Bernstein said he is hopeful “that as we remove lead pipes, we’re going to see the numbers continue to fall. “CDC’s work was used in other cities with elevated water lead levels to dampen citizen concerns,” the congressional report said. Joe Cotruvo, a former director of the Drinking Water Standards Division at EPA, said the existing regulations work and should be credited with significantly reducing lead in drinking water, they just aren’t properly enforced. Lead pipes in both cities were rapidly removed and lead levels dropped.

Slumping demand and surging mortgage rates are likely to lead to the slowest period for housing sales in 30 years, according to Goldman Sachs. Lurking over all the housing market, though, has been the surge in mortgage rates that have come along with the Federal Reserve's efforts to bring down inflation . Mortgage rates have risen in tandem, rocketing from around 3.8% when the Fed started tightening to more than 7.6% nationally now, according to Freddie Mac data. "We expect this 'lock-in' effect to push existing home sales even lower in the coming months and to limit any rebound next year," Walker wrote. After a robust period in the third quarter, Goldman and most of Wall Street expects GDP growth to slow considerably.

Parker was the Republican nominee for governor in 1999, and lost a close race to Democrat Ronnie Musgrove, who was lieutenant governor. The 1999 governor's race had to be decided in the Mississippi House because neither Musgrove nor Parker fulfilled the two requirements to win the race, which also had two little-known candidates. The Chesapeake cowboys rode into St. Michael’s, Md., on a steamy Sunday in August, and the air smelled like crab seasoning and diesel exhaust, with a dash of light beer and lime. A couple thousand spectators had gathered in the Colonial-era tourist town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, about 80 miles east of Washington, D.C., to watch the cowboys square off in a competition unique to the Chesapeake Bay: boat docking. They stood elbow to elbow on a lighthouse deck. A few brave onlookers balanced, precariously, atop dock pilings without spilling their drinks. played a love song to “long-neck, ice- cold beer.”“It’s redneck like NASCAR, just on the water,” one competitor, Ronnie Reiss, known as “Reissy Cup,” said on his boat, the May Worm.

A street gang in Milwaukee allegedly stole millions of dollars in Covid-19 pandemic relief money that was then used to carry out a murder and purchase guns and drugs, among other items, according to a federal indictment. The indictment was returned by a grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and unsealed in May. The alleged leader of the gang, Ronnell Bowman, and another defendant, Ronnie Jackson, were charged with the April 2021 killing of an individual named only as N.B. The fraud methods Bowman allegedly taught other gang members resulted in the theft of millions of dollars of Covid relief money, Kwaterski told the judge during the hearing. The indictment alleges that the "Wild 100s" filed fraudulent claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance in California and several other states.
