in the quarter ended Aug. 2, up 23% from the prior quarter. Palantir has a market cap of over $67 billion, while Dell is valued at over $72 billion. In an early Friday email, the Bank of America trading desk named Workday among its top candidates for S&P inclusion, alongside Palantir.
