Read previewThe heavily armored M1 Abrams tank is widely regarded as one of the best and toughest tanks in Ukraine today, but even it can't ride out without cages to shield it from drones. Main battle tanks often sport large, welded "cope cages" to stop exploding drones from taking them out. pic.twitter.com/gdw5LyGENi — OSINTtechnical (@Osinttechnical) May 24, 2024Photos shared online last month showed a US-supplied M1A1 Abrams tank with improvised cages. Ukraine's new Abrams tank cage looks like it could be more purposefully designed to add another layer of protection and potentially increase the survivability of the crew. Now, learning from drone usage in Ukraine to improve the coming Abrams and future Bradley replacement is vital.

There are more than 70 cases in which Tren de Aragua is mentioned in law enforcement documents or prosecutors’ complaints. Castro-Mata entered the country illegally last July, a member of Immigration and Customs Enforcement told CNN. The Venezuelan has tattoos associated with Tren de Aragua – which court documents for a suspected gang member in Georgia describe as five-pointed crowns, five-pointed stars and teardrops – the New York Police Department told CNN. A fellow police officer who refused to cooperate with the gang in his native Aragua state was shot 50 times, Boza says. It’s tempting to dismiss the European Parliament elections as the most important elections that don’t actually matter. Hundreds of millions of voters across 27 nations will turn out this weekend to cast their ballots, but the European Parliament is the least powerful of the European Union institutions. Its 720 members have limited powers, and, while a few are ascendant stars, a few are retired politicians, or even criminals. The Parliament that emerges from these elections, weak though it may be, will serve as a brake or accelerator for the crucial policies that will help shape Europe’s immediate future. In the five years since the last election, the bloc jointly bought Covid-19 vaccines and started a massive economic stimulus program to recover from the pandemic.

This was the same problem that partially brought Nazi Germany to its knees, wrote Hamish de Bretton-Gordon and James Holland in a commentary published on Wednesday by The Telegraph. They recalled how Nazi Germany had obsessed over the quality of its tanks, chiefly the King Tiger, but meanwhile only managed to produce less than 500 of them. AdvertisementIn total, Nazi Germany built just under 50,000 tanks during the war, while the US built over 100,000. The sheer numbers made a difference in World War II, and they'll make a difference now, de Bretton-Gordon and Holland wrote. Thomas received 103 gifts with a total value of more than $2.4 million between 2004 and 2023, the judicial reform group Fix the Court said in a report Thursday. Fix the Court's analysis found that Alito accepted 16 gifts worth a combined $170,095. Counting those gifts, Thomas' total two-decade haul is valued at nearly $4.2 million. The value and number of gifts Thomas received also eclipsed those accepted by eight retired or dead Supreme Court justices whose tenures overlapped his service on the court, which began in 1991. Antonin Scalia, a conservative justice who died in 2016 while on the court, accepted 67 gifts worth about $210,000 during his tenure, which began in 1986.

To the Editor:Re “Should Trump Be Sentenced to Prison? Two Opposing Views” (Opinion guest essay, June 3):The retired judge Nancy Gertner’s argument against imprisoning Donald Trump omits the simple reality that without prison time, Donald Trump faces no meaningful punishment. Mr. Trump plainly does not see the fact of having been convicted, standing by itself, as a shameful judgment on himself. And Mr. Trump is not a credible candidate for probation. No one can argue with a straight face that Mr. Trump sees any need to change his life, nor that criminal justice system supervision could bring him around.

One in five older Americans have no retirement savings, Social Security doesn't feel like much of a guarantee, and the pension era is over. While the widespread shift over the last five decades to 401(k)s for retirement savings has meant some Americans can't afford the burden of being primarily responsible for their retirement finances, others have been able to work the system to their advantage. Throughout his nearly 40-year-long career in geology, he was able to sock away over $2 million for his retirement, even after putting multiple kids through college. He thinks some just didn't know much about 401(k)s during the switch from a pension or didn't understand them. The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur

On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

The US has been "too passive" in the Red Sea, a retired US general told CBS' Face The Nation. The Houthis have been using drones and missiles to target commercial shipping in the Red Sea. AdvertisementA retired US general said the US has been too passive when it comes to the Houthis, letting them dominate the Red Sea, and said that it should go after their leaders instead. "We've been too passive," Kenneth F. McKenzie, who previously led the US Central Command, told CBS' Face The Nation on Sunday. "We've allowed the Houthis really to dominate the global maritime communications by closing down effectively the Suez Canal," he said.

I had a number in mind, but it wasn't my ageWhen I thought about retirement, I had a specific number in mind. Plus, I wanted to travel as long as I was physically able to and continue going to the theater regularly. Now, AI is changing the way everyone does business, and I'm not sure if I'm willing or able to climb the steep learning curve ahead. The final — and perhaps most compelling — reason for me to retire is so I can pursue my passions. I don't need to announce my retirement, throw myself a retirement party, or give myself a gold watch.

London CNN —A letter giving a rare insight into Franz Kafka’s struggle with writer’s block is going up for auction. This means it would have been written while Kafka was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis, with which he was diagnosed three years earlier. Ehrenstein made the request after seeing a newly published work by Kafka – probably the 1919 short story collection “Ein Landarzt” (“A Country Doctor”). Even though it was operational for only about a week, the pier helped deliver some 1,000 metric tons of aid into Gaza before breaking apart. That’s well short of the military’s goal of moving 500 tons of aid per day over the pier. The risks however were deemed too great at the time, with unpredictable winter weather and heavy fighting in Gaza. “We assumed a lot of risk in using a military operation for this purpose,” a second senior administration official added. Deputy Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh emphasized that the solution to aid to Gaza remains the land crossings.
