The Johannesburg-based precious metals producer is on the shortlist of potential buyers for the copper mines owned by a unit of the Zambian government. The Chinese company has a presence in copper mining and would be joining Sibanye as an investment partner, Froneman said. The Chinese investor could help derisk the investment at Mopani, Froneman said. "They are an investment partner but technically they understand the copper business and smelting, so it's managing risk," he said. The Mopani assets require significant investment but spending would be spread over a number of years, Froneman said.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File photoPARIS, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Rothschild & Co (ROTH.PA), the Paris-listed investment bank being taken private by its owners, reported on Thursday a 10% fall in first-half sales, driven by a plunge in dealmaking activity. Rothschild said its first-half net income, group share, nearly halved from a year earlier to 128 million euros. In a call with reporters, Managing Partner Francois Perol confirmed the investment bank expected net income to more than halve this year due to the sharp fall in dealmaking. He said the consortium that seeks to take the company private already owned more than 80% of the shares following the buyout offer valuing Rothschild at 3.7 billion euros. Concordia, the bank's controlling shareholder and holding company of the Rothschild family, was joined by three of France's wealthiest families in the take-private transaction.

Artist-Designed Party Hats, and How to Recreate Them
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( Coco Romack | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In the United States, party hats — those ubiquitous, cone-shaped signifiers of children’s birthdays and summer picnics — have their roots in a less celebratory phenomenon: the pointed dunce caps used as disciplinary tools in schools throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s a reminder that even the most unassuming objects can have complex meanings — something that artists, several of whom have turned to party attire for inspiration, have long known. The students of the Bauhaus, the influential German design academy founded in 1919, took their costume parties as seriously as their studies, dressing up as monstrous creatures and mechanical humanoids. And in 1972, the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí designed several fantastical ensembles for the infamous Surrealist Ball, a lavish gathering held at the French estate of the baroness Marie-Hélène de Rothschild. From there, imaginations ran free, yielding headdresses that resemble, among other things, a rainbow-colored palm tree, a coral reef and an otherworldly drinking helmet.

The RTA is targeting the first of the two potential public share sales, in the Dubai Taxi Corporation, to take place around December or January, said the sources, declining to be named as the matter is not public. It echoes 1,000 years of antisemitic conspiracy theories that Jews are responsible for, yet somehow immune to, plagues and disease – beliefs that led to actual Jews being murdered by angry mobs. No, of course, we’re in Washington, DC, where politics dictates how antisemitism is, or isn’t, tolerated by those with something to gain from it. Really, it was only a matter of time before RFK Jr. stumbled into overt antisemitism. Without exaggeration, many of my Jewish friends have remarked that this mainstreaming of antisemitism reminds them of 1930s Germany. There is no equivalence between a strident anti-Israel remark and the resurrection of age-old antisemitic conspiracy theories.

With the second half of the year now underway, investors may want to take another look at their fixed income portfolio. High yields have been a boon to income investors, as the Federal Reserve increased interest rates over the past year. "For more of our clients, we're looking to have the fixed income of the portfolio provide lower correlation and income," he said. Greg Wilensky, head of U.S. fixed income at Janus Henderson Investors, generally prefers securitized assets such as asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities. CNN —Jane Birkin, the British singer and actress who found fame in France, has died aged 76, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported Sunday, citing its sources. She was the inspiration for the famous Birkin bag by French luxury house Hermes. Gainsbourg went on to write “Je t’aime… moi non plus” for Birkin and the song became an international hit that same year. She also managed to carve out a prolific career in the world of music, releasing several records in the French language. Dumas was true to his word and the Birkin bag was introduced in 1984.

July 6 (Reuters) - Concordia said on Thursday it had acquired all the shares it was permitted to acquire of Rothschild & Co (ROTH.PA), paving the way for the Rothschild family's holding company to open an offer to take the investment bank private. Concordia said it bought 8.18 million shares of Rothschild at 46.60 euros per share. The opening of an offer to delist the bank will take place following a clearance decision from the French market regulator AMF. The Rothschild family said in February it was seeking to take the bank private. The bank, led by Alexandre de Rothschild, said total group revenue over the first three months of 2023 fell to 606.2 million euros ($667.30 million) from 675.3 million euros in 2022.

Representatives for Hermes and Rothschild did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the decision. Hermes said in a filing in March that Rothschild continued to market his NFTs after the jury's verdict. Rothschild told the court that Hermes' request went "far beyond what is appropriate in a case, like this one, that involves artistic expression." Rakoff largely granted Hermes' request, but decided not to order Rothschild to transfer the tokens out of an "abundance of caution" for 1st Amendment concerns. The case is Hermes International v. The Titanic Truthers of TikTok

Mr. Morgan, whose White Star Line owned the Titanic, figures prominently in Titanic lore. (In some tellings, TikTok creators have recast the villains as the wealthy Rothschild family or even the Catholic order of the Jesuits.) Evidence suggests that Mr. Morgan failed to make his date with the Titanic because he was dealing with an unexpected situation involving his European art collection. The consensus, though, is this: The Titanic sank in a terrible accident and many people died. “On a grand scale, the study of history keeps you from repeating the mistakes that were made in the past and, continually, moving forward,” said Mr. Stephenson, who is now the executive director of the USS Kidd Veterans Museum.

Stellantis SPAC deal has suitably decent airbags
  + stars: | 2023-06-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, June 12 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Carmakers are in a race to lock in battery metals like lithium. For shareholders, the risk is that they tie up capital in expensive supply deals, or mines in far-flung locations with poor governance. Stellantis’s (STLAM.MI) investment in a London-based special purpose acquisition company deal looks like a neat fix to those challenges. In a complex deal, halfway between an IPO and a SPAC takeover, it will buy the Serrote and Santa Rita mines in east Brazil for $1.1 billion. Besides the original SPAC investors, the bulk of that will likely come from a public offering, and new anchor investors like Stellantis.
