LONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - British meal delivery company Deliveroo (ROO.L) said it achieved breakeven in adjusted earnings in the second half, boosting its margin for the year to a better-than-expected -1%, and it expected continued improvement in 2023. Founder and chief executive Will Shu said Deliveroo had delivered "significant improvements in profitability whilst also still delivering growth in a difficult macroeconomic environment". The loss-making company, which pulled out of Australia and the Netherlands in 2022, had previously expected its earnings margin for the year to be between -1.2% and -1.5%. The company, which competes with Just Eat Takeaway (TKWY.AS) and Uber Eats, will report its 2022 results on March 16. Just Eat delivers right takeaway orders, finally
  + stars: | 2023-01-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Jan 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Food delivery boss Jitse Groen has started the new year with a glimpse of hope. Pleasing investors after a round of missteps, the Dutch company also forecast a higher-than-expected EBITDA of 225 million euros this year. The 5.6 billion euro ($6 billion) group’s results point to a brighter future than what Just Eat experienced in 2022. Less than a year after acquiring U.S. rival Grubhub, Groen made a U-turn by putting it up for sale and writing down the value of the division by 3 billion euros. All this happened while investors started to lose faith in the high-growth low-profit food delivery sector: Just Eat Takeaway lost 60% of its market value last year.
SummarySummary Companies STOXX 600 up 0.1%Jan 11 (Reuters) - European shares edged up on Wednesday, lifted by Bayer and LVMH, while optimism over reopening in China and hopes of less aggressive U.S. interest rate hikes aided the sentiment. The pan-regional STOXX 600 (.STOXX) gained 0.1% by 0818 GMT. Signs of slowing wage inflation last week had boosted bets of a less aggressive tightening by the Fed and the European Central Bank. Energy stocks (.SXEP) advanced 1.0%, while miners (.SXPP) gained 1.7%, as commodity prices rose on optimism over top consumer China's reopening. Bayer (BAYGn.DE) rose 2.1% after Bloomberg reported that activist investor Bluebell is pushing for a breakup of the German pharmaceutical company.

DoorDash cuts 1,250 jobs to control ballooning costs

Nov 30 (Reuters) - DoorDash Inc (DASH.N) said on Wednesday it was cutting about 1,250 jobs, or 6% of its total workforce, as the food-delivery company looks to keep a lid on costs to cope with a slowdown in demand. As a result, operating expenses grew quickly," Chief Executive Tony Xu said in a memo to employees that was posted on the company's website. "Given how quickly we hired, our operating expenses - if left unabated - would continue to outgrow our revenue." read moreWhile DoorDash's Xu reiterated that the business has been more resilient compared with other e-commerce companies, he said reducing non-headcount operating expenses "wouldn't close the gap." DoorDash, which closed an all-stock deal this year with Wolt, has total headcount of about 20,000.

SINGAPORE, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Singapore will extend work injury insurance and pension coverage to food delivery and ride-hailing workers under proposed legislative changes that it aims to implement as early as late 2024, the Manpower Ministry said. The new rules will affect about 73,000 workers who deliver food or drive passengers for companies such as Grab (GRAB.O) , Gojek (GOTO.JK), Deliveroo (ROO.L) and Delivery Hero's (DHER.DE) Foodpanda. Workers would gain coverage under the national pension system, which collects contributions from both workers and companies, and receive work injury insurance covering medical expenses, income loss, and lump sum compensation for permanent disability or death. Gig workers would not, however, be considered full-time employees entitled to paid leave and other benefits. On Monday, the global 'Reef Brigades' plan came closer to reality when it bought an insurance policy on behalf of the state of Hawaii, the first U.S. coral insurance contract, which will provide funds for repair work, building on similar policies taken out in the Caribbean. Apart from being a precious nursery for fish, coral reefs that fringe developed coastlines can limit flooding by providing a barrier against ocean storm surges, meaning insurers have every interest in protecting them. For the premium of $110,000 in Hawaii's contract announced on Monday, that state will get up to $2 million of insurance protection for its coral reefs until the end of December 2023. Just offshore from some of the country's most famous Mayan ruins, local tourism businesses and the government bought an insurance policy to cover their share of the Mesoamerican Reef. Willis Towers Watson, which worked on the MAR Fund policy and the Hawaii policy, said it is actively working on a coral reef policy for Fiji, and policies for coral reef bleaching, run-off due to excessive rainfall, and lost fishing days due to climate change-induced storms.

Tropical Storm Lisa strengthened Tuesday as it pushed across the western Caribbean south of the Cayman Islands and was forecast to make landfall, likely as a hurricane, in Central America as early as Wednesday. And Mexico was also preparing as Lisa was forecast to strengthen in warm tropical waters and strike Belize late Wednesday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Lisa had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was moving west at 15 mph. A hurricane warning was in effect for Roatan and the other Bay Islands of Roatan, and Guatemala declared a warning for its entire Caribbean coast. Hurricane expert Philip Klotzbach, a Colorado State University meteorologist, tweeted that Lisa would be the first hurricane to make landfall in Belize during November since 1942.

Nov 2 (Reuters) - Hurricane Lisa will strike coastal Belize Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicted, edging very close to the country's barrier reef before it moves across northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico. Weather models show Lisa's heavy rains and dangerous winds likely targeting some top tourist destinations in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico's Caribbean-facing Yucatan Peninsula, dotted by beach resorts, pristine coral reefs and Mayan ruins. The Category 1 hurricane was about 35 miles (60 km) east-southeast of Belize City, a major port, packing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour (130 km per hour), the Miami-based NHC said in a bulletin. Belize's national emergency organization said borders would close at 2 p.m. (2000 GMT), with ports and airports shuttering. President Alejandro Giammattei of neighboring Guatemala told a news conference food rations were being sent to vulnerable areas.

BELIZE CITY, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Hurricane Lisa bore down on Belize on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported in a bulletin, predicting it will later move across the jungles of northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico. Weather models show Lisa's heavy rainfall and powerful winds will likely target tourist destinations in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico's Caribbean-facing Yucatan Peninsula, dotted by beach resorts, pristine coral reefs and Mayan ruins. SummarySummary Companies Sees sales growth at 4-8%, from previous range of 4-12%Upgrades adjusted earnings margin forecastShares rise 4%LONDON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - British food delivery company Deliveroo (ROO.L) warned sales growth would be at the lower end of its previous guidance, as households cut back on take-aways due to rising prices. Despite the worsening outlook, Deliveroo, which competes with Just Eat Takeaway (TKWY.AS) and Uber Eats (UBER.N), also slightly upgraded its adjusted earnings (EBITDA) margin guidance on Friday, helped by lower marketing spend. The group is aiming for adjusted earnings (EBITDA) breakeven in late 2023 to early 2024 and said that it was confident it could adapt to the worsening economic outlook where consumers are grappling with higher food and energy bills. In its biggest UK and Ireland market, Deliveroo posted GTV growth of 11%, boosted by the addition of McDonalds to its offering, while its performance in its international markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific dragged. Deliveroo announced on Wednesday it would pull out of the Netherlands on Nov. 30 after it failed to gain sufficient local market share.

AMSTERDAM, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Deliveroo (ROO.L), the meals ordering company, said it would halt operations in the Netherlands as of Nov. 30. "After consulting with employees and drivers, Deliveroo has established that reaching and keeping a top market position in the Netherlands would require unreasonable investment with an uncertain long term return," the company said in a statement. Deliveroo had said in August it was considering the move, given the Dutch market only accounted for a small amount of its operations and it had failed to gain sufficient local market share. The London Natural History Museum announced the 2022 winners of its Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. The winning photos include a frenzied ball of bees, a dancing sea star, and the brushy mouth of a whale. The cactus bees, like most other bees, are endangered by habitat loss, pesticides, and the changing climate. The resulting photo, above, won the Grand Title in this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, which is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London each year. As clouds of sea-star sperm and eggs filled the water, photographer Tony Wu captured this otherwordly invertebrate in the throes of its dance.
