Former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum speaks after being named presidential candidate of the ruling Morena party for next year's presidential election in Mexico City on September 6, 2023. Voters in Mexico are participating in the country's largest election ever — casting votes Sunday to fill more than 20,000 local, state and federal positions and almost certainly elect their first female president. But rampant violence has marred the road toward one of the most consequential elections in Mexico's history. Violence against political figures has also persisted throughout this election cycle, resulting in a 150% increase in the number of victims of political violence since 2021, according to an analysis from Integralia, a public affairs consulting firm that researches political risk and other issues in Mexico. These have greatly dismayed Mexican voters, leading most of them to cite security as a top issue of concern.

However, during the renovation, we eventually went over budget and realized we should have done a few things differently. However, the unexpected cost of installing a new circuit board and wiring for the range cooker made us reluctant to add anything else to our tab. South Korea sent out a government emergency disaster alert urging citizens to refrain from touching the objects and to report any more incidents to the military. South Korea's defense ministry told NBC News that no human waste was found, but said that North Korea did send human waste via balloon in 2016. According to the Yonhap news agency, this is the largest number of balloons from North Korea since similar incidents between 2016 and 2018. "These acts by North Korea violate international law and threaten our people's safety," said South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, urging North Korea to cease its "inhumane and vulgar behaviors" immediately. Three-quarters of the way through a grueling 10-day hospital stay for my older daughter, Orli, the cookbook author Joan Nathan called me from hospital reception. I met Joan in the hospital atrium. Joan told me about a time, decades earlier, when her own daughter, herself now a mother, was a baby being treated in this hospital. I couldn’t stay to hear more; every moment away from Orli was one I couldn’t retrieve. In Orli’s room I set the challah down on a paper plate and took a photo.

CNN —Chemical toxins are everywhere — in our water, food, air and soil. Children born to European mothers exposed to four families of chemicals that disrupt the body’s endocrine (hormone) system had elevated levels of metabolic syndrome at ages 6 to 11. Metabolic syndrome can include obesity, elevated blood pressure, and abnormally high cholesterol and insulin resistance, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is typically associated with adult cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke, but the growing epidemic of childhood obesity has seen symptoms appearing in kids at younger and younger ages. Having metabolic syndrome as a child is highly predictive of chronic disease as an adult, experts say.
